Check out the Free Agent Wire. The next ‘diamond in the rough’ is waiting for your call. The league will NOT be conducting manager meetings moving forward. For the most part, very little is ever accom- plished. Voting on the rare issue that might come up at the meeting is futile as only a small percentage of managers at- tend. As a manager or league member, if you have anything worthwhile that you would like to see come to fruition, send me an email and I will consider it. If your proposal has a direct impact on other teams/league members, I will put it to a manager vote via email. During the 2016 season, a number of league members requested an adjustment be made to the men’s league bat re- strictions. Beginning in 2017, men’s league bat restrictions will mirror those of the coed leagues. Translation: any men’s league player 52 years of age or older will be allowed to use any bat in Column 2 of our league bat list. Remember, every league member’s birthday is January 1st. If you are 51 and turn 52 at any point in 2017, your SBA birthday is January 1st and you are considered 52 years of age as of that date. The league tie-breaker rule comes under fire every once in a while so I’d like to explain the league stance on it. The rule is as follows: In the event of a 2-way tie in the final standings, head to head play will be the 1st tie-breaker. If head to head play is a split, seasonal runs-against will be used as the 2nd tie-breaker with head to head runs-against as the 3rd tie- breaker. In the event of a 3 or more way tie in the final standings, seasonal runs against shall be the 1st tie-breaker. If seasonal runs against are the same, head to head play is the 2nd tie-breaker. If head to head is a split, head to head sea- sonal runs against is be the 3rd tie-breaker. If the listed tie-breakers fail to produce clear results, a coin toss or reasonable facsimile will take place. The runs-against total for teams involved in forfeits is to be adjusted upward to compensate for the automatic 7-0 score awarded to forfeited games. League statisticians will take the average of all non-forfeited games and assign that average to each forfeited game. As an example; a 5-3 team has a runs-against total of 60. In 2 of their games they were involved in a forfeit. The runs-against total of 60 is to be divided by the 6 non-forfeited games for an ac- tual average of 10 runs-against per game. The average of 10 runs-against per game is assigned to each forfeited game and the adjusted runs-against total shall become 80. Where the rule comes under fire is when there is a 3 or more way tie and the tie-breaker reverts to RGU (runs given up). Yes, it is possible for a team to beat the other teams in the tie and lose the tie-breaker if their runs-against is high. The reason it is done this way is for simplicity’s sake. Imagine the complexities of figuring out the tie-break if Team A beat Team B, Team B beat Team C, and Team C beat Team A in a 3-way tie. The league statistician would have to do all sorts of research. The managers would have no idea what the possible scenarios might be moving to the last game of the sea- son. With the way it is now, teams would know exactly what they need to do to win any tie-breaker that may come about. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s serviceable. Moral of the story, play defense to increase your chances of being atop any tie-break. The league time limit rule has been amended to read as follows: No new shall begin within ten minutes of the start time of the next scheduled game or within 10 minutes of the end of the last game. The latter part of the rule has been added in the name of fairness. It’s always been that way, I just wanted to put it in writing. You see, it wouldn’t be fair to allow the teams playing the last game to continue beyond the time limit. How is that not fair you ask? Allow me to give you an example. Team A has a record of 2-5. They are playing the final game of the day/night in the final week of the regular season. Team B already played their game and finished the season at 3-5 - fighting for a playoff spot. Team A is in a game that’s 12-12 when the time limit hits. The players coerce the umpire to allow the game to go one more inning even though it’s beyond the time limit. The umpire allows it and Team A wins the game. The players from Team B who were watching Team A’s game cry foul. They claim the game should never have gone the extra inning. Team A’s game should have ended in a tie and Team B should be the team to move into the playoffs, not Team A. And you know what? Team B would have every right to cry foul. They just got knocked out of the playoffs because league protocol wasn’t followed. The 1-pitch tournament career stat file will be revised to reflect only those stats from the coed 1-pitch tournaments. Men’s and women’s 1-pitch stats will get backed out of the equation. I hope to have that completed in the not-too-distant future. Softball America has been going through somewhat of a transition over the past couple of years. My guess is it’s some- thing like a 7-year itch only this one is 20 years. League old heads are calling it a career while a lot of young bucks are embarking on their own SBA careers. Some days I look around and find I can hardly recognize a lot of people. I could find nobody from the 1995 inaugural year still playing in the league. As of 2016, Andy Smallman is the longest tenured ball player. Andy started his Softball America career in the fall of 1996 playing for a team by the name of Dyson/State Farm. He played spring and summer this past year on a Friday Coed team named Andy’s Snack Bar. And so the new SBA soft- ball generation begins. Any Moms or Dads interested in playing softball with their sons or daughters can do so if they head over to the Softball America home page and click the link for the ASA Parental Consent Form. 15-17 year-olds can play in the league once that form is completed and submitted to the league.

Enjoy your off-seasons and look forward to seeing you all on the field in 2017. Curtis Hensman Tuesday Evening Men’s Doylestown Gold Exchange Nails Spring Title. Irish Car Bombs Take Summer and Fall (Continued from page 2) Exchange. They each smashed 5 homers and drove in 55 RBI together. Jarred Gardner carried the offense for the Car Bombs with a line of .714, 4 HR and 25 RBI. In the playoffs, Mike's Bar and Grill got hot to beat Vertex and knock off the top seed, Porsche of the Main Line. Meanwhile, Doylestown Gold Exchange downed the Goodfellas, then upset second seed Irish Car Bombs. A week later in the finals, Doylestown Gold Exchange took the spring title in two lackluster games. The summer season brought the heat and the bats caught fire. With Doylestown Gold Exchange folding, key players joined the Irish Car Bombs and the juggernaut was born. Irish Car Bombs brought the lumber and made the rest of the league their b***h. Scoring 168 runs for the season, defenses could not stop this offense. They could only hop on its back and hold on for dear life. Combining the two most prolific homerun hitters in SBA history, Brian Penecale and Jarred Gard- ner launched ball after ball into the night. They blasted 13 homeruns between them. As a team, Irish Car Bombs jacked 23 four baggers. Bobby Argeros starred for Porsche or the Main Line, leading the league with a .714 average. Matt Schaub of Vertex did what he could to help his squad, smashing 7 homers and driving in 25 runs. In the playoffs, Irish Car Bombs and the Goodfellas outlasted the competition to meet each other in the finals. Irish Car Bombs captured the summer ship in two games, thanks once again to their offense. The fall season brought with it the same domination by the Irish Car Bombs. As if they weren't stacked enough, veteran Frank Hackett was added to the roster. The Murderer's Row of SBA was now formed. Irish Car Bombs proceeded to go a perfect 8-0 on the season while putting up more runs than the previous season. Irish Car Bombs batted an insane .633 as a TEAM. That is just crazy! Vertex and Mike's Bar and Grill tied cir second place with a record of 6-2. Matt Schaub, once again, took the batting title with a very impressive .885. Brian "Hulk" Penecale (.815) and Steve "Pope" Gardner (.813) led the way for Irish Car Bombs. Pen also put up his usual consistent stat line of 5 homers and 26 RBI. Scott Carroll, also of the Irish Car Bombs, chipped in with 5 homers and 23 RBI. In the playoffs, Mike's Bar and Grill destroyed The Rock and topped Vertex to get to the ship. Irish Car Bombs finishes their year with a statement game in the finals, decimating Mike's Bar and Grill 28-2 to take the fall title. Curtis Hensman
