Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

It was originally published in Le collier de la Reine ("The Queen's Necklace") by Alexandre Dumas (author of The Count of Monte Cristo and other adventure novels). The furor, against the Queen, was about a necklace. Not just any necklace. A 2,800-carat (647 brilliants) diamond necklace which the court’s jewelers (Charles Boehmer and Paul Bassenge) had fashioned and hoped the queen would purchase. Marie Antoinette, however, did not want it. Though she had previously spent a great deal of her own money on diamonds, she no longer desired to purchase extravagant jewelry. How could the queen spend money on baubles when people in the country did not have enough to eat? In fact, the queen had previously told Boehmer, the jeweler, that she did not want to buy anything more from him. Thinking he could persuade the king to buy the necklace, Boehmer convinced one of Louis’ assistants to show him the piece. Not realizing Antoinette had already rejected it, the king - who thought it would look wonderful on his wife - sent it to Antoinette. -

Archives départementales des Vosges 40 J Archives de la famille Ferry (1813-1981) Répertoire numérique détaillé établi par Mélanie GLESS stagiaire, licence Gestion de l’information et du Document pour les Organisations à Mulhouse avec la collaboration de Benoît MARTIN attaché de conservation sous la direction d’Isabelle CHAVE , conservatrice du patrimoine, directrice des Archives départementales des Vosges Épinal, 2005/2006 INTRODUCTION ________________________________________________________________________________ Historique du fonds Les archives de la famille Ferry sont entrées aux Archives départementales des Vosges en 1985 par voie extraordinaire. Elles ont été rassemblées par Hélène Ferry, épouse d’Abel, - lui-même neveu de Jules Ferry -, qui en a fait don pour une grande partie à sa fille Fresnette Pisani-Ferry. Cette dernière, dans son testament olographe du 8 février 1978, légua au musée des Ferry à Saint-Dié-des- Vosges « toutes les archives classées par sa mère ». Cependant, deux codicilles vinrent bouleverser leurs destinées en 1981 et 1982. En 1981, elle annula les précédentes dispositions au bénéfice de la bibliothèque municipale de Saint-Dié et fixa des conditions de conservation, de classement et d'accessibilité du fonds, dont le contrôle fut délégué au directeur du Centre national de la recherche scientifique. Le non respect de ces conditions avéré, elles furent léguées aux Archives de France en 1982, qui confirma, en 1985, la conservation physique du fonds aux Archives départementales des Vosges. Initialement conservé au chalet des Ferry à Saint-Dié, le fonds a donc été successivement conservé à la bibliothèque municipale de Saint-Dié, puis aux Archives départementales des Vosges, à Épinal. La correspondance de Jean Pisani-Ferry, exécuteur testamentaire de sa mère, Fresnette, et d’Odile Jurbert, directrice des Archives départementales des Vosges, en 1985, laisse à penser qu’une partie du fonds était toujours conservée dans une propriété de la famille Ferry à cette date. -

Bowler Abstract This dissertation revises influential scholarship on nineteenth-century French colonial policy in Algeria. After French troops conquered Algeria in 1830, French civilian and military administrations competed for control. There were two major points of conflict between the civilian and military administrative branches: the extent to which the French should adopt or tolerate pre-existing political and social norms; and, most important, the process by which Europeans acquired and settled the land belonging to the indigenous population. In general, the military, especially the Arab Bureau, advocated a tolerance for and acceptance of local legal and social customs and supported a slow process of European colonization. -
