Disney's West End Shows Aladdin and the Lion King PRESS RELEASE 13th JULY 2018 DISNEY’S WEST END SHOWS ALADDIN AND THE LION KING ANNOUNCE SUMMER POP-UP EXPERIENCE IN LONDON Disney’s hit West End musicals Aladdin and The Lion King have today announced that a summer Pop-Up will open its doors to Disney fans old and new in Covent Garden throughout August. Located at 25 Long Acre in the heart of Theatreland, the Pop-Up will be open every day from Tuesday 31st July until Sunday 26th August with a host of free interactive experiences and special events to enjoy. Within this unique space guests will be able to explore the iconic masks, puppets and costumes from the Tony-Award winning The Lion King up-close and learn about the inspiration behind many of the show’s impressive designs. Guests will also have the opportunity to step inside a specially-created ‘Cave of Wonders’, where they will be able to take a photo with the legendary lamp from Aladdin. The fun continues around Covent Garden’s Piazza where visitors are invited to delve into a treasure hunt to uncover four magic lamps – each offering a clue to an Aladdin themed puzzle. Those who unscramble the message can take home a limited edition poster as their well- earned reward. In addition to this, a variety of free events will take place daily within the Pop-Up including performances from cast members of the two West End shows, puppetry demonstrations and stage makeup masterclasses, as well as vocal and movement bite-sized workshops to get a first- hand flavour of the shows’ music and choreography. Tickets are now on sale for performances up to and including 9th February 2019 for individuals and until 1st June 2019 for group bookings. Now in its fifth record-breaking year on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre, Aladdin’s global presence has grown to six productions on four continents, seen by more than 7.2 million people to date. The show opened at Tokyo’s Dentsu Shiki Theatre Umi in May 2015, had its European premiere in December 2015 at the Stage Theatre Neue Flora, Hamburg, began performances in August 2016 in Australia and launched its North American tour in April 2017. Aladdin features the timeless songs from the 1992 animated film as well as new music written by Tony®, Olivier© and eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Little Shop Of Horrors). With lyrics from Olivier Award and two-time Oscar® winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony and Olivier Award, three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida), and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), and a book by Beguelin, Aladdin is directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Aladdin is designed by Olivier and seven-time Tony-winning scenic designer Bob Crowley, five-time Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, Olivier and two-time Tony-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis. The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from "Rhythm of the Pride Lands," an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to the haunting ballad “Shadowland.” The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed The Lion King animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay. Film music label Varèse Sarabande Records is celebrating its 35th anniversary at home and abroad. The Golden State Pops Orchestra’s June 15 concert Music of the 'Star Wars' Universe commemorated the milestone with a performance of Joel McNeely’s score, released on Varèse, for the 1996 multimedia project Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, alongside pieces from John Williams’ iconic Star Wars film scores -- not released on Varèse, though the label has distributed other orchestras’ renditions of Williams’ Star Wars compositions. Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, John Powell and other guest composers came out for the GSPO’s previous concert, a Varèse Sarabande 35th anniversary revue on May 11. Varèse executive producer Robert Townson, who hosted the revue, says he opted to work with the GSPO to bring Varèse’s anniversary festivities back to the label’s Los Angeles roots. “I sent an email to the conductor and said, ‘we’d like to do something locally. To be honest, your orchestra came to mind because of the attitude and the degree to which you’re making a point of celebrating the aspects of film music I really appreciate, the artistry,’” Townson says. Two more concerts will partner the GSPO with Varèse: the orchestra’s annual Halloween and winter holiday performances, held October 19 and December 21. Plans for a single revue concert grew into a yearlong Varèse celebration when GSPO conductor Steven Allen Fox realized how much Varèse-released music was already on the GSPO season’s programs.

    PROGRAM NOTES Disney in Concert: Around the World Quincy Symphony Orchestra September 29, 2019 Quincy, IL Notes by Dr. Paul Borg We begin our season with a generous offering of music from the films of the Walt Disney Company [Walt Disney Productions until 1986]. When Walt Disney died in 1966, the corporation continued his inspired and successful animated-film output. Although not all of nearly 200 animations, live-action films, television series, documentaries, or videos are equally memorable, everyone today has heard many of the songs associated with the films, whether from viewing the films, listening to recordings, or in live concerts such as this one. In the late 1920s and 30s films had newly been furnished with recorded sound, giving motion pictures real-time spoken dialogue among the characters as well as music that could entertain with songs embedded in the storyline. Music could also be employed to enhance or evoke a particular emotion--think the spooky two-note shark approach in Jaws or the "screeching" of the knife in the shower scene of Psycho. Walt Disney and his brother Roy extended these sound element to animated cartoons, short at first (Steamboat Willie) and eventually feature length (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). Disney's intent to continue a series of fairy tale animations was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he and his collaborators produced a series of training and propaganda films, even using Donald Duck in some comical short sketches. After the war, Disney turned his vision to television and then his entertainment parks, starting with Disneyland in 1955.

His extensive use of tone rows and permutations throughout the entire score helped to create the diegetic world so integral to the success of the filM. GoldsMith’s formative years prior to 1967–his training and day to day experience of writing Music for draMatic situations—were critical factors in preparing hiM to meet this challenge. A review of the research on music and eMotion, together with an analysis of GoldsMith’s methods, shows how, in 1967, he was able to create an expressive twelve-tone score which supported the narrative of the filM.
