In Indien und Pakistan feierte man den 100. Geburtstag des legendären Urdu- Poeten Faiz Ahmad Faiz (1911-1984). Und in Indien wurden anlässlich ihres 100. Geburtstag zwei namhafte Hindi-Literaten geehrt: Sachidan- anda Vatsyayan oder Agyeya (1911-1987) und Nagarjun (1911-1998). Mai 1861 in Kalkutta als 14. von 15 Kin- dern und als achter Sohn in einer reichen und kultivierten bengalischen Großgrundbesitzerfamilie geboren, zählt zu den Wegbereitern der in- dischen Moderne. Er hat ein umfassendes Werk hinterlassen, das von der herausragenden Vielseitigkeit seiner Persönlichkeit zeugt – Tagore war Dichter, Erzähler, Romancier, Dramatiker, Musiker, Philosoph, Maler, Bildungsreformer und Pädagoge. Ein konsequenter Erneuerer der ben- galischen Sprache und Literatur, gilt er als Klassiker der Bengali-Kurz- geschichte, bereicherte Lyrik und Dramatik um neue Formen (Tanzdra- men, Musikschauspiele) und trat in eigenen Stücken auch als Regisseur HANNELORE LÖTZKE, CHRISTINA OESTERHELD und Schauspieler hervor. Overview: For many audiences, understanding of the PalestinianIsraeli conflict comes mainly from the media news of violence and of political friction dominate the airwaves, and we sometimes forget about the ordinary Palestinian and Israeli citizens involved. To get at the human element of the PalestinianIsraeli conflict, students will read, discuss, and reflect on stories from and/or about Palestine and Israel. Units are designed by theme/topic, and each unit contains readings from both Palestinian and Israeli perspectives on each theme/topic.This curriculum was designed for a grade 12 course. Timing: Suggested class periods: 21+. This curriculum may, of course, be shortened or lengthened depending on schedule, students, etc. This curriculum may also be developed into a semester long course. He contributed creatively to the three forms of ancient heritage-splitting poetry, modern activism and the modernist prose poem, and in supplementing and enriching the structure of the Arab poetic map in the modern poem in general, and the Iraqi in particular and renewing it with his creative cultural creative talent and his distinct expressive style. He was a brilliant intellectual poet, educated, ambitious, and bold in his poetry, and devoted a great deal of his attention and self-care, and his creative effort in his sober poetic speeches for the cause of (women), the symbol of love for the homeland, the land and life. She has been a teaching artist with the Washington State Arts Commission’s Arts in Education Program since 1995, and a writer-in-the-schools with Seattle Arts and Lectures’ WITS Program since 1997. Approaching the Civil Rights Movement through Poetry Jason Lee Middle School is perched in an area above the docks and railroad terminus of central Tacoma, Washington, which has housed a succession of immigrant populations throughout the last century. Recent arrivals from Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Central and South America have entered a community that struggles against being identified as disadvantaged. In January of 2003, I was invited by seventh-grade language arts teachers Justina Johnson and Chad Davidson to deliver a series of poetry workshops in conjunction with their current unit on the Civil Rights Movement. My goal was to get the students to care about civil rights by bringing the subject into the present tense. Most of my students’ parents were born after 1965, so the children were already twice removed from the roots of the movement. I wanted to show them that movements mean just that: actions towards change put in motion by questions. The first question middle-school students have is, “What does this have to do with me?” By asking the age-old question: “Where are you from?” I invited them to see themselves in the context of the ongoing pursuit of the American dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. -

In this curriculum project, a high school literature teacher has chosen five poets (two Egyptian, two Israeli, and one Palestinian) with distinct perspectives, hoping that students, in exploring these lyrics, will discover a wide variation of emotions and surprising similarities among opposing forces. The poets are Amal Dunqul (Egypt), Yehuda Amichai (Israel), Dalia Ravikovich (Israel), Mahmoud Darwish (Palestine), and Tawfiq Zayyad (Egypt). The unit groups the selected poems thematically and provides a brief biography for each poet. The unit includes only a significant passage (usually a few lines) from the selected poem; however, references are cited from which the entire poems can be accessed. Marion County in the Making
Foreword In presenting this history of pioneer Marion County, the Class of 1916 of the Fairmont High School wishes to make known to the public the object of this effort and to acknowledge its indebtedness to all who have so kindly assisted in the work. The past, present and future are indissolubly joined. We of this feverish twentieth century are mightily concerned as to the present and the future, but are in great danger of forgetting the past, without which we can neither understand the present nor prepare for the future. The days when in the long winter evenings the family gathered about the fire and listened eagerly to the tales of adventure, of hardship, of redskins, of goblins and of ghosts, handed down from one generation to another—those days are gone never to return. In this day we read the evening paper by our electric light and think only of the morrow. Of our grandfathers' and our great-grand fathers' time we know little or nothing. From written history we may learn of the pioneer life of New England and of old Virginia, but of the deeds and lives of our own ancestors we of Marion County are most ignorant. Some such realization as this prompted the Class of 1916, Fairmont High School, to undertake the collection and preservation of this most interesting and valuable unwritten history—history that was lived right here in Marion County. The great object in the preparation of this book has been to gather up new material. Information on such subjects as dress, manners and customs, homes and homelife, remedies and superstitions, songs, legends, etc., found in published accounts has not been used. -
