Serving the Northeast Ohio AMC enthusiast since 1991 AMX-Clamation!!!VolumeVolume 15 Number 6 Nov.Nov. - Dec. 2006 American Motors Ramblings... Scott Campbell It’s hard to believe that another car season has passed, my second one without anything cruise worthy. It’s odd, but without a show car in the garage it’s been harder to set aside days for car shows and cruise-ins. Being a spectator is still fun but it really isn’t the same, especially after having one toy or another to drive for the past 25 years. It was great to see so many NCAMC members and cars at the few events we were able to attend this year. Let’s hope this trend continues. Things should be very different for me in 2007. The pink AMX is well on its way to completion, for those of you not following along on the AMC Forum, she is painted, with brake lines and wiring reinstalled and by the time you read this the engine and transmission should be in place as well. I still hope to have her running before the end of the year. Of course I had set the end of last year as a dead- line for paint and that didn’t happen, so who knows... Anyway, it looks like there should be many great opportunities for us to bring out our beloved AMCs in 2007, including another big Kenosha show as mentioned in the last issue. For help in plan- ning your summer, check out our NCAMC web site for one of the most complete AMC show listings anywhere. ☻ ☻ ☻ The end of another year also means that it’s time to renew your NCAMC membership again. Included in this issue is a current membership roster. If your name has “06” next to it, your membership expires December 31, 2006. PLEASE take time to renew right now while you are thinking about it. Our super low $10.00 dues do not allow us to send out reminder postcards or extra issues to members who have not renewed. 2007 is shaping up to be another great year for North Coast AMC so please join us again. In this short article titled “Behind the Wheel”, Jesse discusses the background of his car as well as some of the work that was done on it. Since mice resided inside the Javelin as it sat in a barn for twenty years, Jesse had to completely redo the interior. The hardest part was the body work since the bondo where the car was hit had to be removed. His father Gary is also teaching him how to drag race. Jesse admits that he didn’t know much about Javelins when he first bought the car, which he bought mainly for looks. He also wanted something different. Javlynn’s Lust List (If I Had a Million Dollars and a Gargantuan Garage) Javlynn Sue Leair Heck, I may as well hop on the bandwagon with Shaune, Scott and Dan. (No, not in that way. They’re all mar- ried.) Here’s my luscious list of adorable automobiles. 1) Wild Plum Pierre Cardin Javelin - What Wild Plum does to me! Mmm Mmm Mmm! 2) Pacer - any year - coupe or sedan style preferred - Indian blanket style interior - just like the absolutely, mouthwateringly gorgeous, low-mileage red beauty that was part of Lew Brown’s collection that I got to drive. Love the poignancy of those expressive, round headlights. Love those curves; so round, so fi rm, so fully packed! 3) Matador coupe - reminds me of an anorexic Pacer - I just love those big, round headlights. 4) Wild Plum Gremlin - If I wanted another Gremmie - Yeah, and I guess a V-8 would be nice, too 5) Any red, white and blue AMC - Yes, this includes Rebel Machines, SC/Ramblers, Trans Am Javies and the like. 6) Any ‘69 Big Bad Orange or Big Bad Green AMX or Mod Javelin - Those are my two favorite Big Bad colors, which remind me of Halloween, my favorite holiday. 7) A Hornet hatchback - Heck, I love Gremlins so much, and a Hornet is just a Gremlin with a little more bootie. 8) A pink CJ Jeep - And if I can’t get a pink one, I want a camoufl age one. 9) A Rambler American convertible - one of the cutest AMC convertibles, in my opinion 10) Heck, ANY AMC, REALLY! Member Profile Dan Koch In this edition, we turn to one of our club’s newest mem- bers David Macy of Toledo, Ohio. David’s current passion is the beautiful black 1980 Spirit AMX shown here. Additionally, he has owned a ‘69 Rebel, ‘71, ‘72, and ‘74 Gremlins, a ‘74 Sport- about, a ‘77 Pacer Wagon, a ‘70 AMX, and an ‘87 Eagle Wagon. He included a card that reads “AMC Enthusiast, Conservator”. Of that I have no doubt as he revealed the following pedigree... “While living in the Akron area in the early 1970s, I met a fellow who was working at the AMC Cleveland office. I bought the ‘69 Rebel 4-door through him. He learned of JAVEX, the area AMC club that had just started up. After joining that, I got the three Gremlins over a period of time which we rallied and auto-crossed. When Mark Donohue was racing Javelins at Mid-Ohio, we attended those events. AMC cars even got to lap the Mid-Ohio race course. In 1975, we moved to Toledo and got involved in an auto-cross club called FIASCO (Fort Industry Auto Sports Club of Ohio). This was when we bought the 1970 AMX – 360, 4-speed, green with black mask hood, and tan interior. It was an export car – originally owned by an Air Force officer and taken with him to Germany (What a cool whirl on the Autobahn that would be! - ed.) The car had headers, a 3:15 rear end, and I believe it may have had the “Group 19” cam. I bought this car in Illinois from the AMC guru himself, Larry Mitchell. It was fast for a 360. Even with the relatively tall gear, at Milan Michigan Dragstrip, I spoiled the fun of more than one new Camaro beating them with a 12-year old AMC. The car ran 14:20’s at 92 mph. I finally sold the AMX in about 1986 – much to my son’s dismay! I got back into AMCs and club activities in 2004. I attended this year’s AMO convention in Dublin, July 27-29. I am currently a member of and active in the follow- ing clubs: Chrysler Classic Car Clubs Glass City AMC Great Lakes AMC Ohio American Motors Classics North Coast AMC American Motors Owner’s Association W. P. Chrysler Club P.S. - I might mention that my wife auto-crossed too and we attended to the “Ole Smokey Hill Climb” near Youngstown. We’ve also been to Nelson’s Ledges where Earl Daugherty runs his 185 mph Spirit-based sports car. Earl lives in nearby Hinckley and was president of JAVEX back in the ‘70s. He makes a great meeting guest and his son works for Track Time driver’s school. I have info on Earl’s car and photos too – let me know if you’re interested.” Of course we’re interested, David! The road racing corner of the high performance world is somewhat foreign to a number of us and we yearn to learn! Thank you for this diverse breath of fresh air and welcome to the club! Final Drive 2006 (aka. Halloween at Dale’s) Javlynn Sue Amber Veverka as Officer Jenny from Pokemon won the best costume award. The handcuffs were a nice touch. Molly Moyer and Mary Zavernik look on. Left - Since the weather was chilly and rainy, the Marrs were the only ones who were daring enough to bring their AMCs out. However, the turnout was fairly good with 20 people in attendance. Right - Tommy Zavernik as “The Dead that Eats” Mwah-ha-ha! Or better yet, get this boy some- thing to eat, because he is all bones!
