On our way we see the Fontaine St Michel, the Sorbonne, Hotel Cluny where we will switch into Romain times. We can see the ruins of Romain baths. Further we discover the former city wall of Paris from the 12th century. We will stop from time to time to taste some of the delicious French specialties, hmm c’est bon! Day 2 Paris Arc de Triomph and Christo 26 km Triumphant architecture accompanies today`s bike journey. First, we will cycle to Dôme des Invalides with Napoleons tomb, the most famous French person. Continuation of the journey, past the Ecole Militaire, to the Eiffel Tower and to Trocadero to take some pictures. Now it is not far to the Arc de Triomph and its cover by Christo. In 1961, three years after their meeting in Paris, Christo and Jeanne-Claude began creating works of art in public space. One of their projects was to cover up a public building. Christo, who rented a small room near the Arc de Triomphe, was studying several projects at that time. This included a photo montage of the Arc de Triomphe seen from Avenue Foch. In the 1970s and 1980s, Christo created some additional studies. • Faces of Paris
eric hazan FACES OF PARIS ow has Paris changed over the past decade? To answer that, one would ideally need to have returned to the city after a long absence; I have only been away for short peri- ods over the last ten years, and so I see its progress as one Hdoes the wrinkles on a beloved face that one observes every day. The inner city is now changing only slowly. Time is needed for a quarter of Kabyl cafés to be transformed into fashionable bars, for the Chinese rag trade to advance a street or two, or for what is called renovation to press the poor a notch more towards the Périphérique.1 The physical transformations of Paris may be read as a ceaseless strug- gle between the spirit of place and the spirit of time. Take, for example, the nameless spot formed by the widening of Rue Mouffetard below the church of Saint-Médard, in the Faubourg Saint-Marceau on the eastern edge of the 5th arrondissement. The ancient food shops, the market stalls, the immense trees that cast their shade onto the porch of the church, the remains of the little cemetery where the ‘convulsionaries’ danced on the tomb of a popular priest in the reign of Louis XV,2 the two large cafés facing each other across the road—this whole panoply of eras, styles and events gives this place a spirit that cannot be compared with any other. Older Parisians are aware that under their feet flows the River Bièvre in its descent towards the Jardin des Plantes, and that this district was crossed by the main road towards Italy.

Here, we tell you all you need to know… By Caroline Harrap PARIS With high ceilings, wrought- iron balconies and elegant aris is always a good idea, or so said Audrey façades, Haussmannian Hepburn anyway. Well, it looks like she wasn’t apartments are among the alone in her view, if the property figures for the last city’s most desirable year are anything to go by. According to the latest Preport from the Notaires de France, the legal specialists who preside over property transactions in the country, there were record volumes of sales as well as price rises across many cities, but Paris was one of the key hotspots. In fact, year on year, the figures show a price rise of 5.5 per cent for apartments in the city, with the average cost now an eye-watering €8,450 per square metre, and no sign of this trend abating. So, what are the reasons for this? Well, aside from the enduring allure of the French capital, it seems the stars have aligned to make this a very good moment for the Paris property market. First, there’s what is being called the ‘Macron effect’, with the young president putting the revival of the economy at the heart of his plans, thereby creating new confidence in the market.
