LIST OF APPROVED MODELS OF FRAMES AND FORKS Version on 11.08.2016 The Approval Procedure of bicycle frames and came into force on 1 January 2011 in accordance with Article 1.3.001bis of the UCI Regulations. From this date, all new models of frames and forks used by licence holders in road (RD), time trial (TT), track (TR) and cyclo-cross (CX) events must be approved on the basis of the Approval Protocol for Frames and Forks available from the UCI website. Approval by the UCI certifies that the new equipment meets the shape requirements set out in the UCI regulations. However, this approval does not certify in any case the safety of the equipment which must meet the applicable official quality and safety standards, in accordance with Article 1.3.002 of the UCI regulations. The models which are subject to the approval procedure are: all new models of frames and forks used by licence holders in road, track or cyclo-cross events, all models of frames and forks under development on 1 January 2011 which had not yet reached the production stage (the date of the order form of the moulds is evidence), any changes made to the geometry of existing models after 1 January 2011. Models on the market, at the production stage or already manufactured on 1 January 2011 are not required to be approved during the transition stage. However, the non-approved models have to comply in any case with the UCI technical regulations (Articles 1.3.001 to 1.3.025) and are subjects to the commissaires decision during events. -

The content of this report is specified in the CPSA and the CPSIA. The report describes many of the activities performed to protect the public from hazardous consumer products. Readers may also be interested in the CPSC’s 2011 Performance and Accountability Report, required by the Government Performance and Results Act. All reports are available on the CPSC’s website at: www.cpsc.gov. The CPSC (or the Commission), established by Congress in 1972, is the federal regulatory body tasked with protecting children and families from unreasonable risks of injuries associated with consumer products. In 2010, the Commission launched a comprehensive strategic planning initiative to update its existing strategic plan and help align agency priorities to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. For example, globalization and technological advances have increased the range of products on the market, as well as the challenges involved in overseeing and regulating thousands of product types that can be assembled across multiple countries. -

Weight Reduction Case Study of a Premium Road Bicycle Crank Arm Set by Implementing Beralcast® 310 By: Sean Sullivan Chris Huskamp, IBC Advanced Alloys Date: March 4, 2013 Overview The crank set is the device responsible for converting the bicycle rider’s human power to rotational mechanical power. The crank set travels in a clockwise motion, propelling the bicycle forward. Figure 1 shows the first 180º of a complete crank rotation along with the corresponding torque curve. 180º was chosen because this represents the “power stroke”, the remaining portion of the crank rotation is the “dead stroke.” The dead stroke refers to the fact that no torque is generated by the crank, assuming pedal straps are not used. The two cranks which make up the complete crank set are 180º out of phase which allows for a continuous transfer of torque. As Figure 1 illustrates, the torque increases to a maximum at 90º and begins decreasing until once again reaching zero at 180º. The torque curve assumes that the rider applies a constant pedal force. In reality, the applied force drops off as the rider’s leg extends and the torque curve does not possess perfect symmetry about the 90º point. Therefore, the first 90º are of specific interest when examining the loading conditions. There are three main loading conditions which the crank undergoes: axial torque (torque transmitted to the bicycle’s wheel), side torque (bending the crank arm out, in, or twisting), and combined torque (combination of side and axial torque). The maximums for these conditions are: 0º for side torque, 45º for combined torque, and 90º for axial torque.
