Notes on 2 Peter 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This epistle claims that the Apostle Peter wrote it (1:1). It also claims to follow a former letter written by Peter (3:1), which appears to be a reference to 1 Peter, although Peter may have been referring to a letter we no longer have.1 The author's reference to the fact that Jesus had predicted a certain kind of death for him (1:14) ties in with Jesus' statement to Peter recorded in John 21:18. Even so, "most modern scholars do not think that the apostle Peter wrote this letter."2 The earliest external testimony (outside Scripture) to Petrine authorship comes from the third century.3 The writings of the church fathers contain fewer references to the Petrine authorship of 2 Peter than to the authorship of any other New Testament book. It is easy to see why critics who look for reasons to reject the authority of Scripture have targeted this book for attack. Ironically, in this letter, Peter warned his readers of heretics who would depart from the teachings of the apostles and the Old Testament prophets, which became the very thing some of these modern critics do. Not all who reject Petrine authorship are heretics, however. The arguments of some critics have convinced some otherwise conservative scholars who no longer retain belief in the epistle's inspiration. THE MYSTERIES OF ISIS AND OSIRIS. BY HENRY RIDGELY EVANS. EGYPT ! —cradle of mystery ! For centuries the giant Sphinx of Gizeh, half buried in the shifting sand of the desert, kept guard over the treasures of the ancient land of Mizraim. Fast locked were the secrets of hierophant and sage, for no mortal was able to unravel the meaning of the hieroglyphics painted upon the walls of the ruined temples. Illuminated papyri were found in the coffins of mummies, but no one could decipher the strange text. It was indeed a "dead-letter" to the modern savant. Finally the hour and the man came. An ingenious Frenchman named Cham- pollion solved the mystery of the sacred script of Egypt, through the medium of the Rosetta stone. But this is a "twice-told tale" to the archaeologist, and needs no repetition here. Translations of mural inscriptions and papyrus scrolls followed each other in rapid succession. A flood of light was thrown upon the history, religion, and literature of ancient Egypt. "The key to the hieroglyphics," says Miss Edwards, "is the master-key that opens every door. Each year that now passes over our heads sees some old problem solved. Each day brings some long-buried truth to light." The fact was developed that the inhabitants of the Nile Valley were intensely religious, slaves, in fact, to the peculiar cults of the country. A ceremonial worship of the most extravagant nature occupied the attention of king, priests, and people. At Memphis, Thebes, Karnak, Abydos, and Philae ponderous temples to the gods and goddesses reared their heads to the blue sky. -

Oracular Sessions and the Installations of Priests and Officials at the Opet Festival Oracular Sessions and the Installations of Priests and Officials at the Opet Festival Masashi FUKAYA* The Opet Festival is known for its juridical function relating to the oracles of Amun. There are only three texts unequivocally relevant to its oracular sessions, dated to the Nineteenth Dynasty and later. However, other evidence can be associated with this celebration, based on the dates of events. This paper consists of two parts, each re-examining the known evidence and presenting new one. The new sources examined here are mostly related to the installations of high-ranking individuals, such as the high-priests of Amun, the divine wives, and viziers. Unlike juridical oracular sessions, the dates of their ceremonial appointments are rather peripheral in nature, taking place in proximity either to the beginning or the end of the festival. This may hint at the legal assumption of priestly titles prior to religious events and subsequent approval by the god in ceremonial settings, or reward ceremonies when those individuals received special favours from the king for their devotion to him after particular festivals. The author also notes that the accessions of kings were probably modeled on the same pattern in view that some rulers celebrated an accession anniversary at the Opet Festival in their first regnal year when they went on a tour all over Egypt to proclaim their new authority. Keywords: Opet Festival, oracle, decree, installation, appointment Introduction Clear evidence attesting Egyptian oracular rituals is known only from the New Kingdom onwards.1 We have no more than four examples from the Eighteenth Dynasty, all of which pertain to decision-makings on state affairs made by Amun at Thebes.2 Two of them are dated – II Peret 30 and III Peret 2. -

Albert Harrill Anthony Kaldellis Copyright by Joseph Michael Lipp 2014 Abstract This dissertation studies world-end scenarios in ancient Greek literature. It responds, first, to an expansion and imposition of the term “eschatology” beyond biblical studies into other scholarly domains (such as Buddhist and Hindu studies), and, second, to a lack of scholarly attention to the topic within the field of Classics. After an initial survey of past and present conceptualizations of “eschatology,” Chapter 1 contends that the term is not heuristically useful for Greek material of the Archaic and Classical periods. The question is, then: how might a Classicist address specific building blocks of eschatology that do have relevance to early Greek culture—e.g., the “end” of civilizations, views of the future, concepts of hope, the fate of humanity? The rest of the dissertation pursues the first of these building blocks—the theme of “the end”—in Greek literature from Homer (ca. 750BC) to Aristotle (ca. 300BC). Methodologically, the chapters are organized by theme, each addressing a particular world-ending cause or scenario: the world’s end by water (Chapter 2), by war (Chapter 3), in periods of time (Chapter 4), and by fire (Chapter 5). Within each chapter I analyze the material according to sub-topics, and then chronologically by author or literary work. -

That is the process attempted in these lectures of mine; and the true order and sequence of the facts can only be ascertained by delving down to the foundations in the physical genesis; can only be stated by means of the evolutionary method; can only be proved by the Wisdom of Egypt. I claim that on each line of research my interpretation is derived from the facts themselves, and is not arbitrarily imposed upon them, or read into them by my own theoretic speculation. I do but flesh the skeleton of facts. It is not the ancient legends that tell us lies! The men who created them did not deal falsely with us by nature. All the falsity lies in their having been falsified through ignorantly mistaking mythology for divine revelation and allegory for historic truth. Geology was not taught among the mysteries of ancient knowledge, floating fragments of which have drifted down to us in the Book of Genesis. The Christian world assumed that it was--or, at least, some sort of globe-making--and therefore it was found to be entirely opposed to scientific geology. Mythology never did inculcate the historic fall of man. Theologists have ignorantly supposed that it did, and as a result they were bitterly opposed to the ascent of man, made known by means of evolution! Such doctrines as the Fall of Man, the failure of God, and all that bankrupt business in the commencement of creation, the consequent genesis of evil and original sin, the depravity of matter, the filthy nature of the flesh have no other basis or beginning than in the perversion of ancient typology, and the literalisation of mythology. -
