RUSSIAN, SOVIET & POST-SOVIET CONCERTOS A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) Born in Oranienbaum, near St. Petersburg. He began piano, harmony and counterpoint lessons at age 9, and, after a gap of a decade, studied theory with Fyodor Akimenko and Vasily Kalafati and then had private composition lessons with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov over the course of several years. He went on to become one of the greatest composers of the 20th century without ever having been enrolled in any conservatory or receiving any kind of musical degree. His success as a composer began early with the ballets he wrote for Sergei Diaghilev and continued for the rest of his life. He left Russia for Switzerland in 1914, moved on to France in 1920 and then to the United States at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. He composed prolifically throughout his long life and there were hardly any genres of music that he did not tackle. In addition, he committed practically everything he wrote to recordings that he, or his assistant, Robert Craft, conducted personally.
