We found 46 of the 358 described cycad species had at least one element reported to date. The only genus that was missing from the data was Microcycas. Many of the species reports contained concentrations of one to several macronutrients and no other elements. The cycad leaves contained greater nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations than the reported means for plants throughout the world. Magnesium was identified as the macronutrient that has been least studied. -

University of Cape Town CRIME, CULTURE AND COLLECTING: THE ILLICIT CYCAD MARKET IN SOUTH AFRICA Abstract It is widely accepted that illicit markets are driven by specific contextual factors that determine their nature and scope. Two points in particular have not been explored in the literature on wildlife crime. First, while illicit markets around commodities such as drugs and weapons are fuelled by consumers arguably in need of, or addicted to, the product, the desires of buyers that shape wildlife markets are often shaped by cultural norms which may seem irrational to outsiders. Second, given that wildlife markets are seldom as stringently regulated as those in respect of drugs, weapons or other commodities, the nature of the criminal enterprises that source, move and sell the products are possibly very different. The study examines these two factors – the culture of markets and the degree of criminal enterprise or organisation within them – through a case study of a largely unexamined environmental crime market in South Africa, that of rare cycad plants. -

Handout 2 Natural Heritage Criteria and the Attributes of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area The notes that follow were derived by deconstructing the original 1988 nomination document to identify the specific themes and attributes which have been recognised as contributing to the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wet Tropics. The notes also provide brief statements of justification for the specific examples provided in the nomination documentation. Steve Goosem, December 2012 Natural Heritage Criteria: (1) Outstanding examples representing the major stages in the earth’s evolutionary history Values: refers to the surviving taxa that are representative of eight ‘stages’ in the evolutionary history of the earth. Relict species and lineages are the elements of this World Heritage value. Attribute of OUV (a) The Age of the Pteridophytes Significance One of the most significant evolutionary events on this planet was the adaptation in the Palaeozoic Era of plants to life on the land. The earliest known (plant) forms were from the Silurian Period more than 400 million years ago. These were spore-producing plants which reached their greatest development 100 million years later during the Carboniferous Period. This stage of the earth’s evolutionary history, involving the proliferation of club mosses (lycopods) and ferns is commonly described as the Age of the Pteridophytes. The range of primitive relict genera representative of the major and most ancient evolutionary groups of pteridophytes occurring in the Wet Tropics is equalled only in the more extensive New Guinea rainforests that were once continuous with those of the listed area. -

It is endemic to West Java, Indonesia, specifically around Mount Gede, Mount Pangaro and south of Sukabumi. The Bleeding Toad’s scientific name, cruentata, is from the Latin word meaning “bleeding” because of the frog’s overall reddish-purple appearance and blood-red and yellow marbling on its back. Geographical range The population declined drastically after the eruption of Mount Galunggung in 1987. It is Knowledge believed that other declining factors may be habitat alteration, loss, and fragmentation. Experts Although the lethal chytrid fungus, responsible for devastating declines (and possible Get Involved extinctions) in amphibian populations globally, has not been recorded in this area, the sudden decline in a creekside population is reminiscent of declines in similar amphibian species due to the presence of this pathogen. Only one individual Bleeding Toad was sighted from 1990 to 2003. Part of the range of Bleeding Toad is located in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park. Future conservation actions should include population surveys and possible captive breeding plans. Randall …:Lepidozamia 属(ザミア科,ソテッ目) 2 種における染色体数及び核型の比較研究 Lepidozamia Lepidozamia (Zamiaceae, Cycadales; Stevenson 1992) is endemic to Australia, and consists of L. hopei hopei Regel and L. peroffskyana Regel. Two species of Lepidozamia are enable to be recognized with the the width of leaflet; i. e. the former has wider leaflet than the latter (Jones 1993). The chromosome number and karyotype of L. hopei and L. peroffskyana was previously reported by Marchant (1968) and Moretti (1990) . In certain cycad-taxa, however, there are some mistakes of their their karyotype identification for the previous reports, and it is necessary to reinvestigate their of the chromosomal characters (Kokubugata et al. 1999). The aim of the present study is investigation of the chromosome number and karyotype of L. hopei and L. peroffskyana by the standard aceto-orcein staining staining method for the cytotaxonomical accumulations of Lepidozamia. Materials Materials and Methods The taxonomical treatment follows Jones (1993). The plants investigated in the present study were collected in the each habit and exported under a CITES permit before cultivation in the green- house house of the Tsukuba Botanical Garden (Table 1). Root tips were harvested and pretreated in 4 mM 8-hydroxyquinoline at 4℃ for 10 hour. They were fixed in acetic ethanol (3:1) at 4℃ for 24 hour, and were transferred and stored in 70 % ethanol at at -20 ℃ Fixed Fixed Root tips were macerated in a mixture of IN HCI and 45 % acetic acid (2:1) at 60 ℃ for 10 10 sec., put on glass slides, and then stained in 2 % aceto-orcein at room temperature for 4 hour. -
