A welcome along the journey Continued from previous page are seeking confirmaon and first Eucharist) and catechumens (individuals who have not been bapzed and who are seeking bapsm, confirmaon and first Eucharist) declare their commitment to enter fully the Catholic Church at Easter. This year, the celebraon was limited to the Rite of Elecon, which is when the catechumens are called by name, and together with their Godparents, came forward and signed the Book of the Elect. For those of us who are bapzed, we can recall that it is God who first chose us, and we responded by professing our faith and entering into the waters of bapsm. In the same way, it is God who first called and chose the catechumens. Their signature, then, is not just a sign of their commitment to be faithful to the God who chose them; it is a sign that God has placed their names onto the roll of those who will put their lives on the line, first by dying in the waters of bapsm, then by sacrificing themselves and living as resurrected people every day aer. The inscribing of names then is less like a sign-up sheet and more like God taking roll call of those who will do God’s work in the world unl Christ comes again. When seen this way, it is only appropriate that catechumens alone sign the Book of the Elect, since we would hope that candidates are already doing God’s work because of their bapsm when they had first put their lives on the line. -- TeamRCIA.com Although southwest Kansas is vast—neighboring parishes oen separated by miles and miles of prairie—the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City is one family. And it’s that family that the bishop urged in 2019 to show acts of kindness in a troubled world. “Let us focus on doing His will this Lent and beyond," he said at the 2019 gathering -- the last me the diocese was able to gather together for the celebraon. "Let us do acts of kindness, compassion and love. Jesus will help us. He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!”

Continued from previous page In their joint statement, the 29 aid groups highlighted the significant challenges facing Iraq, including the dire need of the country’s 1.2 million internally displaced persons and 4.8 million returnees. “Iraq is the cradle of human civilizaon and a beauful country of rich cultural and religious diversity. For centuries, many ethnic and faith communies lived side by side in this land,” the organizaons wrote in their statement. “However, in recent decades Iraq has suffered from war, insecurity and instability and, most recently, from the rise of ISIS. Such a sequence of conflicts has deeply strained relaons between communies and damaged the country’s social fabric.” “Meanwhile, a worsening economic crisis, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, is pushing many into poverty and depriving the government of resources needed to assist its own people,” it added. One way that Catholic Relief Services has been working to help rebuild devastated communies is through the Shared Future program, funded by USAID, which brings together youth from different religions to work together in rebuilding projects. “I think it is a very interesng project because basically what we do is, in coordinaon with local religious leaders from different religions, we put together youth and let them analyze the common problems and come up with soluons and then we support the implementaon of those soluons financially, technically, etc,” Bernocchi said. “And so these are joint iniaves that are really useful to reconnect people from different communies, because you know the problem is that ISIS had this hellish project to destroy diversity -- and diversity is the social fabric of this country.” The unemployment rate for young people in Iraq is esmated to be 36%, according to a report published by the Atlanc Council in February. Low oil prices, government waste and corrupon, and a poor security situaon further hinder the country’s potenal for economic growth. About 60% of Iraqi’s populaon is under the age of 25. ByHANNAH BROCKHAUS CNA ather Alberto Ravagnani didn’t set out to make a viral video. He was just trying to find a way to stay connected to the kids who aend his parish’s youth ministries aer Italy went into lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic in March F2020. The 27-year-old priest had never edited a video before and he rarely posted on social media. “It was an experiment. I wanted to make something nice and useful to fill these two weeks -- what I thought the me of closure would be -- but the closure was extended,” Ravagnani told CNA in an interview. The priest’s first YouTube video, uploaded on March 14, 2020, and tled “Praying in the me of coronavirus,” quickly rose in views as it was shared across social media and messaging apps. His second, about how “10 minutes of silence can change your day,” was uploaded the following day and has been viewed more than 50,000 mes. Seeing that the videos were reaching people, he decided to connue. “I didn’t expect all of this. Also because it wasn’t the objecve, I wasn’t trying to get a lot of views,” he explained. But when it happened, the priest said that he realized it could be a way to communicate with young people in a creave way -- and he had fun making them. All of Ravagnani’s videos -- to date 46 -- have gained tens of thousands of views (several have hundreds of thousands). They touch on topics as diverse as the existence of God, video games, happiness, and why to pray the rosary. In the videos, Don Alberto (as he’s known in Italy) speaks quickly and has an engaging energy, which is coupled with fast- paced eding. And he does not deploy euphemisms, using language familiar to today’s adolescents and teens in each of his frenec videos. For example, a seven-minute video on pornography, uploaded to YouTube in October 2020, is his most-watched, with more than 396,000 views. “In fact, with the passing of me, I realized that it had opened a path, social media too, to speak about the Gospel, and to reach many people. Many people who, probably, in our usual acvies, we don’t encounter,” Ravagnani said. Success on YouTube propelled the new priest to Italian stardom, with profiles in major Catholic and secular newspapers and, most recently, an interview spot on the newest talk show on the state-owned television Rai. When he was in middle school, he became a catechism leader for younger kids, geng to play games with them and lead them in acvies. “This I liked a lot. Escúchalo a él." Mufasa mira a Simba y dice: "Me has olvidado".

– Obispo Gerald Vincke
