At the time, the record was recognized for its bold departure from the group’s sonic Larry Brown traditions; in the years since, it’s been continuously celebrated, with tracks like “To Build A 7. A Promise featuring Heidi Vogel Home (feat. Patrick Watson)” reaching huge audiences, spilling out of televisions, cinemas and radios long after its release. They didn’t really disappear – the group toured the world a couple times over, selling out iconic venues like the and Sydney Opera House, released a live album, and were called on to score films and mix compilations and WIG456 CATALOG NUMBER programme events. March 15th, 2019 RELEASE DATE The release of their fourth studio album, To Believe, in March 2019, is the next step in a process of constant evolution. Born out of the band’s latest formation, it’s a creative FILE UNDER Alternative “C” partnership between founder Jason Swinscoe and longtime friend and collaborator Dom Smith, along with an extended family of regular bandmates and collaborators. Guided by a FORMATS CD communal spirit, the changing members are consistent with their ethos, where no individual UPC: 887828045624 ego takes precedence. Guest vocalists on To Believe include the art-soul singer Moses Sumney, legendary UK rapper Roots Manuva, longtime vocal collaborator Heidi Vogel and many more.

To Believe is the product of a long period of gestation, a reflection of the kind of album they wanted to make – the kind of album, that is, they’ve always made: deep, textured, and layered Double LP (180 Gram) w/ DOWNLOAD with meaning. With artwork by The Designers Republic™ () and mixed by 15 time Grammy Winner Tom Elmhirst, at the legendary Electric Lady studio built by Jimi UPC: 887828045617 Hendrix, it’s a masterful return that stands as their most definitive statement as a group.

Surveying the musical landscape of 2019, it’s easy to forget how The Cinematic Orchestra Vinyl is non-returnable have helped to shape it. They’ve long bridged deep-thinking , a soundtrack sensibility and into new shapes, starting with their 1999 debut, Motion. They’ve forged a path for acts like Floating Points, Kamasi Washington, Ólafur Arnalds and BADBADNOTGOOD, artists who blur different disciplines together to carve out their own new niches.

In this sense, the band’s recorded absence is less a break than an embrace of its unique relationship with space, with kinship, with dissent, of course with art and sound, but most of all, with one another.

OVERVIEW

Dave Portner, aka of , has returned, following up 2017’s release of Eucalyptus with a gorgeous and layered new record titled Cows On Hourglass Pond. Cows On Hourglass Pond was recorded between January - March 2018 by Dave Portner at Laughing Gas Studio in Asheville, NC on a Tascam 48 half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine. The album was mixed by Adam McDaniel and Dave Portner at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, NC. The album takes inspiration from the future and the past in equal measure, referencing a myriad of cultural touchstones and influences - , robots, Waylon Jennings, Morricone soundtracks, and much more.

Avey Tare has written the attached note to accompany the listeners’ experience of the record. --- 1996. That was the year we bought the 8 track. A Tascam 48 half inch tape reel to reel with two dbx noise reducers and a fat grey remote made of thick plastic and metal. That’s how I learned to record with Brian Weitz. The machine, he, and I, taking smoke breaks outside of my bedroom. Tape heads soaked in drying alcohol. It all becomes one memory; recording, hanging out, driving around. The machine speaks a language and we observed and learned to speak it pretty well. There were many lawns to speak about. We’d have long conversations about the stretches of grass and daffodils. Other machines in the future watching every move. Back then there were large clusters of woods cut in sectors by black roads. There AVEY TARE were two ways to leave the driveway. A person could stand at one of the entrances and call out to the other. She sees and beckons and the other runs in the snow along a neat row of trees to the other side. COWS ON There are many entrances to music, this is just one. Speakers of a car spit flurries of warm road dust. The scene is a half melted snowy canyon. Fences of large farms stacked in sevens are spaced seven lengths apart. Seven shadows laid across cold rock HOURGLASS and grass. Someone is asleep in the back seat. Sun lighting them up. Black lines of fences on bright clay based vistas. We stopped every now and then gazing at impressive canyon crevice drop off. Eyes seeing reds and sun-dyed pinks and orange in clouds above other canyon pinnacles. Snow patches in POND the hills till you can’t see with eyes. The car moves forward farther than the eyes can see. Life is being left even faster. There are cows everywhere, like Lancaster. Cows way out in the distance far from the road. Patches of black and white blur on white carpet, coloring or blotting dreams formed under mossy roofs Tracklisting and spinning out chimneys across the earth. There are cows closer to the roads and in the cold streams. 1. What’s The Goodside? Brown crowds under the trees walking slow in the scene. We follow or leave them behind. America blinks and cows appear. They stand stunned. Disappearing little black eyes in the mirror. Brown coats and 2. Eyes on Eyes horns. It’s an intimate scene in the car. You’re behind the wheel. The Driver and the Navigator and the 3. Nostalgia in Lemonade Music. The music moves out in the way it did years ago. Like when we sat on porches and at fires and on 4. Saturdays (Again) hilltops and climbed the pyramids. Way before I was born. A singular voice singing out at something way out there. Could have been the stars, could have been other people. Unnameable things. A voice made 5. Chilly Blue of many. The music is speaking about the movement of things and about you moving with them. The 6. K.C. Yours Driver bobs their head. The Navigator leans in to get deeper into the sounds of things. The sounds of 7. Our Little Chapter spaces. 8. Taken Boy Buddy Holly and Waylon Jennings are telling a story of a dusty time on the road while waiting for the 9. Remember Mayan studio engineer in the mechanical room to say ‘go’. Buddy had been dead for years but it feels like it’s 10. HORS_ 1951, and a tape machine is about to snap forward into motion like a car underneath the rock church dripping clay caps (much slower than you can think). It’s capsizing us into a of light guitar strum and hum of sweet tunings. Echoes on vocals sing of a room filled with music. A robot army looms on the other side of the mountains, well out of range of Buddy and Waylon’s farmhouse holler. Screaming at the WIG447 wheel and crank. The voices mingle with the elements. The robots bounce off the neon blue vapor of the Catalog Number song’s vibrations. Blue ice surfers riding on perpetual ice foam. A frozen mist appears outside and all the lights have a blurry glow in the haze. A car playing the Harden Trio drives by. The Driver wonders if it’s all Release Date March 22nd, 2019 a hallucination. In here you’ll find only the dreams that the music once sang of. It sings back through time and sings File Under Alternative “A” forward at us. To ease us in the crowded spaces. I’m on a stage singing out to a crowd of sweating faces. I don’t want to forget the pure spaces. Endless spaces. You leave them as soon as you enter. Drifting along in a space of beings. Bouncing on other lively things. The feelings. The things that never leave us. A full Formats shiny pot empties spilling water into a snow shaped well. Water had to find its way into the ground again. CD To be walked on by horses. To be dug up by someone working for a family in the insurance business. To find a home. To have the means to do so. To leave it or see it fall. To remember a time when going home UPC: 887828044726 wasn’t as easy as pressing the video button on your phone. And there wasn’t a particular direction to leave home for, just distance untraveled. On the T.V. there’s a tan spaghetti western film that glows in the corner of a den where previously we saw dreams rise and leave through wood-scented hearths. Morricone soundtrack blaring, but getting softer and softer as the old white car pulls out the long driveway to the canyon road. “Well how long do you think you’ll be gone?” “As far as it takes.” At work on Monday, the Robot Boss greets him bluntly: “You’re LP w/ DOWNLOAD late for my cleaning.” Misses Saturdays. Misses the dirt. Misses the mud, the blue pink sunshine drop behind the canyon towers. Robot war blaring in the distance. Missed that drive. You should have been awake, robots don’t sleep. One where the people most sure of their opinion are quick Artist: The Faint to take a stand and destroy anyone who doesn’t agree with them.” Title: Egowerk Catalog #: LBJ-279 His sense of urgency unfurls over the album’s frenetic, cacophonous tracks. And though the synths should sound familiar to any Faint follower, the Street Date: March 15, 2019 song’s monotone message is at once classic and current: “If I was wise, I would see I’m a child still asleep.” Genre: Alternative CD UPC: 648401027921 Elaborating further, Todd says, “It would be amazing if I could wake up from the world that I think I'm awake in already. LP UPC: 648401027914 If there’s a better way of understanding life, I'd love to be privy to it. You see the wisdom of all Gurus in the East, and you know they're not bothered by this or that. They've attained something, and the rest of us are just kind of banging into stu, trying to gure out what to do with our lives.”

But in terms of music creation, the band, which also includes drummer and backup vocalist Clark Baechle, keyboardist Graham Ulicny, and guitarist and bassist Michael “Dapose” Dappen, is very much wide awake. It’s been four years since *LP INCLUDES DIGITAL DOWNLOAD the Saddle Creek agship act dropped a proper studio album, and more than two decades since they rst tore onto the Midwest scene, alongside area staples Cursive and Bright Eyes, with anxious electro-pop-punk anthems that meshed doomsday themes with thudding dance-oor hooks. LP NOT RETURNABLE Now with their latest eort, the group began to construct Egowerk shortly after releasing their 2016 career-spanning record, CAPSULE:1999-2016, with Baechle making frequent trips back to Omaha from his new home in Philadelphia to mix the record. “We came up with the foundation of nearly an entire song each day, every day,” says Fink. “We worked really fast and made a lot of progress at the beginning.”

“As a band, we did the whole record ourselves,” says Baechle, who also oversaw the production on Egowerk. “We voted to produce it as a band. For me, personally, this was the biggest dierence between this album and others.”

Recording at Enamel Studios in Omaha, The Faint composed 11 blistering tracks that explore society’s current relation- ship to, well, themselves. “I have work to do on my ego, and so does everyone else,” says Fink. “It's become really noticeable with the state of the world, especially when we're on communications platforms, social media and all that stu. We have to ask ourselves why we're doing what we're doing. Is it an ego trip? Are we trying to make other people do what we wish we would do? Or are we just trying to feel better than other people and taking people down?”

Despite The Faint’s nihilistic musings on Egowerk, Fink and Baechle remain optimistic that things can improve if society is willing to absorb dueling perspectives. “The more you learn about any issue, any issue at all, the more you understand that it's more complicated than you think,” Fink says. “I'd like to see people less convinced that they're right about everything all the time. I guess I think we'll gure it out as time goes on.”

Legendary Texan artist Terry Allen occupies a unique position straddling the frontiers of and conceptual art; he has worked with everyone from Guy Clark to to Lucinda Williams, and his artwork resides in museums worldwide. Pedal Steal + Four Corners collects, for the first time, Allen’s radio plays and long-form narrative audio works—two and a half hours of cinematic songs, stories, and country-concrète sound collage—in a deluxe gatefold edition, including one LP, three CDs, a DL code, and an exhaustive 28pp. color booklet boasting the first in-depth essay to explore this singular body of work; dozens of images of Allen’s related visual art; and full scripts and credits for all five pieces (a total of 33k words). Pedal Steal (1985), originally composed as a soundtrack to a dance performance, appears on vinyl for the first time, as well as on CD. Torso Hell (1986), Bleeder (1990), Reunion (a return to Juarez) (1992), and Dugout (1993) comprise the Four Corners suite, radio plays broadcast on NPR and never before released, now spanning two CDs. All audio has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes. Fans of Allen’s violent masterpiece Juarez will find much to love in these haunting Southwestern desert dramas, which featureJo Harvey Allen, , Butch Hancock, Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys, and many others. Roger Corman tried to option the film rights;Jesse Helms tried to ban them; now you can own them! I think there are three great American inventions: one is duct tape, one is hot glue, and the other one is putting radios in cars. – Terry Allen, “A Self-Interview,” 1994 The five works on Terry Allen’s Pedal Steal + Four Corners were all created during a period of intense, condensed creativity spanning eight years, are all closely related to his interdisciplinary bodies of visual art and performance, and are all set in the American Southwest and West. Like Allen’s songwriting, which only nominally fits within the realm of country music (“Which country?” Terry quips), his work for radio, and his long-form narrative audio recordings more broadly, appropriate the general form and format of the genre, or medium, of popular radio dramas—monologue, dialogue, songs, interstitial instrumentals, and diegetic sound cues within a roughly thirty minute running time—but transform it into something much denser with meaning within a context. CAT #: VNL840 CD: 3 760 063 731 309 2LP: 3 760 063 731 316 GENRE: French Pop – French Chanson

RELEASE DATE: March 15, 2019

LABEL: IRFAN (le label)

Amours grises & colères rouges. (Grey love and red anger) A strong and meaningful title. As is the opening song “Pas ma haine” (« Not my hatred »), inspired by the book by Antoine Leiris, a journalist who lost his wife during the Paris attacks at the Bataclan venue.

Faithful as always to their ethical and mindset requirements, Les Ogres keep the civic interrogations and concerns of today awake while musically reviving one's ability to vibrate and move around. No moralising injunction here, just a relentless observation. A song by this quartet is, anyway, just several ideas thrown in a suitcase, before the escape. This is a cheerfully abundant record that plays with the idioms of french chanson and the axioms of world music. A record full of energy, impetus and subtlety. A record that draws its strength from its permanent honesty.

This is a record on which the bottle is as important as the drunkenness. And it's above all a record that celebrates first times. The first time where the band delegates the production to other driving forces : Loo & Placido, Rémi Sanchez (Zebda) and Damny Baluteau (La Phaze). The first time where machines are invited – with parsimony – among trumpets, percussions, guitars, basses, , violins, and organ... The first time, finally, where the love songs – grey, should we need to remind you – intrude in force and share the spotlight with the social songs. Be it tattered love (P'tit coeur), fighting romances (Si tu restes), or unrepairable love, (S'il nous plait). Written for a duet with Barbara Weldens (who sadly passed away during the summer of 2017), Pour toi looks like a poignant tribute.

As conscience awakeners and under the inflection of a dose of sarcasm, Les Ogres imagine the Chanson pour dans 2000 ans (Song for 2000 years ahead), when people will have stopped their eternal absurdities and when “there will no longer be any allegiance between a black man and a white man on Earth”. There is also an attempt at finding a cure to the disease of the century (La nombrilite aigue, ie the extreme navel-gazing), a list of resolutions that shatters (Tous les matins immondes), a grand trial about incest (Hé papa), the words of a friend who passed away from too much excess (Latrim), a rebellion against the fate of women (Pas une femme). It is hard to imagine an album of these tireless troubadours without a bunch of guests. It's a matter of principles for them. As on their previous delivery, the dashing from Benin Eyo'nlé joins the party and orders some straightforward swaying on three tracks. As for Magyd Cherfi and Lior Shoov, their combined voices help celebrate a moment of beautiful love against the chaos of the world (Il y a ta bouche)

The 25th Anniversary party continues…

Following the magnificent releases and shows honouring the 25th anniversary of Apoptygma Berzerk's debut album Soli Deo Gloria, the Norwegian electronic-rock outfit headed by presents SDGXXV, available on CD, double-vinyl, and cassette editions.

Re-imagining Soli Deo Gloria was not an easy task. Groth and co. looked for artists who would not simply provide remixes, but, rather, re-conceived versions that are not only spectacular in their own right, but also go down to the roots of what made the original Apop record so special. The band looked to old friends such as Cronos Titan, but also commissioned music from a new breed of artists who are changing the landscape today. The EBM of Ancient Methods finds a home on SDGXXV, for example. The entire collection is as eclectic as it is creative, and as timely as it is classic.

This collaborative effort not only does justice to the original album concept, it also breathes new life into a true masterpiece.

All four tracks from the SDGXXV EP will be included on the album.

With the fifth release and the first 7inch on the quality imprint, Notes On A Journey turns its attention to Brazil. Finally, one might think, since it’s an open secret that the guys behind the label all have a soft spot for music from the leading coffee exporter in the world. So, when Brazilian DJ, record collector and digger extraordinaire Junior Santos brought this Celso Rubinstein 7-inch EP (called «Compacto» in Brazil) to the Berlin label’s attention he hadn’t to do a lot of persuading to have NOAJ reintroduce this beautiful piece of music to fans around the world some 36 years after its first appearance. Born in Brazil to a family of Holocaust survivors, Celso Rubinstein’s career as a singer allowed him to take residency in several countries including Spain, Portugal, Israel and Britain. He performed as an artist in numerous clubs and supported other artists as backing vocalist. In 1982 he booked studio time at Chico Batera’s studio in Rio De Janeiro to record two songs for an intentional debut album. On Enquanto Houver, written by Paulinho Mendonça and Gerson Conrad, Rubinstein tried to infuse some rap flavour: «I wanted to get away from that style of singing where you sing a bunch of notes without breathing. You can hear that all the words in the song are pronounced properly but the cadence is broken up, so the intention was to do a kind of rap without it seeming to be rap. Marina Lima and Antonio Cicero contributed È A Vida Que Diz, a song as marvelously written as much as performed sophisticatedly by Rubinstein with his star-studded studio crew. Amongst them: Oberdan Magalhães and Claudio Stevenson from Banda Black Rio, Rique Pantoja, keyboard player, arranger and conductor Reinaldo Arias, as well as American Don Harris. Celso Rubinstein wanted to create a unique atmosphere for the recording sessions, inviting numerous people to the control room to amplify the spontaneous live feeling even more (the control room was filled with people like Ney Matogrosso, As Frenéticas, Claudia Telles, Fátima Guedes.) You definitely can hear this vitality on the record originally published in 1982 by Rubinstein himself. Since there was a massive vinyl shortage at the time in Brazil, no label had any spare material to waste on newcomers. Only the label Tapecar, which had its own pressing plant, helped Rubinstein out and used the left over material from the manufacture of Gal Costa’s latest album («Minha Voz») to have his 7” privately pressed. Needless to say that it missed any recognition back then. But now, 36 years later, thanks to Junior Santos and Notes On A Journey a broad audience has the joy to finally embrace this beautiful music wholeheartedly. [email protected]

As part of their 20th Anniversary celebrations, Strut present the first new volume in their pioneering ‘ 70’ series for over 8 years, bringing together rare highlife, Afro- and juju from the ‘70s and early ‘80s. Compiled by collector and DJ Duncan Brooker, this new selection of tracks is receiving its first international release outside of Nigeria.

The compilation returns to a fertile heyday in Nigerian music when established styles like highlife and juju became infused with elements of Western jazz, soul and funk and musicians brought a proud new message post-independence. Brooker places the spotlight particularly on some of the incredible Ukwuani musicians from the Delta State region as guitarist Rogana Ottah and Steady Arobby’s International Brothers Band forged their own fluid brand of highlife and soulman Don Bruce drew on the US R&B greats for a series of great albums and explosive stage shows at his residency at Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Elsewhere, the album explores the close connection between Nigeria and Benin’s music, most famously through Sir Victor Uwaifo, appearing here with a killer mid- ‘80s ekassa jam, as well as highlife hitmaker Osayamore Joseph on ‘Obonogbozu’ (Joseph made headlines in Nigeria for very different reasons in 2017, surviving a one Tracklisting (All Formats) month kidnapping ordeal). 1CD Other tracks include ‘Sickness’ a 1979 lament on how all countries share troubles by 1. Luke Abbott – Music From The Edge Of An Island

LP / LPLTD tracklist FLOAT proudly welcomes their second artist into the fold. UK electronic artist and Szun Waves band member Luke Abbott, presents A1. Sea a special 10-track album to celebrate Piano Day 2019 – an A2. Island international event series initiated by Nils Frahm which acts as a A3. Tree platform for piano-related projects. A4. The Archway A5. Waiting “It's a very self-contained body of work, I haven't ever made music with this kind of sound pallet before” – Luke Abbott B1. Seed Change B2. Moments ‘Music From The Edge Of An Island’ sees Abbott divert from his typically B3. Adjustment experimental electronic style to explore a more compositional approach B4. On Rope centred around VST instruments. Rather than the usual themes of B5. A Different Tree synthesis and improvisation, the album is lead by piano motifs, structured around emotive melodies and sparkling arrangements. The record began as a part of a soundtrack commission by producer / actor Jessica Hynes for her film ‘The Fight’ and ultimately became a fully-realised album. The film script had a coastal setting that created the record’s thematic idea: “I had this idea about being on the edge of England, almost ready to fall off a cliff into the sea but keeping your balance on the edge.”

The idea of writing for the piano had been ruminating for some months as Abbott found himself spending an increasing amount of time playing on the instrument. Without a piano of his own though, he found a strangely enchanting way to fulfil his creative impulse. “I used to have an upright piano, but I'd given it away when I last moved house, so I ended up using a piano VST in the computer, which I actually really enjoyed. Writing the music became a bit of a weird fantasy process, I was in an odd headspace for a few days.“

The writing process was remarkably quick, resulting in simple yet inspired pieces that subtly blur the lines between MIDI computer music and live performance. ‘Music From The Edge Of An Island’ can be seen as a collection of gentle reveries that sway between the twilight hours, marked by moments of soft, contemplative ballads and more active and expansive motions. Opening track ‘Sea’ begins with a mysterious piano waltz before unnerving synth drones take over. ‘Island continues with piano triplet figures plus added orchestration of strokes and airy glass pads, before heading into the melancholic ‘Tree’, bringing in more strings and added pathos heard in the restless piano motif. Quieter passages are contrasted with the Gamelan-esque ‘Moments’ and the uplifting ‘On Rope’, whilst more lyrical moments on the album can be found in tracks such as ‘Adjustment’ and closing track ‘A Different Tree’.

'Music From The Edge Of An Island' will be released on Piano Day, March 29th on LP, Ltd Edition LP and Digital via FLOAT. Every record will contain a ‘How To Take Care of Your Piano Guide’ which has been specially commissioned for the release. The guide is informative as well as lighthearted and follows the 'How To Take Care of Your Vinyl Guide’, that accompanied FLOAT’s first record release. Luke Abbott will also perform with Jack Wyllie on FLOAT’s Piano Day event alongside a lineup that includes Reeps One and FLOAT artist Andrea Belfi at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green.

RELEASE: 8th March 2019 • ARTIST: Steel City Connection • TITLE: Steel City Disco • GENRE: Disco

Kalita are delighted to announce their next release, Steel City Connection's 1978 single 'Steel City Disco', accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never-before-seen photos.

Originally privately released on 's Jeree Records, ‘Steel City Disco' is one of the most sought-after disco records in existence, searched for by most yet the treasured possession of but only a few fortunate DJs and collectors. A grail in the truest sense of the word, this is a masterpiece in disco form, guaranteed to set any modern discerning dance floor alight.

Featuring an evolving line-up of various Pittsburgh-based students from the band's inception in 1975, Steel City Connection featured a multi-race make-up of musicians, led by bassist Keith Stewart. They rehearsed religiously in their parents' basements, and quickly developed into a well-trained Tracklist group, performing at top venues across the city such as The Crazy Quilt and Pinball Wizard, accompanied by their manager A. Steel City Disco and even their own roadies. B. Dansation (Unreleased Extended Version) In 1978, with their hard-earned money secured from previous gigs, they paid to record and manufacture the single at Stream: Pittsburgh's most popular studio, Jeree, who then released it on their own label. However, upon its release the record sadly https://bit.ly/2TH2X8R failed to make the headway that it deserved, mostly due to their manager's failing ill health and the band's inexperience in Snippet Download: promoting music in the record industry. Although it received airtime on a few Pittburgh-based radio stations, it was soon https://bit.ly/2FnMSlz lost into distant memory.

'Steel City Disco' has since become highly sought-after as arguably one of the best privately pressed disco releases ever put to wax, lifting its status from a mere 'rarity' to a true grail for many collectors and DJs. It is our honour to officially offer it here for the first time once more, backed with an unreleased extended version of 'Dansation', sourced from the original master tapes.

Key Points: - One of the most sought-after disco records in existence, with original copies known to command eye-wateringly high prices - Accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never before seen photos

- Backed with an unreleased extended version of ‘Dansation’, sourced from the original analogue master tapes

Arkestra Title: Horace Tapscott with the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra Live At I.U.C.C. Street Date: 22nd March 2019

“I love Horace Tapscott! I love his music, his philosophies, and everything he did for the community that I grew up in” KAMASI WASHINGTON Soul Jazz Records are proud to release the first in a series of albums by the legendary Los Angeles radical jazz artist, Horace Tapscott and The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Horace Tapscott is the key figure in the Los Angeles political and underground jazz scene of the late 20th century – his stridently independent and radical music, as far-reaching, cosmic and spiritual in scope as it was rooted in the Watts community of Los Angeles where he lived. This superb rare, deep and spiritual jazz opus album was recorded at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Los Angeles, in 1979, and has been unavailable on vinyl for over 40 years. ‘I had a vision of the inside of this church, and I went there, and it was just like I had dreamed it.’ This location remained the residence of the musical collective for most of the 1970s. The music of Horace Tapscott and The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra is part Sun Ra Arkestra, part John Coltrane, part . This ground-breaking and monumental album (released here for the first time ever on expanded triple vinyl and double CD) explores the multi-faceted deep and spiritual jazz of Tapscott – Afro-centric rhythms, hypnotic bass lines, Tapscott’s stabbing modal piano playing and stunning flute and horn arrangements. ‘The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – Live at I.U.C.C.’ is a true high point in the cannon of great independent underground jazz music recorded during this era. Tapscott’s Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra was set up as a musicians’ collective in Los Angeles in the early 1960s, part of the Underground Musicians Association (UGMA), later Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA), an umbrella organisation for musicians, poets, dancers and painters in the neighbourhood. Out of this group came many leading players including Black Arthur (Arthur Blythe), Azar Lawrence, Dwight Trible, Phil Ranelin (originally from Tribe), writer Stanley Crouch, David Murray, Sebastian, Jesse Sharps and hundreds more. At the start of the 1960s Tapscott was part of a radical underground jazz scene on the west coast that included Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy. But while these other artists sought international success and the magnetic pull of , Tapscott chose to remain in Los Angeles music and stayed firmly rooted in the Watts community, organising the long-standing Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and the Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension. This musical and artistic collective was part of the larger Black Arts Movement that spread across the USA during this time - in similar fashion to African-American community arts collectives such as The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (and Art Ensemble of Chicago) in Chicago, the Tribe collective of musicians in Detroit, Amiri Baraka’s Spirit House in New Jersey, and The Black Artists Group in St Louis. After Tapscott’s debut album for Impulse Records in 1969, Tapscott and the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra recorded two albums with Elaine Brown, the only woman to lead the Black Panther party. ‘Seize the Time – The Black Panther Party’ also featured the artwork of Emory Douglas, graphic designer and Minister for Culture for the Black Panthers. Tapscott was closely aligned to the Los Angeles chapter of the Black Panthers, at one point working out of the same two-story building in South LA – while upstairs they planned revolution, stockpiled weapons and hosted revolutionaries such as H Rap Brown, Angela Davis and Stokely Carmichael, downstairs Tapscott ran the Arkestra, a number of which were also Black Panther members. Through this association and after the UGMAA building was raided in the Watts Riots, Tapscott was watched by both the FBI and the CIA and effectively black-listed from further recording sessions. Despite this, throughout the 1970s Tapscott continued to create music as a community experience, performing and running workshops mainly at local parks and recreation events and in churches around the Watts area of Los Angeles. The group performed for free, sometimes requesting an entry fee of a food donation which was distributed to poor families in the area. Tapscott’s music remained undocumented throughout the 1970s. It was not until 1978 when a new record company, Nimbus West, was especially set up by Tom Albach, specifically to record the music of Tapscott, The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra as well as a number of solo projects by group members. The music, ethos and influence of Horace Tapscott among Los Angeles artists is profound, McCoy Tyner commenting that in the 1970s there was no music coming out of LA that wasn’t linked to Horace Tapscott and The Pan-Afrikan Arkestra. In the 1990s a new generation of artists took inspiration from Tapscott; The West Coast Get Down collective, including Kamasi Washington and Thundercat, was involved in similar processes of cross-pollinisation across the arts in South Los Angeles working with , Pan-Afrikan Arkestra vocalist Dwight Trible, and his Brainfeeder label and others. ‘Our music is contributive, rather than competitive’ HORACE TAPSCOTT Originally released independently in 1979, this ground-breaking album is extremely hard to find and is issued here in glorious expanded form (triple vinyl and double CD) with a bonus track and with all its original striking artwork. This release will be followed next month by Horace Tapscott conducting The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra release The Call (1978), also re-released on Soul Jazz Records.

Time had come to come back to studio and of put a new stone in the history of the reggae. “ Back in the Black Ark “ begin with the recording of a cover, Sam Cooke’s “ Chain Gang “, song speaking about the suffering of prisoners used as slaves, story of the most poignant for Jamaican.

Thirteen other titles of the album also have each their anecdote, but certainly the ones where Lee Perry put his voice which really represent the atmosphere which reigned in the studio during the sessions, “Spider Woman” and “Garden of Life”, because they almost consisted there live and played directly by the musicians. That’s Jamaica!

Madalitso is authentic to the core and coming to Europe once again after demand from clubs and festivals everywhere.

The traditional duo from Malawi, who in the last year have been featured on BBC Africa, and performed at such festivals as Roskilde in Denmark, were first discovered by a local producer busking outside a shopping centre in Lilongwe in 2009.The connection that the musicians gained with each other through living this way for 10 years is evident in the way they burst onto the scene, after their very first performance outside Malawi, in 2017, at Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar. 6 months later and they were on an aeroplane for the first time in their lives, to do a 2 week European tour, and wow audiences with their down-toearth nature, and raw on-stage energy. Tony Newton Mysticism & Romance Release Date: 29-Mar-19 [Light In The Attic / Tidal Waves Music] LP / TWM26 / 742338383621 / $29.31

Tony Newton’s first solo album ‘Mysticism & Romance’ (1978) has both elements of his impressive musical past and his vision for the future. The P-Funk-esque bass grooves and fusion jazz-rock vibes, combined with spacious synths, unusual instruments and an all-round cosmic approach make this a unique and VERY intriguing album. What’s equally impressive on this album are the guest musicians featured on it. On piano/synth we have Sylvester Rivers () and Alan Pasqua (), on the guitars we have Charles Ferring (Barry White) and Ray Parker Jr. (Ghostbusters !!!), and last but not least we have Danny Spanos (Sly and the Family Stone) on drums.

Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the first ever vinyl reissue of ‘Mysticism & Romance’ since its release in 1978. Remastered and supervised by Tony Newton himself, this official reissue is now available as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition (limited to 500 copies) with insert containing exclusive & extensive liner notes.

Pharoah Sanders & Africa Release Date: 29-Mar-19 [Light In The Attic / Tidal Waves Music] 2LP / TWM25 / 742338383546 / $32.68

On the album we are presenting you today (Africa from 1987) Sanders plays with an all-star line-up consisting of Idris Muhammad, and Curtis Lundy. Muhammad brings his trademark tight sense of timekeeping, but with a looseness that we love – and Lundy’s warm soulful bass does more than enough to give the set a sound bottom- all this while Hick’s free lyrical piano works nicely with Sander’s spiritual horn.

The brilliant ‘Africa sessions’ features the quartet at their best...soulful but also searching for a strong groove at the same time. The music here is less ornamented than on most of Sanders’ studio recordings, where sextets, septets or larger lineups have been the norm, but this brilliant effort here remains every bit as compelling. Pharoah and his crew play with the utmost sensitivity and give a demonstration that shows us the full extent of their skills.

Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents: the official reissue of this fantastic album, back available on vinyl for the first time since 1987. Available as a deluxe 180g 2XLP set, with TWO bonus tracks from the same session that were not featured on the original vinyl release. This album is limited to 500 copies worldwide and comes with an obi strip + liner notes by American jazz critic & author Kevin Whitehead.

When pianist Bill Charlap featured Tom Harrell at a recent gig with his trio at New York’s Jazz Standard, he summarized the trumpeter’s genius as concisely as anyone could. “It is our honor and privilege,” he announced, “To share the bandstand with a man who is a living, breathing melody.” For this latest HighNote release, featuring a razor-sharp quintet with saxophonist Mark Turner and guitarist Charles Altura, Harrell & company combine complex compositions, seductive rhythms, advanced harmonic concepts, vibrant solos and sheer inspiration in an album which transcends the jazz idiom. This is perhaps Harrell’s most imaginative recording to-date, with the scoring for the piano-less, tenor sax and guitar front line ensemble sui generis among his work.

Jim Snidero Waves of Calm Release Date: 8-Mar-19 [HighNote Records / Savant Records] CD / SCD2176 / 633842217628 / $13.75

If you trace the path of alto saxophonist Jim Snidero’s varied output for Savant, you’ll note transitions with regard to instrumentation and personnel: from organ combo to quartets with guitar or piano, to the animated quintet music of tributes to Miles (MD66) and Cannonball Adderley (Jubilation!). With Waves of Calm, the veteran altoist enters a period of zeroing in on the essentials. As the saxophonist himself says, “I find myself editing more and more. I’ve been playing saxophone for a long time, and could easily play a lot more notes... [but now] you’re just looking for the right note at the right moment, searching for that one perfect thing.” With trumpeter Jeremy Pelt on half the tracks, piano phenom Orrin Evans at the Steinway & the Rhodes and Nat Reeves and Jonathan Barber completing the rhythm section, it would Jim Snidero has indeed found that”perfect thing.” Please pass this information on to the sales, marketing and buying services. Colemine Records was founded in late 2007 with the simple idea of putting out raw, authentic on vinyl. Since then we've been lucky enough to grow and work with some very talented artists and bands. Colemine is operated primarily by two guys, Terry Cole and Bob Cole, but the strength of the label is quality music produced by our artists.

Outside Music has been putting out new releases from the Colemine label since the summer of 2018. This is the first time their earlier catalogue has been easily accessible in Canada.
