While the German language signified intellectual independence and freedom of self-definition (against one‘s roots) for Kertész before the Holocaust, he notes (based on his engagement with fellow writer Jean Améry) that writing in German created severe difficulties in the post-war era. Using the examples of Hilde Spiel and Friedrich Torberg, this article explores this notion and asks how the loss of language experienced by Holocaust survivors impacted on these two Austrian-Jewish writers. The article argues that, while the works of Spiel and Torberg are haunted by the Shoah, the two writers do not write in the post-Auschwitz language that Kertész delineates in his essays, but are instead shaped by the exile experience of both writers. At the same time though, Kertész‘ concept seems to be haunted by exile, as his reception of Jean Améry‘s works, which form the basis of his linguistic genealogies, shows an inability to integrate the experience of exile. -

Adelson Translator’s Introduction Emine Sevgi Özdamar, born in 1946 and raised as what the author herself calls a ‘child of Istanbul’, first attracted widespread attention from German literary critics in 1991 when she was awarded the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann Prize for Literature for her first German novel, which appeared nearly ten years later in English translation as Life is a Caravanserai: Has Two Doors I Came in One I Went Out the Other (this novel has been translated into ten additional languages, including Turkish). Even prior to this dramatic entry on the German literary scene, however, Özdamar was already emerging as a transnational player in postwar German culture in several different ways that would significantly influence the trajectory of her literary career too. One of the so-called guest workers recruited from Turkey in the 1960s to mitigate the labor shortage in divided Germany, Özdamar lived in Berlin as a factory worker from 1965 to 1967. Pursuing a professional acting career upon her return to Istanbul in the late 1960s, she performed key roles in Turkish stagings of German plays by the likes of Bertolt Brecht and Peter Weiss, including the pivotal role of Charlotte Corday in the revolutionary Marat-Sade play that made Weiss internationally famous. After her return to Europe in the 1970s—when Turkish persecution of leftists was especially brutal—Özdamar assisted with theatrical productions by some of the most sought after directors in both the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, including Benno Besson, Matthias Langhoff, Claus Peymann, Franz Xaver Kroetz, and Einar Schleef. -

Eine kleine Geschichte politischer Vereinnah- mungen Steffen Hendel Die gescheiterte deutsche Revolution von 1919 mitsamt ihren Akteur_innen scheint in der gegenwärtigen literarischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Auseinanderset- zung wenn nicht abwesend, so doch marginalisiert. Wenn überhaupt kommen Au- tor_innen, Zeitschriften, einzelne Titel der 1919er nur anlässlich des 100jährigen Ju- biläums der Revolution wieder in den Blick einzelner Forschungsvorhaben und der bildungsbürgerlichen Öffentlichkeit. Der Grund für die relative Abwesenheit der künstlerischen Produkte und Ideen jener Zeit ist fraglos der, dass sie von der heuti- gen Wissenschaft, Bildungprogrammen im weiteren Sinn und dem privaten Lesein- teresse als politisch anachronistisch bewertet werden. Wenn jedoch kritisch festge- stellt wird, 1919er Literatur sei heutigentags erstaunlich wenig präsent, spricht sich auch ein anderer Gedanke aus. Es ist die Idee eines Wirkungszusammenhangs, wo- rüber sich womöglich alle, ungeachtet politischer Gegensätzlichkeiten, sogar einig sind. Demnach erwachse aus der revolutionären, kommunistischen Literatur der 1919er selbst eine notwendige Bedingung oder gar die Potenz zur Verwirklichung ihrer darin vertretenen Inhalte. Der Aufsatz will dabei den Zusammenhang von links-revolutionärer Literaturauffassung, ihrer Ästhetik und der Möglichkeit bzw. Praxis sogar politisch gegenteiliger Interpretation beleuchten. This dissertation explores the musical relationship between these two troubled countries and aims to explain the similarities and differences in their approaches to collective singing. The discussion of the very complex and problematic relationship between the German left and the Soviet government sets the framework for the analysis of music. Beginning in late 1920s, as a result of Stalin’s abandonment of the international revolutionary cause, the divergences between the policies of the Soviet government and utopian aims of the German communist party can be traced in the musical propaganda of both countries. -

Jarausch) Since its creation in 1950 as a subsidiary of the Cultural League, the East German Writers Union embodied a fundamental tension, one that was never resolved during the course of its forty-year existence. The union served two masters – the state and its members – and as such, often found it difficult fulfilling the expectations of both. In this way, the union was an expression of a basic contradiction in the relationship between writers and the state: the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED) demanded ideological compliance, yet these writers also claimed to be critical, engaged intellectuals. This dissertation examines how literary intellectuals and SED cultural officials contested and debated the differing and sometimes contradictory functions of the Writers Union and how each utilized it to shape relationships and identities within the literary community and beyond it. The union was a crucial site for constructing a group image for writers, both in terms of external characteristics (values and goals for participation in wider society) and internal characteristics (norms and acceptable behavioral patterns guiding interactions with other union members).
