No part of this publication may be reproduced without the written permission of the copyright holder Footsteps Across Time ABSTRACT This study examines the educational use made by military forces around the world, but primarily those of the United Kingdom, of visits to past battlefields. Investigation suggests this practice commenced formally in Prussia and may be nearing its 200 th anniversary; certainly the British Army’s Staff College at Camberley has been visiting battlefields for educational purposes since at least 1885. To date, no extended academic study of this practice has been undertaken, and no specific use of the Staff College Battlefield Tour Archive has been made in this context. An examination is made of educational theory, by which the effectiveness and value of battlefield visiting can be measured. This study creates a typology of battlefield visiting, and thus acknowledges a much older civilian tradition of making pilgrimages to past scenes of conflict (initially to pray for the souls of the dead), which later evolved into civilian battlefield tourism to destinations such as Waterloo and Gettysburg. The work examines the nature of British battlefield visiting, using the Staff College Battlefield Tour Archive, in four phases: before the First World War; during the inter-war period; during the post-Second World War and Cold War periods, and at the time of writing. Throughout the study, parallels are drawn with military battlefield visits undertaken by the American and German armed forces. DOI: 10.1177/0022009406062071 Tarak Barkawi Culture and Combat in the Colonies: The Indian Army in the Second World War Military history is a Eurocentric discipline, as Jeremy Black observes.1 So too is military sociology. They are Eurocentric in the straightforward sense that their subject matter overwhelmingly concerns the militaries and wars of European, and latterly Western, states. One response is to enquire into non-Western mili- tary experience as well as the expansion of Western military systems into the non-European world and the hybrid forms that resulted, as for example in the excellent social histories of colonial armies now available.2 But military history and military sociology are Eurocentric in a more significant sense. Categories and assumptions are derived from European histories. Debate over the sources and nature of combat motivation and battlefield conduct, for example, takes place almost entirely on Western terrain, and in no small measure concerns the armed forces of a single power in the second world war — Germany. Non- Western military histories can play an important role in enquiry into why and how soldiers fight. They can critically interrogate the terms of the debate through comparison and contrast, providing new perspective on what is, after all, parochial European experience.3 Some of the insights offered by this ‘post- colonial turn’ are found at the intersection of the British Indian army and questions of combat motivation and the sources of battlefield conduct.

    HISTORY OF THE ALDERSHOT BRANCH, RSA Edition 2, June 2020 The author acknowledges with grateful thanks the considerable help received in compiling the military history content of this update. Paul Vickers, Chairman, Friends of the Aldershot Military Museum, generously provided much detailed information on Aldershot Garrison aspects. The story of the formation of C Troop was drawn from the research work of branch member, David Mullineaux, written up in the Royal Signals Institution Journal of Spring 2010. Branch Committee Member, Neville Lyons not only provided the lists of events and talks but also proof read the whole document and made valued suggestions on presentation. Historical Background There has been a strong link between Aldershot and the evolution of modern Army signalling ever since the establishment of the first Royal Engineers Telegraph Troop there in 1871. As the technology developed, so did the number of units both in Aldershot and worldwide with the result that at the end of the Great War there were 70,000 men serving in the Royal Engineers Signal Service. This led in 1920 to the formation of the Royal Corps of Signals which has maintained a continuous link with the Town and Garrison of Aldershot to this day. The full story of this evolutionary process is set out in a further new paper entitled “Aldershot: the Cradle of Army Signalling.” The technical and organisational details given there are separate from the history of the Association branch but there is a connection between the two stories which was particularly close in the early years of Royal Signals because of the units and individuals involved.

    Journal of Military and Strategic VOLUME 14, ISSUE 1, FALL 2011 Studies A Stepping Stone to Success: Operation Battleaxe (June 1941) and the Development of the British Tactical Air Doctrine Mike Bechthold On 16 February 1943 a meeting was held in Tripoli attended by senior American and British officers to discuss the various lessons learned during the Libyan campaign. The focus of the meeting was a presentation by General Bernard Montgomery. This "gospel according to Montgomery," as it was referred to by Air Chief Marshal Arthur Tedder, set out very clearly Monty's beliefs on how air power should be used to support the army.1 Among the tenets Montgomery articulated was his conviction of the importance of air power: "Any officer who aspires to hold high command in war must understand clearly certain principles regarding the use of air power." Montgomery also believed that flexibility was the greatest asset of air power. This allowed it to be applied as a "battle-winning factor of the first importance." As well, he fully endorsed the air force view of centralized control: "Nothing could be more fatal to successful results than to dissipate the air resource into small packets placed under the control of army formation commanders, with each packet working on its own plan. The soldier must not expect, or wish, to exercise direct command over air striking forces." Daniel Pellerin Supervisor: Serge Marc Durflinger 2016 During the Second World War, training was the Canadian Army’s longest sustained activity. Aside from isolated engagements at Hong Kong and Dieppe, the Canadians did not fight in a protracted campaign until the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The years that Canadian infantry units spent training in the United Kingdom were formative in the history of the Canadian Army. Despite what much of the historical literature has suggested, training succeeded in making the Canadian infantry capable of succeeding in battle against German forces. Canadian infantry training showed a definite progression towards professionalism and away from a pervasive prewar mentality that the infantry was a largely unskilled arm and that training infantrymen did not require special expertise. From 1939 to 1941, Canadian infantry training suffered from problems ranging from equipment shortages to poor senior leadership. In late 1941, the Canadians were introduced to a new method of training called “battle drill,” which broke tactical manoeuvres into simple movements, encouraged initiative among junior leaders, and greatly boosted the men’s morale.
