But it is the beaches, spanning more than 20 miles of Atlantic coastline, that consistently take center stage, topping every visitor’s to-do list. With sandy strips stretching from Homestead to Sunny Isles Beach, the destination offers the perfect beach for every traveler, whether you are in search of solitude at a secluded beach within a park or want to see and be seen on lively strips where people-watching is the main attraction. Warm turquoise waters, soft sand and gentle breezes swiftly seduce visitors, who come to the happy realization that when you’re in Miami, every day can be Beach Day. Perhaps most synonymous with Miami is South Beach, which sits at the southern tip of the barrier island of Miami Beach and has been immortalized in film and on television. Stretching just over two miles north from South Pointe Park, it is a broad swath of white sands punctuated by colorful lifeguard stands and bordered by Ocean Drive’s iconic cityscape of Art Deco architecture, sidewalk restaurants and boutique hotels. Yet South Beach is just the beginning of the destination’s beach bounty. Farther north, the quieter strands of the Mid-Beach and North Beach neighborhoods have a distinctly low-key vibe, with plenty of space to spread your towel on sands bordered by seagrape-covered dunes. Heading further north, you’ll find the pristine mile-long Surfside beach and swanky Bal Harbour. Sunny Isles Beach, Miami’s furthest beach to the north is famous for its Newport Fishing Pier. Just minutes from Downtown Miami, Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park, Bill Baggs Cape Florida Beach Park and Historic Virginia Key Beach Park have calm shallow waters and are popular with families. Matheson Hammock Park Beach in Coral Gables is a favorite for parents with young children because its man-made atoll pool is safe for swimmers of all ages. Nature-Based Coastal Defenses Published by in Southeast Florida INTRODUCTION Miami Beach skyline ©Ines Hegedus-Garcia, 2013 ssessments of the world’s metropolitan areas with the most to lose from hurricanes and sea level rise place Asoutheast Florida at the very top of their lists. Much infrastructure and many homes, businesses and natural areas from Key West to the Palm Beaches are already at or near sea level and vulnerable to flooding and erosion from waves and storm surges. The region had 5.6 million residents in 2010–a population greater than that of 30 states–and for many of these people, coastal flooding and erosion are not only anticipated risks of tomorrow’s hurricanes, but a regular consequence of today’s highest tides. Hurricane Sandy approaching the northeast coast of the United States. ©NASA Billions of dollars in property value may be swept away in one storm or slowly eroded by creeping sea level rise. This double threat, coupled with a clearly accelerating rate of sea level rise and predictions of stronger hurricanes and continued population growth in the years ahead, has led to increasing demand for action and willingness on the parts of the public and private sectors to be a part of solutions. Practical people and the government institutions that serve them want to know what those solutions are and what they will cost. Traditional “grey infrastructure” such as seawalls and breakwaters is already common in the region but it is not the only option. Grey infrastructure will always have a place here and in some instances it is the only sensible choice, but it has significant drawbacks.

  • Miami Beach Getting Ready for Art Basel Dec. 1-4
Miami Beach getting ready for Art Basel Dec. 1-4 (AP) MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Live graffiti painting. A colossal rose bed soaring 20 feet high. Early photos of Andy Warhol, a Picasso up for auction and a naked woman living in a pig pen. They're all part of the lineup for Art Basel Miami Beach, which runs Dec. 1-4, with a host of related events beginning Nov. 30. The pig pen installation will undoubtedly be the most jaw-dropping event at the art fair. Known for photographing herself nude in subway tunnels or in front of graffiti walls, performance artist Miru Kim will be living with pigs for her performance "The Pig That Therefore I Am." "The immediate connection between pigs and me will be felt through seeing the living bodies mingle through skin," Kim told The Associated Press. A glass barrier will act as "an insatiable gap between the spectacle and the onlooker, just like in a zoo." The international art fair, sister event to Art Basel in Switzerland, is celebrating its 10th year in South Florida this December. Miami's art scene has grown tremendously since it started, and last year 46,000 people attended, not counting thousands more who took in ancillary events piggy- backing on the main arts-filled weekend. The trendy exhibits, films, parties and performances attract not just art collectors but also art-lovers of all means, tourists and many others who want to see and be seen. "The cultural growth emerged about 20 years ago when the world discovered Miami through the lens of South Beach," said Tony Goldman, chairman and CEO of The Goldman Properties Co., which has helped transform the city's historic districts into thriving, trendy neighborhoods like South Beach and the Wynwood Arts District.
