Thus, obtain my master’s degree in the Management of the Built Environment. Unlike many students who wanted to become an architect, I started the bachelor Architecture with the intention to end up in a dual master of Urbanism and Management. This came together in the Management in the Built Environment, where I specifically chose to dive in a topic related to the urban area development. The research is set around the development of the Haven-Stad. Immediately after reading many news articles regarding this development, I noticed that it was less in favor of the heavy industry. This raised many questions about the role of the heavy industry in urban redevelopment projects and I wanted to understand this from the perspective of the heavy industry as well as the municipality of Amsterdam. This led to the narrative, where I try to understand what the overall value of the heavy industrial port company is. How that could be translated into one or more alternative strategies for mixed-use redevelopment projects. It ended up being a journey through the various research topics as well as seeing a diverse set of companies and the municipality. Nevertheless, this research could not have happened without my mentors, Yawei and Erik, the interviewees consisted of various companies in the Coen and Vlot harbor, Minerva Harbor and the Cornelis Douwes parks, the Port Company Amsterdam, ORAM and the municipality of Amsterdam. Lastly, I’m graceful to the support I received from my family and friends.
