Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

GETTING ROMANS TO THE RIGHT ROMANS: PHOEBE AND THE DELIVERY OF PAUL’S LETTER Allan Chapple Summary How did Romans reach the people for whom it was intended? There is widespread agreement that Phoebe was the bearer of the letter (Rom. 16:1-2), but little investigation of or agreement about the exact nature of her responsibilities. By exploring the data available to us, especially tha found in Romans 16, this essay provides a reconstruction of the events surrounding the transport and delivery of the letter to the Roman Christians. In particular, it proposes the following: Phoebe conveyed the letter to Rome, probably by sea; the church in Rome at this time consisted of house-churches; Phoebe was to deliver the letter first to Prisca and Aquila and their house-church; Prisca and Aquila were to convene an assembly of the whole Christian community, the first for some time, at which Romans was to be received and read; Prisca and Aquila were to be asked to arrange for copies of Romans to be made; Phoebe was to deliver these copies to other house-churches; and Phoebe was to read Romans in the way that Paul had coached her at each of the gatherings to which she took it. 1. THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE ASSEMBLY: EPISTLES OF PAUL THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE ASSEMBLY: EPISTLES OF PAUL JACK P. LEWIS In the Gospels, we see women showing hospitality to Jesus, women supplying him with their means, and women travel- ing with him and being around the cross. We see Jesus healing women, dealing with their spiritual problems, and using women as illustrations in his teaching; but we do not find any instruc- tion about their role in assemblies. The same is true of the book of Acts. Women learn; they obey the gospel; they engage in good works; they show hospitality; and they participate in giving. They are not depicted as being evangelists; they do not exercise miracle-working power; they do not baptize people; they are not elders in the congregations; and they are not pastors. No passage in the Acts of the Apostles specifically deals with the role of women in assemblies. We will turn to the epistles of Paul. Much of what Paul wrote is gender inclusive, relevant to and binding equally on men and women. Paul uses women as illustrations in his teaching. He con- trasts Hagar and Sarah (Gal 4:24ff.) and declares that the Jerusa- lem above is our mother (Gal 4:26). He speaks fondly of women as his fellow workers. The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews includes women: Sarah, Moses’s mother, Rahab the harlot, and those who received their dead by resurrection (Heb 11:35). The Epistle of James mentions Rahab (Jas 2:25). Peter praises Sarah (1 Pet 3:6) as a model for Christian women. -

Community Bible Church Instructor: Bill Combs THE HOLINESS MOVEMENT THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY PART 1 I. INTRODUCTION A. Though the title of this series is “The Holiness Movement,” we actually will be taking a more comprehensive historical perspective. What is technically called the Holiness movement, as we will see, developed out of the Methodist Church in the middle of the 19th century (the 1800s) in American. It was an attempt to preserve the teachings on holiness of John Wesley (1703–1791), the founder of Methodism. Wesley came up with the new and unique idea of a second transforming work of grace that is distinct from and subsequent to the new birth. This second blessing of entire sanctification is just as powerful and transforming as the first transforming work of grace—the new birth or regeneration. The Methodist Church eventually forsook Wesley’s view of sanctification at the end of the 19th century, but the Holiness Movement continued to champion Wesley’s view. Part of this Holiness tradition led to what is called the Keswick (the “w” is silent) movement. It is the particular form of Holiness teaching found in the Keswick movement that is of most interest to us in our study the next few weeks. The Keswick movement began at the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century became the most common way of understanding the Bible’s teaching on holiness in fundamentalism and most churches in the broader evangelical tradition—Baptist churches, Bible churches, some Presbyterian churches (also many parachurch organizations, such as Campus Crusade for Christ). -

How CHRISTMAS Reminds Me of a Day in LONDON! By Rev. Nathan Purdy It was a swelteringly hot, sun-drenched day. The yuletide tradition of hugging a hot cocoa by a blazing fireside, while carols play and snowflakes fall silently outside, could not have been further from my mind. True, my heartbeat was racing with a festive-like excitement. It had nothing, however, to do with a magical winter wonderland or the thrilling suspense of tearing the glittering paper from a gift at Christmas. In- stead, I was striding toward 49 City Road, London. And then, there it was! It was a heart-stopping moment; something akin to glimpsing a dream gift through a tear in the paper; through the railing stood the chapel where John Wesley preached and the Georgian home where he lived. Soon, I was walking where the founder of Methodism had walked, my head swimming with the eternal significance of this historic base of Methodist operations. It was time to step in and explore this gift of a lifetime. As the doors of this hallowed spot swung shut behind me, time stood still. -

To be a prophet in the footsteps of Ezekiel and following the way of Christ, we must first listen before we speak. And, with eyes fixed on the Holy One, we see God’s fidelity, beauty, and truth. To you, my God, I lift up my eyes, you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold like the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, Like the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so, our eyes look to you, O God, till you have mercy upon us.
