NECTJ- Boston Sunday, March 12th, 2017 from 11:30am to 4:30pm on the Plaza of Copley Square in Boston We are having a benkyo-kai next Saturday, Feb. the 4th. We will dig into how to give "feedback" to students' speaking and writing. Aikawa-sensei will My name is Timothy Nagaoka, and I teach Japanese in the Boston Public Schools. With the support of the Japanese Consulate in Boston, the Fish Family Foundation, Boston's Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Japan Society of Boston, I am organizing an event called, "Cranes on the Square @ Copley Square" on Sunday, March 12th, 2017 on the Plaza of Copley Square in Boston. The event will commemorate the Sixth Anniversary of the Great Northeast Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that struck Japan on March 11th, 2011.NECTJ 勉強会 The goal of the event is to get the public involved in an activity that brings awareness to the tragedy that occurred in Japan four years ago and to remind them of the survivors who continue to rebuild from the wreckage. As one who lived through the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, I know how devastating a major disaster can be, and how easily the rest of the world moves on while the survivors are left to rebuild. The event will remind people of the disaster and the survivors who continue to rebuild in the Northeast region of Japan.1) How and what to give as feedback to students' oral and 2. • (Mostly) True Story of Helvetica and the New York City Subway the (MOSTLY) TRUE STORY of HELVETICA and the NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY
2/10/2015 AIGA | The (Mostly) True Story of Helvetica and the New York City Subway THE (MOSTLY) TRUE STORY OF HELVETICA AND THE NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY Article by Paul Shaw November 18, 2008 Filed Under: Inspiration, history, Voice, information design, graphic design, typography, signage, design educators, students There is a commonly held belief that Helvetica is the signage typeface of the New York City subway system, a belief reinforced by Helvetica, Gary Hustwit's popular 2007 documentary about the typeface. But it is not true—or rather, it is only somewhat true. Helvetica is the official typeface of the MTA today, but it was not the typeface specified by Unimark International when it created a new signage system at the end of the 1960s. Why was Helvetica not chosen originally? What was chosen in its place? Why is Helvetica used now, and when did the changeover occur? To answer those questions this essay explores several important histories: of the New York City subway system, transportation signage in the 1960s, Unimark International and, of course, Helvetica. These four strands are woven together, over nine pages, to tell a story that ultimately transcends the simple issue of Helvetica and the subway. The Labyrinth As any New Yorker—or visitor to the city—knows, the subway system is a labyrinth. This is because it is an amalgamation of three separate systems, two of which incorporated earlier urban railway lines. The current New York subway system was formed in 1940 when the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit), the BMT (BrooklynManhattan Transit) and the IND (Independent) lines were merged.

Urbahn Architects completes renovation of Morgan Avenue subway station, Brooklyn May 16, 2017 - Design / Build Morgan Avenue Station - Brooklyn, NY Brooklyn, NY The New York City architectural and planning firm of Urbahn Architects has completed the renovation of the historic Morgan Ave. subway station house for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Serving the L train line, the Morgan Ave. station house is located on the west side of Bogart St., at the intersection of Harrison Place, in the East Williamsburg section. MTA served as project manager as well as structural, civil, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineer for the upgrades. General contractor was Double M Construction. “The Morgan Ave. station provides crucial public transportation connection to an up-and-coming Brooklyn neighborhood. The project improved the station’s appearance, increased passenger comfort, and upgraded the building’s structural system,” said Urbahn principal Natale Barranco, AIA, LEED AP. “The renovation of the 2,400 s/f façade has brought the historic structure, originally built in 1928, to its former attractive architectural form.” Opened on July 14, 1928, as part of an extension of the BMT Canarsie line, the Morgan Ave. station serves the eastern section of the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood, an area that is increasingly popular with young professionals due it its diverse ethnic population, numerous restaurants and bars, availability of rental apartments, and very easy commute to Manhattan via the L train. Urbahn associate Nandini Sengupta, LEED AP, said, “The renovation included replacement of the entire 400 s/f brick and limestone façade, repairs to the roof, and installation of a new framed entrance with transom windows, exterior LED lighting, and exterior signage.” The project team installed a new façade that features brick set in a geometrical pattern and a limestone base and apron.

  • Final Scope of Work for an Environmental Impact Statement
RHEINGOLD DEVELOPMENT REZONING DRAFT FINAL SCOPE OF WORK FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT CEQR NO. 09DCP002K ULURP NOs. 110179ZRK, 080322ZMK, 070250MMK July 27, 2012 May 31, 2013 A. INTRODUCTION This scope of work outlines the technical areas to be analyzed in the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Rheingold Development Rezoning project. The New York City Department of City Planning (DCP), acting on behalf of the New York City Planning Commission (CPC), as lead agency for New York City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR), has determined that the project will require the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The Applicant, Forrest Lots, LLC, is requesting zoning map and text amendments, and amendments to the City Map (collectively, the “Proposed Action”) to facilitate residential and mixed‐use development on five full blocks and a portion of one block in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, Community District 4. The area affected by the Proposed Action comprises approximately 623,080 square feet (sf), and is bounded by Flushing Avenue on the north, Evergreen Avenue on the east, Melrose Avenue on the south, and Stanwix, Beaver, Garden Streets to the west (see Figure 1). Currently the area is zoned M1‐1 and M3‐1, which allow for high and low‐performance manufacturing uses, respectively. The Proposed Action would rezone the current M1‐1 and M3‐1 districts to R6A, R7A and M1‐2 districts, map C2‐4 commercial overlays, make the Inclusionary Housing Program (IH) zoning regulations applicable in the proposed R6A and R7A districts, and would map two streets that are currently unmapped.
