Keighran VC Presents Victoria Cross to Memorial

Keighran VC unveils Victoria Cross in Memorial’s Hall of Valour Australia’s latest Victoria Cross recipient, Corporal Daniel Keighran VC, today unveiled a display of his Victoria Cross in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Valour. Corporal Keighran’s Victoria Cross, on loan to the Memorial, is displayed with his accompanying medal group in the exhibition honouring all the Australians who have received the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in time of war. The Hall of Valour recognises the deeds of ordinary Australians under the extraordinary conditions of war. The Memorial’s Director, Dr Brendan Nelson, believes that Corporal Keighran exemplifies every quality this nation admires. “What he did in the action for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross was not only that of a courageous professional Australian soldier in the heat of intense combat, but it was an act of calculated selflessness for the safety of others - his mates. He is an inspiration to our nation, now and for all time. The Australian War Memorial is immensely proud in being able to exhibit his VC to allow his story to be shared and understood by all Australians”, said Dr Nelson. Corporal Keighran is only the third recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia, which in 1991 replaced the British or Imperial Victoria Cross. Corporal Keighran’s Victoria Cross is the 69th to be on display at the Memorial; including all three Victoria Crosses for Australia as well as three British medals. “It’s a very proud moment to be back at the Australian War Memorial to unveil my VC medal display,” Corporal Keighran said. “The Memorial has an extraordinary collection of Australian military history and I am very pleased that my medal is now here on display. It is also great to be joined by some Australian school students today, who have been teaching me about some of the things they have learnt during their previous visits to the Memorial.” Corporal Daniel Alan Keighran was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia following his heroic actions at Derapet, Uruzgan province, Afghanistan, on 24 August 2010. His citation reads in part: “[Corporal Keighran’s] acts of exceptional courage in circumstances of great peril were instrumental in permitting the withdrawal of the combined Australian and Afghan patrol with no further casualties. His valour is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Australian Army and the Australian Defence Force.” Corporal Keighran’s medal group comprises of The Victoria Cross for Australia Australian Active Service Medal with Clasp Iraq and Clasp ICAT Afghanistan Campaign Medal Iraq Campaign Medal Australian Service Medal with Clasp East Timor Australian Defence Medal United Nations Mission in Support of East Timor Medal NATO Medal with Clasp ISAF He also recently received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. This has been presented to the living Australian Victoria Cross, George Cross and Cross of Valour recipients as a personal gift of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Corporal Keighran is also entitled to the Meritorious Unit Citation for 1-MTF and the Infantry Combat Badge which are not on display with the medal group. The initiative involved putting on a game of Rugby involving our local Rugby Squad and playing in specially designed jerseys depicting the ANZAC spirit and the day was called ‘Digger Day’. On completion of the game the jerseys are auctioned off to the public. The successful collaboration between the Nowra RSL sub-branch and the Shoalhaven Rugby club has proved to be a big hit within the tight Shoalhaven community. This event has attracted around 1500-2000 people to each Digger Day event, which equates to around a large step up in number, compared to normal club matches. The concept was a huge success raising in excess of $10,000 for each year. On each occasion we have had the support of my close and personal friend, Keith Payne VC who has attended as guest to all our Digger Days. On each occasion the Navy flew Keith by Naval Helicopter into the ground with the game ball and the Army’s Red Beret Parachute Display team also performs. As we approached the ANZAC Centenary we had plans to escalate the event and put on a Digger Day which would be momentous and spectacular for our small community for 2015.

The term break in April saw me take the opportunity to visit Bond University as a Principal in Residence. The schedule for that visit was made available at the previous Council meeting. I will report on this experience toward the end of the year when it is concluded. I also took the opportunity to attend the IBSC Australian and New Zealand Regional Conference at Churchie in Brisbane. The programme for this is attached. It was fortuitous that the theme of the Conference allowed our new Service in Action Director Mr Mark Tait to be imbedded in focussed thinking at the very beginning of his tenure with regard to where service is in Schools of our type in the region. Council will find attached to this two articles apposite to the visit of Dr Yong Zhao to the School in April. Also a very pertinent article on independent education from the editor of AHISA Independence. Council will find included in their packages a copy of Creative Schools - Revolutionizing Education from the Ground Up by Ken Robinson and Lou Aronica. During my time as Headmaster I have used books as both provocation and thanks for staff within the School.

Media Release VC and GC recipients come together to support Australia’s wounded Australian War Memorial, Canberra, 17 April 2013: Australia’s four living Victoria Cross recipients and sole George Cross recipient came together today for the first time in history, to launch a series of limited edition medallions in support of Soldier On and Australia’s wounded military personnel. Officially launched by the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison AO, ‘In the Service of Others’ , a series of five medallions and a medallion set, features the images of Warrant Officer Class II Keith Payne VC, Constable Michael Pratt GC, Corporal (then Trooper) Mark Donaldson VC, Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith VC MG and Corporal Daniel Keighran VC. Struck with the support of the recipients, the medallions come with a replica Victoria Cross or George Cross. Only 1,000 of each medallion and 1,000 medallion sets will be released, with all profits from their sale being donated to Soldier On. Victoria Cross for Australia recipient and Soldier On Patron-In-Chief, Corporal Mark Donaldson VC said he hopes the medallions will inspire others to acknowledge the sacrifices of those wounded while in the service of the nation. “Australians are becoming increasingly aware of the impact and sacrifices of our military personnel,” Corporal Donaldson said. “It is clear the public wants to help and these medallions are a way for them to support our wounded. “I was proud last year to come on board with Soldier On and to be helping them enhance, inspire and empower the lives of physically and mentally wounded servicemen and women.
