The Emergence of Reflexivity in Greek Language and Thought: from Homer to Plato and Beyond The Emergence of Reflexivity in Greek Language and Thought: From Homer to Plato and Beyond Edward Jeremiah Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2010 School of Historical Studies The University of Melbourne Abstract The chief claim of this thesis is that the development of specialised complex reflexive pronouns in Ancient Greek is linked to changing notions of self, and that the formation of reflexive concepts using the pronominal system, many of which would later become crucial to the development of the West, contributed in an important way to the thought and culture of Greek society. According to Lehmann’s (1974) reconstruction, PIE had no reflexive pronouns. Sometime during the Archaic age Greek grammaticalised a new complex reflexive comprising a synthetic fusion of a personal pronoun and the intensifier αὐτός. Previously αὐτός had been added independently to mark unexpected coreferential use of the simple pronoun, but through comparison with better documented cases of the same grammaticalisation process in English and other languages, we can extrapolate yet an earlier stage in which the personal pronouns could function reflexively without the addition of the intensifier. This development indicates an increased use of the pronominal reflexive system as an extension of, and alternative to, the timeworn verbal approach of middle reflexivity inherited from PIE. There are subtle but crucial semantic differences between pronominal and middle reflexive representations which must be grasped if we are to appreciate the implications of the new pronominal approach. My thesis looks at the way in which the Greeks, and in particular the early philosophers, exploit this system and its capabilities to form fundamental and culturally important reflexive concepts such as political autonomy, self-respect, care of self, and conscience. As the English word self suggests, in origin a nominalisation of its reflexive morpheme, reflexivity ties in closely with views on the nature and identity of the person. Ultimately I argue that the development of the pronominal reflexive system, and the Greeks’ experimentation with it, assists the construction of the self as a concept rather than a complex, and as a being whose agency is typically directed towards itself in various ways. This new construction is supported by changes in the socio-economic structure of Greece that promote a sharper individuation of the human agent. My approach is therefore a productive avenue for accessing and characterising the radical social change that gave us the Classical age. The lithium abundance with account NLTE effects was determined from the fits to the Li I 6708 Å resonance doublet profiles in the observed spectra. Results. We find that a) fast rotators tend to have higher lithium abundances, b) log N(Li) is higher in more massive/hot stars, c) log N(Li) is higher in less evolved stars, i.e. stars of lower log g , d) stars with the metallicities >0.25 dex do not show the presence of lithium lines in their spectra, e) most of our planet hosts rotate slower, f) our estimate of a lower limit of lithium isotopic ratio is 7Li/6Li >10 in the atmospheres of two SWP and two non-SWP stars.

The frequency of brown-dwarf companions in close orbit around Sun-like stars is low compared to the frequency of plane- tary and stellar companions. Currently, there is no comprehensive explanation for this lack of brown-dwarf companions. Aims. Through the combination of the orbital solution obtained from a stellar radial-velocity curve and Hipparcos astrometric mea- surements, we attempt to determine the orbit inclination and therefore the mass of the orbiting companion. By determining the masses of potential brown-dwarf companions, we can refine the properties of the companion mass-function. Methods. The radial-velocity solutions revealing potential brown-dwarf companions are obtained for stars from the CORALIE and HARPS planet-search surveys or from the literature. The best Keplerian fit to our radial-velocity measurements is found by adjust- ment with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm.

The initiative came from King Alexander I Karadjordjević, while the Institute’s scholarly profile was created by Ratko Parežanin and Svetozar Spanaćević. The Institute published Revue internationale des Études balkaniques, which assembled most prominent European experts on the Balkans in various disciplines. Its work was banned by the Nazi occupation authorities in 1941. The Institute was not re-established until 1969, under its present-day name and under the auspices of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It assembled a team of scholars to cover the Balkans from prehistory to the modern age and in a range of different fields of study, such as archaeology, ethnography, anthropology, history, culture, art, literature, law. This multidisciplinary approach remains its long-term orientation. It examines the relationships that are formed between Helsinki and fictional characters, focusing, especially, on the way in which urban public space is experienced. Particular attention is given to the description of movement through urban space. The primary material consists of more than sixty novels, collections of short stories and individual short stories. Theoretically, this study draws on two sets of frameworks: on the one hand, the expanding field of literary studies of the city, and on the other hand, theoretical concepts provided by humanistic and critical geography, as well as urban studies. Following an introduction, which includes a concise history of Helsinki, a theoretical chapter charts the relevant concepts and theoretical approaches to the city in literature.
