    The Politics of Roman Memory in the Age of Justinian DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Marion Woodrow Kruse, III Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Anthony Kaldellis, Advisor; Benjamin Acosta-Hughes; Nathan Rosenstein Copyright by Marion Woodrow Kruse, III 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the use of Roman historical memory from the late fifth century through the middle of the sixth century AD. The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century.

Point Oktoberfest, a Marzen-style lager, won the gold medal in the American-style Amber Lager category (45 entries), while Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale, a unique and extra bold spiced ale, was judged the best in the Field Beer or Pumpkin Beer category (63 entries). “A gold medal from the Great American Beer Festival represents true brewing excellence, and to win gold medals for both our fall seasonal beers is doubly exciting for our brewery,” said Stevens Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins.     Welcome from the President ELCOME TO THE 29TH ANNUAL Great Taste of the Midwest. At a time when we probably should be over- whelmed by the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, we are too busy trying to figure Wout how to make this event a better experience for all. To that end, we are excited that we have maintained the same foot- print as we’ve had in past years, but have added more brewer space, by moving our merch tents and adding a few new tents to a previously restricted staff only area of the park (inside the “loop road”). This allows us bring in some new brewers while continuing to bring back the brewers that you come to expect to see at the Great Taste of the Midwest. I would like to thank Great Taste Chairman, Mark Garthwaite and the multitude of volunteers that make this event happen. We are all very proud that this is the only event of this size that is run by a 100% volunteer effort. Their passion for beer is a large part of what makes a volunteer effort of this size a success. I would also like to thank all of the Brewers that come to the Great Taste of the Midwest. All of “our” passion for beer flows from their passion. As the event has grown and produced more return Brewers each year, we’ve come to think of the Brewers as family coming home every year on the second Saturday in August. Sadly, I have to acknowledge the passing of several MHTG members since the last Great Taste.

    Modelling Radiation Exposure and Radionuclide Transfer for Non-human Species Report of the Biota Working Group of EMRAS Theme 3 Environmental Modelling for RAdiation Safety (EMRAS) Programme FOREWORD Environmental assessment models are used for evaluating the radiological impact of actual and potential releases of radionuclides to the environment. They are essential tools for use in the regulatory control of routine discharges to the environment and also in planning measures to be taken in the event of accidental releases; they are also used for predicting the impact of releases which may occur far into the future, for example, from underground radioactive waste repositories. It is important to check, to the extent possible, the reliability of the predictions of such models by comparison with measured values in the environment or by comparing with the predictions of other models. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been organizing programmes of international model testing since the 1980s. The programmes have contributed to a general improvement in models, in transfer data and in the capabilities of modellers in Member States. The documents published by the IAEA on this subject in the last two decades demonstrate the comprehensive nature of the programmes and record the associated advances which have been made. From 2003 to 2007, the IAEA organised a programme titled “Environmental Modelling for RAdiation Safety” (EMRAS). The programme comprised three themes: Theme 1: Radioactive Release Assessment ⎯ Working Group 1: Revision of IAEA Technical Report Series No. 364 “Handbook of parameter values for the prediction of radionuclide transfer in temperate environments (TRS-364) working group; ⎯ Working Group 2: Modelling of tritium and carbon-14 transfer to biota and man working group; ⎯ Working Group 3: the Chernobyl I-131 release: model validation and assessment of the countermeasure effectiveness working group; ⎯ Working Group 4: Model validation for radionuclide transport in the aquatic system “Watershed-River” and in estuaries working group.

(April 17, 2012) ± Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat Ale has become so popular the Stevens Point Brewery has boosted production ± again. The unfiltered ale is the Stevens Point Brewery¶s largest selling seasonal beer and is expected to pour on the sales again this summer, according to Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner Joe Martino. ³To get ready for summer, we are taking advantage of our brewery¶s increased production capacity to brew 50 percent more Nude Beach Summer Wheat than we did last year,´ he said. ³This is not the first time we¶ve increased production to keep up with demand. We are as excited as our customers are for the arrival of summer and the return of Nude Beach Summer Wheat Ale.´ Since 2009 the Stevens Point Brewery has invested approximately $3 million in new equipment and additional warehouse space to increase capacity and improve brewing efficiency. The latest expansion now being completed adds nine new fermentation/aging tanks, two bright beer tanks - more - Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat Page 2 and other equipment, increasing brewing capacity to more than 120,000 barrels per year. ³Our increased capacity gives us the flexibility to increase production of a particular brand, when necessary, and it is again necessary for Nude Beach Summer Wheat,´ Martino said.     THE SOUTHEAST BLOCK The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Bethel Heights estate vineyard that consistently gives us wines of distinctive character. It was planted in 1979 on a south-facing slope between 420 and 520 feet elevation. The red clay soil is volcanic in origin, three feet deep and well drained. The vines are 100% Pommard clone, planted on their own roots in Oregon's pre- phylloxera days. At 30 years old the vines are still healthy and apparently phylloxera-free. The crop is held close to two tons per acre for optimum quality. THE 2007 VINTAGE was a classic cool Oregon vintage, similar to 2005 (and 1999 and 2001) and 2007 PINOT NOIR ® SOUTHEAST BLOCK very different from 2006, our hottest vintage on record.
