A WORKING BIBLIOGRAPHY of DAVID DRAKE's WRITING by Karen Zimmerman, May 2012 A WORKING BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DAVID DRAKE'S WRITING by Karen Zimmerman, May 2012 David Drake sold his first story in 1966 and continues to write novels, short fiction, essays and other miscellaneous pieces. Although he is sometimes referred to as the "King of Military Science Fiction," his fiction spans multiple genres. He claims to have written just about every subgenre except SF romance. This is a working bibliography, not a complete bibliography. This list does not include foreign imprints, and offers only a sampling of electronic text versions. The list continues to be updated at David's official web site: http://david-drake.com. THE TECHNOLOGY OF CONSENT: AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND CULTURAL CRISIS IN THE 1980s A Dissertation Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright by Chad Andrews 2016 Cultural Studies Ph.D. Graduate Program May 2016 ABSTRACT The Technology of Consent: American Science Fiction and Cultural Crisis in the 1980s Chad Andrews The 1980s in the United States have come into focus as years of extensive ideological and socioeconomic fracture. A conservative movement arose to counter the progressive gains of previous decades, neoliberalism became the nation’s economic mantra, and détente was jettisoned in favour of military build-up. Such developments materialized out of a multitude of conflicts, a cultural crisis of ideas, perspectives, and words competing to maintain or rework the nation’s core structures. In this dissertation I argue that alongside these conflicts, a crisis over technology and its ramifications played a crucial role as well, with the American public grasping for ways to comprehend a nascent technoculture. Borrowing from Andrew Feenberg, I define three broad categories of popular conceptualization used to comprehend a decade of mass technical and social transformations: the instrumental view, construing technology as a range of efficient tools; the substantive view, insisting technology is an environment that determines its subjects; and a critical approach,

SPRAGUE DE CAMP OR, THE COMPLEAT DRAGON-CATCHER BY ROGER ZELAZNY Let me tell you about L. Sprague de Camp. Thia is the sixth time I’ve tried. (It’s not that you weren't paying attention. The first five trials, wisely, are paper snowballs which my cat at least is enjoying. By and large, though, her tastes differ from yours and mine. Good thing, too.) It is a hard, hard thing to write about someone you admire hell out of, without sounding like an ad man pushing a new brand of filter-tips or next year's model Fordrolet. This is not my intention, but if it seems to seep in around the edges -- well, you know ... If you've read de Camp, that is, you know. I've never met Mister de Camp, so I can't give you a word portrait or even a line-drawing as to lineament and design, favorite frowns and smirks, taste in cravats, etc. All I know is what I've read in the books with the rocket ships on the covers and the ones without the rocketships, too. So let me tell you about the L. Sprague de Camp^ know. He went and wrote whole big stacks of things. The first one I read was called LEST DARKNESS FALL* Which is why I read more. Quickly then, I read ROGUE QUEEN.

The audience for this kind of fantasy saga should prove large and ongoing, and for this volume, at least, it will be well deserved." -- Booklist on Master of the Cauldrom. The Forlorn Hope. The Nebulas were presented at the 50th annual Nebula Awards Weekend, held this year in Chicago, Illinois, June 4–7. We’re sorry to say that “We Are the Cloud” by Sam J. Miller (Lightspeed, September 2014) did not win the Nebula Award for best novelette; that honor went to Alaya Dawn Johnson’s excellent story, from The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, “A Guide to the Fruits Of Hawaii.” Congrats to Alaya and to all of the other Nebula nominees, and of course congrats again to Sam for being nominated. Sam’s nomination brings Lightspeed’s lifetime Nebula nomination total to twelve since we launched in June 2010, and we’ve now lost twelve in a row.

And what a position ! They must keep it under the counter ! A few back numbers of ASF at McKay's, a PB or two at Swain's, but no hardcover items ! What's going on up there, gang ? Has it been declared subversive by your government now ? Anyway, after looking in vain, I decided to take in the sights. Glad to see that the Berger building is finished at last - also the elevated railway at the Quay. When will this be paid off ? Not wishing to wake up any ghosts, I di.idt tell anyone I was going there, but a little jingle went through my mind as we went along Oxford St. en route to the airport : 'Give my regards to Sydney,' 'Remember me to Taylor Square.'
