Bb Clarinet Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was written in 1849. It is the first movement of three pieces written to promote the creative notion of the performer. It allows the performer to be unrestricted with their imagination. Fantasy Piece No. 1 is written to be “Zart und mit Ausdruck” which translates to tenderly and expressively. It begins in the key of A minor to give the audience the sense of melancholy then ends in the key of A major to give resolution and leave the audience looking forward to the next movements. (M. Grant) Tony Lozano . Guitar Tu Lo Sai by Giuseppe Torelli (1650 – 1703) Tu lo sai (You Know It) This musical piece is emotionally fueled. Told from the perspective of someone who has confessed their love for someone only to find that they no longer feel the same way. The piece also ends on a sad note, when they find that they don’t feel the same way. “How much I do love you. Ah, cruel heart how well you know.” (T. Lozano) Ruth Sorenson . Mezzo Soprano Sure on this Shining Night by Samuel Barber Samuel Barber (1910 – 1981) was an American composer known for his choral, orchestral, and opera works. He was also well known for his adaptation of poetry into choral and vocal music. Considered to be one of the composers most famous pieces, “Sure on this shining night,” became one of the most frequently programmed songs in both the United States and Europe.

Graduate College Faculty Representative ii ABSTRACT This doctoral dissertation provides information on how to develop the young dramatic soprano, specifically through more concentrated focus on the breath. Proper breathing is considered the single most important skill a singer will learn, but its methodology continues to mystify multitudes of singers and voice teachers. Voice professionals often write treatises with a chapter or two devoted to breathing, whose explanations are extremely varied, complex or vague. Young dramatic sopranos, whose voices are unwieldy and take longer to develop are at a particular disadvantage for absorbing a solid vocal technique. First, a description, classification and brief history of the young dramatic soprano is discussed along with a retracing of breath methodologies relevant to the young dramatic soprano’s development.

Counter-tenor Damien Guillon releases new Stradella recording with his ensemble Le Banquet Céleste before their UK debut Friday 27 March Friday 22 May CD release (Alpha) St John’s Smith Square Stradella San Giovanni Battista London Festival of Baroque Music Friday 6 March – Saturday 11 April Damien Guillon tours with Masaaki Suzuki & Philippe Herreweghe Brussels, Budapest, Dublin, Düsseldorf, Essen, Gent, Hamburg Katowice, Köln, London, Lucerne, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Paris Counter-tenor Damien Guillon and his French early music ensemble Le Banquet Céleste make their UK debut at St John’s Smith Square as part of the London Festival of Baroque Music on 22 May. Conducted by Damien Guillon, the group’s latest recording – Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista – is released on Alpha on 27 March. As counter- tenor, Guillon tours in the St. John Passion with Masaaki Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan across Europe from 6 – 25 March, and the St. Matthew Passion with Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent from 4 – 11 April. Le Banquet Céleste, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019, has been in residence at the Opéra de Rennes since 2016, and regularly appears at major early music festivals across France and Europe. With in-demand counter-tenor and founder Damien Guillon at its centre, the ensemble focusses particularly on Baroque music for the counter-tenor voice, with works by Dowland, Bach, Frescobaldi, Pergolesi and Caldara forming part of its growing discography of repertoire released on Alpha and Glossa. The group appear at St John’s Smith Square as part of London Festival of Baroque Music on 22 May with a programme of some of Bach’s profoundest Cantatas, including the famous Ich habe genug, BWV 82 performed in its counter-tenor version by Damien Guillon.

Introduction to: Randi Trzesinski and Richard Kitson, The Musical Gazette (1854-1855) Copyright © 2007 RIPM Consortium Ltd Répertoire international de la presse musicale (www.ripm.org) The Musical Gazette (1854-1855) The Musical Gazette [MGA] was published weekly on Saturdays in New York City by the Mason Brothers from 11 November 1854 until 5 May 1855, and comprised twenty-six weekly numbers, the first two containing sixteen pages each, the remainder eight pages each. The issues are numbered from 1 through 26 and the pages are numbered consecutively from 1 through 208. In 1851 Daniel Gregory Mason (1820-1869) and his brother Lowell Mason (1823-1885)—sons of music educator and composer Lowell Mason—united with Henry W. Law to create the Mason & Law publishing firm. Daniel Gregory and Lowell Mason, Junior established in 1853 their own firm, the Mason Brothers, publishers of secular and religious music, school textbooks, histories, English and French dictionaries and music periodicals.1 In 1854 they undertook publication of The Choral Advocate and Singing-Class Journal, and began two new musical periodicals in November of that year, The Musical Gazette (edited by Lowell Mason, Junior) and The Musical Review. After 5 May 1855 MGA was absorbed into another music journal published by the Mason Brothers, The New-York Musical Review and Choral Advocate which was then renamed The New-York Musical Review and Gazette.2 The Mason Brothers’ principal goal for MGA was publication of a journal “devoted to the higher departments of musical literature and criticism; … Musical news from all parts of the world, where music is cultivated, will be promptly and regularly given.”3 Each page of MGA is printed in a two-column format and issues are organized in three main parts.
