CHINESE JOURNAL OF ARTERIOSCLEROSIS 2010;22(22): 993 1.Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein and Stretch Stress Synergistically Promote the Activition of ERK1/2 in Macrophages NING Fen1, WANG Zhao-Jing1,2, ZHANG Zheng-Yu1, ZHANG Min1, LIU Shu-Ying1, LI Yu-Huang,HUANG Jin-Tao1,and LI Chao-Hong1 (1.Department of Histology and Embryology, Zhongshan School of Medicine,Sun Yat Sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510080, China; 2.Shenzhen Beike Biotechnology Company Limited, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518057, China) [KEY WORDS]Macrophage; Stretch Stress; Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein; ERK1/2; Atherosclerosis [ABSTRACT]Aim: To explore effects of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and mechanical stretch stress (SS) on activation of extracellular regulated kinase (ERK1/2) in macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Methods: The cultured RAW264.7 cells were identified via ink staining.Agarose gel electrophoresis was employed to identify and quantitate ox-LDL which was oxidated from n-LDL with copper sulfate. The identified RAW264.7 cells were subjected to treatment with ox-LDL and SS, respectively or jointly, for different dose/elongation and time duration, and then the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 in the macrophages was detected by Western blotting. Results: RAW264.7 cells could phagocytize ink, forming cloudy ink plaque or black particles in cytoplasm.N-LDL could be oxidized into ox-LDL by copper sulfate, since a single lane about ox-LDL could be seen in agarose gel electrophoresis, and the electrophoretic mobility of ox-LDL was higher than that of n-LDL, indicating successful ox-LDL preparation.Ox-LDL and SS could induce ERK1/2 phosphorylation, respectively, in a time and dose dependent manner, and dramatical increase of ERK1/2 phosphorylation was observed when the cells were co-treated with SS and ox-LDL. Conclusions: Ox-LDL and SS could induce ERK1/2 phosphorylation, and combined treatment of ox-LDL and SS could synergistically promote ERK1/2 phosphorylation in macrophages. This study could provide useful information for exploring the roles of macrophages and its mechanism in hypertension related atherosclerosis. 2.Selection of the Daxx Domain Interacting with Androgen Receptor TUO Qin-Hui, XU Gui-Na, GUO Yan, ZHU Bing-Yang,and LIAO Duan-Fang (Institute of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of South China, Hengyang, Hunan 421001, China) [KEY WORDS]Daxx; Androgen Receptor; GST Pull Down [ABSTRACT]Aim: To select the functional domain of Daxx which can interact with androgen receptor (AR). Methods: Four functional domains of Daxx were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and subcloned to a prokaryotic expression vector (pGEX 6p 1) respectively. The recombinant DNA fragments were identified by DNA sequencing. All recombinant vectors were stably transformed into E Coli.BL21DE3 and induced by IPTG.Four recombinant peptides were detected to interact with AR by using GST pull down in vitro, respectively. Results: The results of pGEX 6p1/Daxx/DM1-240, pGEX-6p1/Daxx/DM241-501, pGEX-6p1/Daxx/DM502-625 and pGEX-6p1/Daxx/DM626-740 from DNA sequencing indicates that there is no reading frame shifts and mutations in recombinant. The protein expressed from pGEX-6p1/Daxx/DM626-740 can interact with AR by using GST pull down in vitro. Conclusion: The 626th to 740th in amino acid of Daxx can combine AR. 3.Angiotesin Ⅱ Inhibit the Expression of Niemann Pick Protein C1 in THP-1 Macrophages and Decrease the Effluent Rate of Cholesterol LI Hui1, YANG Zhi-Ming1, XIAO Chuan-Shi1, and KANG Yu-Ming2 (1.Department of Cardiology, The Second Affilliliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, Taiyuan, Shanxi 030001, China; 2. Methods: Macrophages were converted from THP-1 monocytes induced by phorbol 12 myristate 13 acetate (PMA) for 48 h, and then they were treated by AngⅡ at different concentrations. The expression of NPC1 mRNA and protein was determined by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) and Western Blotting respectively. Cholesterol effluent was measured by liquid scintillator. Results: Compared with the control group, the expression of NPC1 mRNA and protein were significantly downregulated when incubated with Ang Ⅱ dose dependently. Meanwhile, the effluent rate of cholesterol was also decreased. Conclusion: Angiotesin Ⅱmay inhibit the expression of NPC1 in THP-1 macrophages and decrease the effluent rate of cholesterol, contributing to the development of atherosclerosis. 4.Establishment of Rats Model of Acute Myocardial Infarction LI Ying-Dong, ZHAO Xin-Ke, LI Zi-Jia, CHEN Xue-Juan, and LIU Kai (Division of Cardiology,Gansu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine , Lanzhou 730000,China) [KEY WORDS]Myocardial Infarction; Ligation/Methods; Rat; Animal Disease Model [ABSTRACT]Aim: To make animal model of acute myocardial infarction in rats. • A Failed Peripheral Hegemonic State with a Limited Mandate of Heaven: Politico-Historical Reflections of a ∗ Survivor of the Southern Tang
DOI: 10.6503/THJCS.201806_48(2).0002 A Failed Peripheral Hegemonic State with a Limited Mandate of Heaven: Politico-Historical Reflections of a ∗ Survivor of the Southern Tang Li Cho-ying∗∗ Institute of History National Tsing Hua University ABSTRACT This article focuses on the concepts the Diaoji litan 釣磯立談 author, a survivor of the Southern Tang, developed to understand the history of the kingdom. It discusses his historical discourse and shows that one of its purposes was to secure a legitimate place in history for the Southern Tang. The author developed a crucial concept, the “peripheral hegemonic state” 偏霸, to comprehend its history. This concept contains an idea of a limited mandate of heaven, a geopolitical analysis of the Southern Tang situation, and a plan for the kingdom to compete with its rivals for the supreme political authority over all under heaven. With this concept, the Diaoji author implicitly disputes official historiography’s demeaning characterization of the Southern Tang as “pseudo” 偽, and founded upon “usurpation” 僭 and “thievery” 竊. He condemns the second ruler, Li Jing 李璟 (r. 943-961) and several ministers for abandoning the first ruler Li Bian’s 李 (r. 937-943) plan, thereby leading the kingdom astray. The work also stresses the need to recruit authentic Confucians to administer the government. As such, this article argues that the Diaoji should be understood as a politico-historical book of the late tenth century. Key words: Southern Tang, survivor, Diaoji litan 釣磯立談, peripheral hegemonic state, mandate of heaven ∗ The author thanks Professors Charles Hartman, Liang Ken-yao 梁庚堯, and the two anonymous reviewers for their thoughtful comments.

The previous researches concentrated on how the socio-economic and socio- psychological changes had caused the rapid growth of the popular religious cults since the Song dynasty period, and they presumed that the rapid increase of the state and literati involvement with the local cults just reflected the increasing significance of the popular religions. However, I argue that the previous presumption was only partially right. My research intends to demonstrate that the transformation in the state and literati response to the popular religious cults was iii attributed not only to the change of the popular religions but also to that of the socio-political environment around them. In Chapter Two, I argue that during the period between the late Tang and the Five Dynasties period the difference in the local policies between the northern five dynasties and southern regional regimes caused the disparity in their stances on the popular religious beliefs.

  • A Summary of Textual Research on the Liji 禮記 (Rites Records) Liu Yucai and Luke Habberstad
A Summary of Textual Research on the Liji 禮記 (Rites Records) Liu Yucai and Luke Habberstad The Status of the Liji as a Classical Text The Liji is one of three texts that for centuries comprised the most important sources for classical ritual. The other two of these so-called san li 三禮 (Three Rites texts) are the Yili 儀禮 (Ceremonial) and Zhouli 周禮 (Rites of Zhou). After the collapse of the Eastern Han 東漢 (24 CE-220), the authority of the Liji increased gradually. While an important step in the Liji’s ascendance came when Zheng Xuan 鄭玄 (127-200 CE) completed his commentary on the text in the late Eastern Han, it was not until the Tang dynasty that the Liji became officially designated as a jing 經 (classic).1 Later, in the Song period, it was recognized as the first and most important of the Three Rites texts, occupying a key position amongst the Four Books (Sishu 四書) and Five Classics (Wujing 五經). To wit, two of the Four Books, the “Da xue” 大學 (Great Learning) and “Zhong yong” 中庸 (Doctrine of the Mean), were actually chapters from the Liji. As first-time readers of the Three Rites texts quickly discover, the Liji, Yili, and Zhouli analyze ritual from significantly different perspectives.2 The Zhouli outlines an idealized political system, describing the duties of more than three hundred bureaucratic offices. The Yili details specific procedures to follow during different ceremonies, including capping, marriage, mourning, sacrificial offerings, archery competitions, banquets, official visits, and court audiences. The seventeen chapters of the Yili all lay out specific sets of protocol, with significant overlap in content across chapters.

For additional information about this book https://muse.jhu.edu/book/8086 Access provided by University of Washington @ Seattle (14 Apr 2018 21:03 GMT) 2 Told or Written That Is the Question The field of early Chinese vernacular fiction has long been haunted by ques- tions concerning the origins of the genre. How was each of the earliest full- length vernacular novels—Shuihu zhuan, Sanguo yanyi, and Xiyou ji—related to the long oral tradition that preceded it? Did the popular story-cycles only provide the subject matter for the composition of the narrative, or did the oral model exert a shaping influence on the work in print on the level of narrative discourse as well? These questions are so hard to answer simply because we know so little about those popular traditions and about the textual evolution of the narratives themselves. Indeed, no words summarize our quandary bet- ter than these by W.L. Idema: “The prevailing uncertainty in these matters means that any view on the origin and role of Chinese colloquial fiction can only be advanced with diffidence.”1 In the case of Shuihu zhuan, a consensus has long been reached that there had been, before the narrative appeared in print, an oral complex of Shuihu stories. About that long tradition that started probably as early as the thirteenth century, the “hard facts” that we know are very few in number.
