Introduction Hi friends, This post explains what is known as “legendary 12-point brahmacharya formula” to successfully practise brahmacharya and also gives a comprehensive collection of greatly inspiring brahmacharya (celibacy) quotes. Because lust is present in even deeper layers of our subconscious mind and hence, we need to wash our mind daily with the water of brahmacharya quotes so that the dirt of lust gets removed from the mind and our brahmacharya sanskara becomes fully strong – this is equivalent to holy company (satsang). This rule is most important in the first 12 years of brahmacharya practice as during first 12 years, everyone faces great chances for downfall. 12 years’ unbroken brahmacharya (celibacy) and kundalini awakening Since akhand brahmacharya (unbroken celibacy) for minimum 12 years at-a-stretch is a sine- qua-non (an absolute must) for awakening kundalini and realizing Self-bliss, every spiritual aspirant needs to use all tricks of mind to achieve this state. Brahmacharya was quite challenging even in old times when there were no glossy newspaper, magazines, television, movies and internet, so what to say of present times. The problem becomes particularly tricky in light of huge bombardment of mind in today’s world with all kinds of lust-exciting images – combine that with mind’s automatic fascination with any intense sense-pleasure and you get a perfect recipe for Action-thriller movie like Spiderman/Rambo playing inside the mind of every spiritual aspirant, where the hero faces overwhelmingly tricky situations and obstacles, which he/she must surmount at all costs to realize the eventual goal of Self-bliss. Why at least 12 years of unbroken brahmacharya/celibacy rule? Because, nature requires a fixed quantum of energy for any major change. For example, water has a tendency to flow downward. If it gets heated, it does not boil unless and until heat energy increases water’s temperature to 100 degree centigrade. And once that happens, water starts boiling and getting converted into vapor.

    CONVERSATIONS WITH SWAMI TURIYANANDA Recorded by Swami Raghavananda and translated by Swami Prabhavananda (This month's reading is from the Jan.-Feb., 1957 issue of Vedanta and the West.) The spiritual talks published below took place at Almora in the Himalayas during the summer of 1915 in the ashrama which Swami Turiyananda had established in cooperation with his brother-disciple, Swami Shivananda. During the course of these conversations, Swami Turiyananda describes the early days at Dakshineswar with his master, Sri Ramakrishna, leaving a fascinating record of the training of an illumined soul by this God-man of India. His memories of life with his brother-disciples at Baranagore, under Swami Vivekananda’s leadership, give a glimpse of the disciplines and struggles that formed the basis of the young Ramakrishna Order. Above all, Swami Turiyananada’s teachings in the pages that follow contain practical counsel on many aspects of religious life of interest to every spiritual seeker. Swami Turiyananda spent most of his life in austere spiritual practices. In 1899, he came to the United States where he taught Vedanta for three years, first in New York, later on the West Coast. By the example of his spirituality he greatly influenced the lives of many spiritual aspirants both in America and India. He was regarded by Sri Ramakrishna as the perfect embodiment of that renunciation which is taught in the Bhagavad Gita Swami Shivananda, some of whose talks are included below, was also a man of the highest spiritual realizations. He later became the second President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission.

Today you have gathered here to celebrate my birthday. I am a renunciate. I have renounced the world in order to free myself from the bondage of birth. Since birth is bondage, then what is the value in a birthday celebration? None! However, this is from my viewpoint, not yours. I am not celebrating this occasion; it is you who are celebrating. I am your invited, loving guest. Scripture generously praises the celebrating of the birthdays and anniversaries of the incarnations of God and master gurus and has correctly ordered their celebration. Worshipping a master guru is the same as worshipping God; they differ only in name and physical appearance. The core of their being is the same. It would also be accurate to say that master guru is the physical body and God is the core of being. The worship of guru is not the worship of a person, it is worship of virtue and good character. It is paying homage to virtuous conduct, and it shows respect for knowledge. Those families, societies or nations that do not worship virtue never prosper. Worship of virtue is the only sure way of progress; however, that worship must be spontaneous and loving. There are two aspects of celebration: gross and subtle. The gross aspect is the consumption of food. The subtle aspect consists of studying the holy life of the guru, which is like drinking nectar, discussing the spiritual principles of scriptures, devotional singing, chanting of holy sounds, and meditation.

It is the symbol and embodiment of the Odia culture and civilization.
