We are having a benkyo-kai next Saturday, Feb. the 4th. We will dig into how to give "feedback" to students' speaking and writing. Aikawa-sensei will My name is Timothy Nagaoka, and I teach Japanese in the Boston Public Schools. With the support of the Japanese Consulate in Boston, the Fish Family Foundation, Boston's Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Japan Society of Boston, I am organizing an event called, "Cranes on the Square @ Copley Square" on Sunday, March 12th, 2017 on the Plaza of Copley Square in Boston. The event will commemorate the Sixth Anniversary of the Great Northeast Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that struck Japan on March 11th, 2011.NECTJ 勉強会 The goal of the event is to get the public involved in an activity that brings awareness to the tragedy that occurred in Japan four years ago and to remind them of the survivors who continue to rebuild from the wreckage. As one who lived through the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, I know how devastating a major disaster can be, and how easily the rest of the world moves on while the survivors are left to rebuild. 4. NECTJ Professional Development 2016-2017 Project 2017on Mar 11 ~21, 2017 P6 The NECTJ Professional Development Workshop at United Nations Int'l School (24-50 7. Event schedule P8 プの中に位置付けました。理由は、インターナショナルバカロリア (IB) では継承語の プログラムが格上げされすべて OPI のスペリアレベルに移行しました。また、IB で は、SB (AP Japanese相当 ) が OPI のインターメディエイト (High まで含む ) ですし、9. Conferences P9 HB では OPI のアドバンスレベルとなりました。AP Japanese も数年後には IB の SB のように OPI レベルでは、Intermediate-High の位置に位置づけられる様子ですし、 10. Job P9 ニューヨーク市では、dual language も始まっています。また、大学でも内容重視に 焦点をし始める大学も出てきています。 11. New Membership これにより、今まで通りではなく、より継承語教育を含めた、日本語教育の新しい方2017 P10 向が必要に国語教育だけでなく、継承語教育者もいるわけで、両側からの接近が必 要です。そこでは、ナショナルスタンダードの見直しやクリティカルシンギングを 含めた高次思考方法が言語教育中でどのように展開されるのかは緊急課題です。そ の意味で、8月の4人の先生により発表はニューヨークにおける新しい日本語教育 の可能性の始まりであり、また、8月のワークショップはカリキュラムデベロップメ トと ITC 結びつきを一年続けられた先生や短期間で学習した先生らによる発表は、今 後の NECTJ にとっても重要な試金石になりました。また、ACTFL でも、われわれの 2 NECTJ の活動は非常に高く評価され、地域ぐるみの新しい可能性を、ニューヨークにおける実践から、読み取れる という評価をいただきました。まず、ブルクリンにおける JHL 教育の高揚とブロックスにおける新しい学校群での JFL の採用など、地域性に関わる課題が出てきています。JFL、JHL のかなり両側からの歩み寄りは挑戦的課題でし たが、ニューヨークとして提示できることに大いに期待しております。現実的には先の IB の先例にもみられるよう 世界的動きなのですし。アメリカの日本語教育界にとっても、重要な課題です。特に日本語教育がカテゴリー 4 や 5 の領域にありながらこのような地域ぐるみの挑戦できるのですから。 NECTJ Professional Development (PD) Workshop at UNIS (24-50 FDR Dr. NY, NY 10010) NECTJ スペシャル プロフェッショナル デベロップメント ワークショップは、この 9 月、10 月、11 月、 12 月、1 月、2 月、3 月(4−7も含む)の全ワークショップで60時間のPDが修得できます。それに付け加え、 このワークショップに出席すると、提携大学から 1 単位いただける可能性があります。また、国際交流基金からは P Dの場合には、援助されています。領収書及び PD 修了書の提出先の証明書が必要ですのでお忘れなくお願いし ます。 また、20 枚以上のレポートを提出すると 3 単位まで習得することができますし、それ以外の勉強会や大会 の出席で、単位を計上することができます。 詳しくはワークショップ中の説明セッションでお聞きください。もち ろん、大学の単位やPDの必要のない人もこのワークショップに参加されることは大歓迎です。このワークショッ プにつきましては、申し込み用紙は英文の部分をご利用ください。提携大学のでの単位修得は、Bachelor's Degree を既に取得されている方なら外部者でも、School of Professional Development を通し、日本語、または日本語の言 語学・教授法・2LA などで柔軟性のあるインデペンデント・スタディーコース (JPN447) に登録 (1-6 単位(SUNY, , Professor Sato のご指導のもと ))可能です。登録希望者には必要に応じ、NECTJ 勉強会がサポートシステム・リソースを提供し、各参加者が無理なく研究を行います。 This year NECTJ PD workshop will be new challenging program. Professor Saito Abott will give us prominent ideas at both August and November conferences. This program is designed partial aid for the NECTJ Professional Development workshop. This PD workshop on Oct , Nov, Dec , Jan , Feb and March that can provide participants with CEUs (ContinuingEducation Units), one credit and/or certificate of professional development 60 hours , which are authorized to be used towards receiving/maintaining their teacher’s licenses/credentials. This exchange program’s goal is to foster greater cultural connections between Japanese and United States students through the power of learning about a natural disaster and its effects upon a people and its country.

2. Purpose (1) Encourage Japanese high school students by providing the opportunity to come to the United States to speak with our students and share their experiences and feelings. (2) Provide students in the United States the opportunity to listen to the stories of the victims (their peers) and ask questions in order to gain greater insight into the natural disaster. (3) Motivate and promote the study of Japanese language and culture programs in high schools in the United States. (4) Develop networks between Japan and United States high school students who will then act as a bridge to connect Japan and the United States in the future. (5) Exchange their experiences and opinions US audiences including Japanese American and international people the opportunity to listen to the stories of the victims (their peers) and ask questions in order to gain greater insight into the natural disaster. 3. A, Teaching Culture in East Asian-Language Classes DATE: Saturday, March 11, 2017 TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Boston College High School (150 William T Morrissey Blvd, Boston, MA 02125) Language is more than grammar, syntax, and vocabulary—it’s also the gateway to culture. But how do you teach culture effectively and engagingly to students of different ages? This conference will showcase strategies for introducing students to Chinese and Japanese culture in their language-learning classrooms at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. We’ll discuss a variety of topics—including best practices for using literature, films, art, food, and music in the classroom—that can help students think more deeply about culture and other worldviews in ways that move beyond stereotypes and generalizations. This conference is open to all Chinese and Japanese-language teachers in grades K-12. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Because of generous funding from the Center for Global Partnership/Japan Foundation, this conference is free to Japanese language teachers. We hope you will join us!

Cofounded by several JET alums and Japanese individuals, KAC has connected nearly 5,000 high school students in Japan and the US through their 6-month (Sept – Feb) virtual cultural and language exchange program, Global Classmates. Using both languages, students exchange messages, photos and videos on a secure and monitored Facebook-like platform.

C. Japanese Teacher Maloney Magnet School

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

8 The Japanese language teacher at Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School will teach Japanese language and culture to multiple grade levels PreK-5 using the target language 95-100% of instructional time. This person is responsible for collaborating with Japanese teacher colleagues, creating lesson plans and materials, and using technologies to enhance instruction. Duties include but are not limited to writing student progress reports, holding various special events, encouraging parent involvement and promoting the Japanese language program both within and beyond the school.

SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Teach 7-10 classes of Japanese language per day in multiple grades Prek-5. Classes range from 20-40 minutes in length.

2. Create lessons that are engaging, culturally-relevant and related to regular classroom content, following the established Japanese

Language and Culture Curriculum and keeping with the national Standards for Foreign Language Learning and the CT World Languages

Framework.

3. Assess and report on progress for 250+ students per year. Administer yearly extended oral/written assessments for second/fifth graders.

4. Organize various parent-involvement events and other international events such as pen pal projects, native speaker visits, International

Education Conference, etc.

5. Use a set of iPod Nanos, student laptops, interactive whiteboard, iPads, and any other newly available technology to enhance language instruction.

6. Correspond with parents and students via the Japanese program website, brochures, email, letters, and other teacher-created materials.

7. Participate in school-wide events, faculty meetings, committees, etc.

8. Perform all required duties of an elementary school teacher as described in the WTA Contract.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Japanese Language or closely related field.

2. *Connecticut Certification to teach Japanese language in the elementary school (024/101) or CT elementary school certification, or ability to qualify for a Durational Shortage Area Permit for Japanese language.

3. Experience teaching Japanese language and/or working with elementary school-level children preferred.

4. Knowledge of PowerPoint, iTunes, Web 2.0 resources, and website maintenance preferred. Familiarity with interactive white board use also preferred.

SALARY/BENEFITS/WORK YEAR

According to WTA Contract, salary commensurate with experience.

YMCA Long Island City – 32-23 Queens Blvd. Train 7, E, R.

After-school 2:50-6 p.m. following the Public School schedule (Early September – June, with breaks in December, February, April)

Teacher should have own materials to teach Hiragana, Japanese culture, and Japanese spoken language. Assistant teacher (English speaking) will assist daily.

Children are 4-5 years old who understand some Japanese already.
