Signed, Marcus Leadley © 2015 2 Abstract This enquiry represents an exploration of environmental sound and artistic practice from the perspectives of in situ listening and transphonia. The initial term, in situ listening, has been coined by the author in order to constellate a group of intellectual trajectories and artists’ practices that engage with recorded sound and share a common theme: that the listening context, the relationship between mediated sound and site, is an integral part of the engagement process. Heikki Uimonen (2005, p.63) defines transphonia as the, “mechanical, electroacoustical or digital recording, reproduction and relocating of sounds.” The term applies to sound that is relocated from one location to another, or sound that is recorded at a site and then mixed with the sound of the prevailing environment. The experience of the latter, which is a key concern for this thesis, may be encountered during the field recording process when one ‘listens back’ to recordings while on site or during the presentation of site-specific sound art work. Twelve sound installations, each based on field recordings, were produced in order to progress the investigation. Installations were created using a personally devised approach that was rigorous, informed, and iterative. -

Greetings and thank you for staying in touch with friends and fellow alumni at the University of Northern Iowa. We are looking forward to a year filled with new challenges and opportunities. While our state appropriations have been reduced to levels of 11 years ago, the UNI community's resourcefulness in identifying revenue and cost-containment strategies and the availability of stimulus funds will allow for the most strategic response possible. Moving forward with strong alumni support, sound priorities and excellent faculty and staff, prospects are great that UNI will continue to have a powerful impact on the success of our students and the well being of Iowa. Initiatives for sustainability and diversity complement our priorities, which are to build an even stronger undergraduate program, to lead the state in pre-K through 12 education issues, and to increase assistance to the state in economic, social and cultural development. -

Her friend Luc Sante recently writing about Acker: "She first distributed her work on the mail-art circuit, pamphlets that she typed, Xeroxed, and sent out serially to a hundred people or so". Published in traditional format, this work became her first regular publication, in 1975. One of the key figures of the art punk 70's, much of her writing involves appropriation of work ranging from the classics to porn, and inserting herself and her life into the collage. Anderson’s permanent sound installation Continuous Drift (2015) explores new ways of integrating sound in the public realm, situating works from 33 artists in an active city square. His public artworks The Manual for Acoustic Planning and Urban Sound Design (2013) and The Office for Common Sound (2016) probe the potential of the artist as urban planner and municipal resource. Recent exhibitions include A Visibility Matrix (Void, Derry, 2019; Secession, Austria, 2019; Le Printemps de Septembre, Toulouse, 2018; The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, 2018) and Field Recording (Rua Red, Tallaght, 2018). Anderson’s proposal for the UK Holocaust Memorial International Design Competition with Heneghan Peng Architects received honourable mention (2018). He convenes the course Vibrant Forms: Reconsidering the Built Environment Through Sound at NCAD and is currently co-curating Ireland’s pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021. The EDITORIAL outlines Sedimenta’s mission statement and theoretical foundation, specifically for edition 0 and 1. The SUSTAINABILITY PLAN speculates the future of the magazine along a ten-year timeline. The ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN is a review of all other magazines, journals, and digital projects similar to Sedimenta in either theme or content. In the scan, I include a brief description of the people, the project, the form, the code, and website traffic statistics and audience information with Alexa competitive analytics software. EDITORIAL Sedimenta is an independent, semiannual journal and publishing platform based in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Unfolding through dispatches and collaborations, the ongoing project de-stratifies traditional disciplinary boundaries through conversations, essays, reviews, and, in the future, online exhibitions, artist talks, and more. Yhdeksän vuoden aikana olemme esitelleet taiteilijoita eri puolilta maailmaa teoksilla, jotka haastavat, viihdyttävät ja ennen kaikkea kehottavat meitä pohtimaan jokapäiväistä ympäristöämme. Tämä vuosi ei ole poikkeus, sillä festivaalin teosvalikoima on tänäkin vuonna ainutlaatuinen sekä aidosti kansainvälinen.
