Ask astronaut Alexander anything 11 March 2014 German European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Alexander Gerst is all set for the 'Blue Dot' mission to the International Space Station in May. Crewmates NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman and commander-cosmonaut Maxim Surayev will hold a media conference on Tuesday 18 March 2014 and ESA is inviting you to ask questions via Twitter. Alexander is putting the finishing touches to his training before he heads to the Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan in May. There, he will enter quarantine with his crewmates to make sure they do not bring any harmful viruses or bacteria to the orbital outpost. The trip to space is surprisingly short: within around six hours the Expedition 40/41 crew will dock with the microgravity laboratory orbiting 400 kilometres above Earth at 28,800 kilometres per hour. Once aboard, the new crew will have a week to get acclimatised to living without the benefit of gravity before their heavy workload begins. During their six months in space they will assist in the docking and unloading of six visiting spacecraft that ferry supplies and experiments. Alexander is prime operator for Europe's Automated Transfer Vehicle, meaning he will monitor the arrival and take responsibility for distributing the 2600 kilograms of items in its cargo bay. Alexander's science roster includes using the Electromagnetic Levitator for the first time. This furnace can melt and solidify metal alloys without a container, allowing scientists to understand the finer properties of these metals. Astronauts return to Earth on Russian spacecraft 18 March 2010 NASA said that as members of the Expedition 21 and 22 crews, the two presided over the completion of the US segment of the space station. The Russian-US duo had been high above Earth for 169 days, blasting off into space on September 30, 2009 and docking with the ISS on October 2, according Russia's mission control. Firstly, the final integration and test of our Columbus virtual campus laboratory for the International Space Station began at The Erasmus Virtual Campus 6 Astrium GmbH in Bremen (D) following the arrival in Dieter Isakeit September of the Pre-Integrated Columbus Assembly (PICA) from Alenia Spazio in Turin (I). I believe that we have a payloads masterpiece of European engineering here, and I am ESA’s ISS External Payloads 8 delighted with the progress so far.We should be seeing some Steve Feltham & Giacinto Gianfiglio very real advance on Columbus by the end of 2002 and look forward to its status then. xeus Secondly, I had the opportunity on 15 January to review ISS Assembly of XEUS 10 the course of the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) project at Jens Schiemann Les Mureaux (F), together with our team and the industries involved in the project under prime contractor EADS-LV.The spoe progress is quite remarkable when we remember the SPOE 12 difficulties of last year. All in all, I think that the technical Rolf-Dieter Andresen, Maurizio Nati achievements so far are satisfactory. One important & Chris Taylor demonstration of this progress is the arrival of the ATV Structural Test Model in ESTEC’s Test Centre, where it will research undergo testing during the whole of this year. -

The Space Station goes round the entire Earth in just 1.5 hours. So the crew sees the Sun rise and set 16 times every day! The strangest thing, though, is weightlessness. “Up” and “down” mean nothing on the Space Station. Astronauts float wherever they want to go. Sometimes weightlessness makes them feel sick and dizzy. But when they get used to it, they find it is great fun – although it can also be a nuisance. If you leave something lying around on the Space Station, it will float away. So you have to be tidy! Eating is tricky. Astronauts eat food from plastic bags with a spoon, and drink from squeeze bottles with a straw. Alta Scuola Politecnica Every year, the Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP) selects 150 young and exceptionally talented students among the applicants to the Master programs in Architecture, Design and Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino. Students selected from within the two universities are chosen in the top 5-10% of their Bachelor of Science classes, with average mark above 28.5/30; about 90% of them achieve their BSc degree with an evaluation of 110/110 or more. International students, also selected among the top 5-10% of applicants, come from about 20 different countries. The resulting Community is made up of very motivated students with a passion for innovation; more than 1/3 of them are women. Alexandrov, Y. Kargopolov) and the American side (Don Puddy, through mid 1995, C. Brown, mid 1995-Present, and T. Capps). The objectives of the group were to determine the duties and responsibilities of cosmonauts and astronauts when completing flights on the Shuttle and Soyuz vehicles and the Mir station, the content of crew training in Russian and in the U.S., and to developing training schedules and programs. The group maintained a fairly standard work process. Periodic meetings were usually held alternating in Russia and in the U.S. Between meetings contact was maintained through the use of teleconferences and faxes. To widen the operational interaction on joint flight training issues, a Johnson Space Center (JSC) office (NASA) was created at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC) where an American representative permanently worked. This position, which was called the “Director of Operation, Russia” (DOR) was filled by a representative from the astronaut corps.
