This year NECTJ PD workshop will be new challenging program. The Japan Foundation also supports us. AP Japanese and IB Japanese change their new curriculum that are based on more content based instruction. Our students including heritage learners must study complicated content like global issues using more higher thinking and critical thinking. Professor Saito Abott will give us prominent ideas at both August and November conferences. This program is designed partial aid for the NECTJ Professional Development workshop. This PD workshop on Oct , Nov, Dec , Jan , Feb and March that can provide participants with CEUs (ContinuingEducation Units), one credit and/or certificate of professional development 60 hours , which are authorized to be used towards receiving/maintaining their teacher’s licenses/credentials. For PD we will get the certificate of 60 hours PD for this NECTJ Professional Development. The Japan Foundation will provide aid for this program. . For CEU we will get one CEU Credit (approximately $270 for one credit for SUNY Prof Sato). NECTJ Kizuna Program for U.S. School 1. Overview The Student Exchange Committee of the Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese will invite the high school students from Northeast area who lost family and friends during the Great East Earthquake on March 11, 2011 to the United States. We invited 10 students form Northeast area and our students learned a lot of information from their experience and they also learned a lot exiting matters. This exchange program’s goal is to foster greater cultural connections between Japanese and United States students through the power of learning about a natural disaster and its effects upon a people and its country. The program was supported by the Japanese American Association, Japan Tourist Bureau, Alliance of Japanese collage alumni and Northeast Council of Japanese Teachers.

1 各日本語教育現場の現状

Brookline High School began offering Japanese in 1999. We have grown the program since then to have students in Level 1, 2/2Honor, 3/3 Honor, and 4/4 Honor/ 4AP. We currently have our highest enrollment to date, with 120 students studying Japanese. Over the years, we have had one full time teacher and one part-time teacher. The enrollment for the program has varied as well, making it hard to remain relevant in a large high school of over 2000 students with a lot of programming available for students. Other language options at BHS include Spanish, French,

Latin and Chinese.

2 今後の課題

We have traveled to Japan six times since 2002; our previous sister school was Nagano High

School in Kawachinagano, Osaka-fu. Our current sister school is Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High

School in Kyoto. We also participated in the 2012 Kizuna program, which sparked renewal and growth in our program. We also host students from our sister schools and have both short-term and long-term visits from students from Japan. Some of these visits at our school are for one day, others last 2 weeks, and we sometimes have international students stay for one year. I am responsible to raise all of the money necessary for student scholarships to travel to Japan, which can range from $4000 to $13,000.

We often write grants to the PTO to get funding for workshops for our students, such as learning calligraphy with an artist, making bento with a Japanese chef, or drumming taiko. We also participate in Japan Day each year at the MFA and have participated in Japan Bowl in years past when it was in Boston. We have regular classroom visits with Showa Boston students.

In order to increase enrollment, we do a lot of public events to increase the visibility of the program. Our biggest event is the Brookline Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring of each year.

We started this event with a gift of sakura trees from the Consul General of Japan in 2012 and our festival has grown into the 2nd largest arts event in Brookline with over 1500 people in attendance over the past two years. It is a successful fundraiser for our Japan Exchange

Program Scholarship Fund. The festival is a combination of taiko drumming, Japanese song, dance, games, crafts, and food from local restaurants.

3 領事館への要望 It would be great if the Consul General could help facilitate cultural programs or assist financially for students attending events (guest speakers, musicians, etc.) There many events in Boston area but they need to be more welcoming to high school students who are not native speakers

(there are issues about transportation, cost of admission, etc.). We would also appreciate timely communication about upcoming events, especially festivals.

It would be great if the Consul General could commit to annual attendance at the Brookline

Cherry Blossom Festival and give financial support for the event. The event costs about $5000 to put on and we hope each year to break even. Sponsors are very helpful to make that happen.

We would also appreciate any help with advertising the event. We need to better coordinate with the Boston Japan Festival to share dates early to avoid overlap, share vendors, etc.

For our exchange Program, when we are in Tokyo, it would be great to meet with government officials or visit the to American Consulate in Tokyo. Any help coordinating those visits would be appreciated.

Japanese Dual Language Teacher Position Available- September 2017

PS 147 in Brooklyn will be expanding our Japanese Dual Language program to Second Grade in September 2017. We are looking for an exceptional Japanese Bilingual Teacher to fill the position for K-2. Our school is located on 325 Bushwick Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11206, just a couple of blocks from L train Montrose Avenue station and Morgan Avenue station. In September 2017 - 2018, the Japanese Dual

Language Program will have three classes. One Kindergarten class, one First Grade Class and one Second Grade Class.

Japanese speaking children and English speaking children or speakers of other languages will make up each class of 24 students. PS 147 is seeking to hire a teacher with:

● New York State certified in elementary education or being the process of obtain one

● and/ or possess a bilingual extension or be in the process of obtaining a bilingual extension

● Fluent in Japanese
