This compared with 65, 68, 15 and 0 respectively in 2001. Thus in 2005, the Conservatives ended with 22 fewer second places only 8 of which were as a result of extra wins. 25 of their 30 second places were to Labour. In contrast, the Liberal Democrats increased their second places by 11. As many as 17 of their 20 second places were in seats won by Labour. Respect gained 2 second places in addition to their win. Labour was placed second in 22 constituencies. .
