THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 23, Number 5 Thursday, February 8, 2007 Lubeznik Center Presents 2007 Regional Juried Art Exhibition by Paula McHugh Milo, Mabel and Elmer appeared deep in conver- sation. It was a few days before the opening recep- tion and awards ceremony for winners of the 2007 Regional Juried Art Exhibition at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts and they had the Hyndman Gal- lery practically to themselves. Canvases of various sizes, yet to be hung, leaned against the walls of the 2400 square-foot gallery. The juried exhibit at- tracted 291 submissions, to which juror T.L. Solien whittled his choices down to 59 accepted exhibitors. The trio of wood and acrylic fi gures, sitting on high, carved stools, spoke silently to the man who would single out his top choices for the award presenta- tion. Elmer, clad in painted coveralls and defying the convention of wearing shoes in such a classy gallery, did his creator proud: Steve Rebora claimed First Prize for his three-dimensional, cartoon-like char- Milo, Mabel and Elmer appeared deep in conversation. Citing a fondness for the story of Pinocchio, Steve told us that he felt a little like Gepetto when he was carving his three whimsical fi g- ures. “Look at Elmer’s nose,” Steve instructed, adding that he had con- sidered making the farmer’s ski-jump nose even longer. The artist also gave us permission to touch his fi gures and rearrange their fl ex- ible hands. “Notice how their conversation seems different when you change the position of their hands?” Steve asked. Yes. We certainly did notice. The artist told us that he received many comments about the texture of Mabel’s hair, as well as praise for the fi gures’ sartorial taste. “All the credit for the (clothing’s) colors goes to my wife. She told me which colors to use,” Steve said. Mabel, Elmer and Milo are “dressed” in appealing pastel hues. Steve, a Notre Dame graduate with an art degree, took the more “practical” route of earning his living in the carpet business after serv- ing in the Navy. Yet he said that his immersion into art, especially his love of working in wood, never faded. The artist, who has a farmstead in Cassopolis, Michigan, has other works featured at Elmer, clad in painted Studio B in Three Oaks, as well as a recent featured coveralls and defying exhibit at the Vale Craft Gallery in Chicago. the convention of wearing shoes in such a classy gallery, did his Art Exhibition Continued on Page 2 creator proud.
