It is hard to believe that I still have to wait another month to officially welcome students to the 2019-2020 school year. I’m so excited about the high-quality academic and spiritual preparation that our students will receive in the A National coming year at Holy Cross Academy. School of To provide an amazing education for our students, one Excellence of my most important roles is to help identify the right team of talented and dedicated educators to mold our students into young faith-filled scholars. It is my great pleasure to announce that Mrs. Angie Tomayko will be the new assistant principal of Holy Cross Academy. Mrs. Tomayko was our top choice for the role after interviewing a handful of qualified applicants from a deep candidate pool. She has worked in a number of different educational roles at HCA over the years, most recently as our technology director. I have found Mrs. Tomayko to be universally respected in the HCA community. I know she will do an outstanding job in her new role with our school and I am excited to work alongside her. I feel blessed that Angie has accepted the position and will move to a new position on our team. The only drawback in appointing Angie to the AP position is the big shoes she leaves as our technology leader. This position will soon be posted with the St. Mary Catholic Preschool Diocese of Arlington and our Parish Bulletin. As representatives of a society’s cultural values and political ambitions, the armed forces have traditionally been held within the confines of the modern state. Today, however, soldiers are expected to operate in the shadows of conflicts, drawing little attention to themselves and to their actions; they are physically and emotionally secluded from a civilian population whose governments, especially in the ‘West’, are proceeding to an unprecedented wave of demilitarisation and military budget cuts.

  • Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930S
Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread.

  • The Splintering of Spain
This page intentionally left blank ii ii The Splintering of Spain This book explores the ideas and culture surrounding the cataclysmic civil war that engulfed Spain from 1936 to 1939. It features specially commissioned articles from leading historians in Spain, Britain and the USA which examine the complex interaction of national and local factors, contributing to the shape and course of the war. They argue that the ‘splintering of Spain’ resulted from the myriad cultural clea- vages of society in the 1930s. Thus, this book views the civil war less as a single great conflict between two easily identifiable sets of ideas, social classes or ways of life, than historians have previously done. The Spanish tragedy, at the level of everyday life, was shaped by many tensions, both those that were formally political and those that were to do with people’s perceptions and understanding of the society around them. • Casanova, Julían, the Spanish Republic and Civil
This page intentionally left blank The Spanish Republic and Civil War The Spanish Civil War has gone down in history for the horrific violence that it generated. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the over- throw of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Here, Julián Casanova, one of Spain’s leading historians, offers a magisterial new account of this crit- ical period in Spanish history. He exposes the ways in which the Republic brought into the open simmering tensions between Catholics and hard- line anticlericalists, bosses and workers, Church and State, order and revolution. In 1936, these conflicts tipped over into the sacas, paseos and mass killings that are still passionately debated today. The book also explores the decisive role of the international instability of the 1930s in the duration and outcome of the conflict. Franco’s victory was in the end a victory for Hitler and Mussolini, and for dictatorship over democracy. julián casanova is Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He is one of the leading experts on the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War and has published widely in Spanish and in English. ABSTRACT AUTHOR: Robert E. Tripp, LTC, IN TITLE: Reserve Forces of the NATO Armies FORMAT: Individual Study Project DATE: 5 March 1991 PAGES: 120 CLASS: Unclassified Reserve forces comprise over half of the wartime strength of the armies of NATO member nations. With so much of this strength in a mobilizable status, it is important that commanders and staffs of NATO organizations know and understand the reserve systems on which they would depend in wartime. This study seeks to provide an overview of these systems in an unclassified format which can be used as a reference document. With the Conventional Forces Europe Treaty, budget cuts, and manpower shortfalls, some NATO countries have proposed changes which will impact on their reserve systems.

  • The Encomienda in Early Philippine Colonial History
THE ENCOMIENDA IN EARLY PHILIPPINE COLONIAL HISTORY by Dr. Eric A. Anderson Immediately the conquest had ended there appeared in the oolon'izatbn (of conquered territories and peoples) the need to apportion lands and Indians, as a reward to the most vigorous oonquistadores. The Indian was the essential element in the work of the land and of the mines. From this subjection of the indigene to the Spaniard \1.\'lS born the institution we know by the name enoomienda.l Introduction One of the dilemmas, of early Spanish expansion into the Indies was that of securing Indian labour sufficient to support those colonies, while ensuring to the Indians basic human rights. No royal commission, empowered to investigate and advise on Spanish-Indian relationships, was ever fully convinced of the legality (much less the morality) of the encom/enda and repartimiento for ordering natjve labour. At the same time, these or similar commissions could never escape the fact that Spanish settlement in and exploitation of the Americas was untenable with out native labour. 25 26 ASIAN STUDIES The encom/enda system, which had its roots in Spain of the Reconquista, 2 as a policy of rewarding meritorious crown servants in the colonies, attempted to reconcile labour needs with Indian justice. It takes no special gifts of observation or argument to realise that where the need for native labour was acute, and instru ments for the protection of natives inefficient and unpopular, these various ends were in continual and fundamental conflict. Encomienda, which began in the American colonies soon after permanent Spanish settlement, was scarcely distinguishable at that time from repartimiento.

  • A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo
A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo Chapter 1 Introduction This book is the result of research conducted for an exhibition on Louisiana history prepared by the Louisiana State Museum and presented within the walls of the historic Spanish Cabildo, constructed in the 1790s. All the words written for the exhibition script would not fit on those walls, however, so these pages augment that text. The exhibition presents a chronological and thematic view of Louisiana history from early contact between American Indians and Europeans through the era of Reconstruction. One of the main themes is the long history of ethnic and racial diversity that shaped Louisiana. Thus, the exhibition—and this book—are heavily social and economic, rather than political, in their subject matter. They incorporate the findings of the "new" social history to examine the everyday lives of "common folk" rather than concentrate solely upon the historical markers of "great white men." In this work I chose a topical, rather than a chronological, approach to Louisiana's history. Each chapter focuses on a particular subject such as recreation and leisure, disease and death, ethnicity and race, or education. In addition, individual chapters look at three major events in Louisiana history: the Battle of New Orleans, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Organization by topic allows the reader to peruse the entire work or look in depth only at subjects of special interest. For readers interested in learning even more about a particular topic, a list of additional readings follows each chapter. Before we journey into the social and economic past of Louisiana, let us look briefly at the state's political history.
