The Experience of the Working Class in the German Revolution of November 1918 3 Introduction 1. Prelude: A Chat with an Old Comrade at the Cemetery It was a cold, windy, January day in Berlin. My father and I departed the U-Bahn station and walked, a long, lonely walk alongside the train tracks, past subsidized gardening plots owned by Berlin residents, not sure if we were headed in the correct direction. Then, we saw a sign— "Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten 700m”—and felt a little relieved. Perhaps the journey through the harsh wind in this less than stellar looking area of Berlin will have been worth it, we thought. We eventually made our way to the gate to the cemetery and around the bends in the path to our destination, the Memorial of Socialists. The place was deserted. A bleak, large stone with the words “DIE TOTEN MAHNEN UNS” (“The Dead Remind Us”) stood amidst some greenery, with graves wrapping around it in a circle. There lay the graves of the Germany’s most famous socialists and communists: Karl Liebknecht, Rosa Luxemburg, Ernst Thälmann, Wilhelm Pieck, Walter Ulbricht, Franz Mehring, and others. On most of these graves were many red roses, especially Rosa’s, which was covered with them. In a broader, concentric circle, further out from this one—Die Ringmauer—lay more graves along a brick wall, forerunners and other famous radicals: Wilhelm Liebknecht, Hugo Hasse, Paul Singer, Luise Zeits, Carl Legien, and more. Symbols of peace, the triumph of reason, and brotherhood adorned many of the graves and tombstones, some more complex, some simple. I explained to father who some of these people were. It was strange to be so near the embodied presence of what for many months had been only names in books and texts online that I had been rigorously studying. There lay people to whose lives I had given, and still am giving, a considerable amount of my own life researching. The Experience of the Working Class in the German Revolution of November 1918 4 As we stood their pensively, taking in the remains of German socialism, an old man, accompanied by what was probably a college age man and woman, approached the Ringmauer and began to go around the graves. At each, they stopped, the old man explaining in quiet German to them who they were standing over. Eventually, I worked up the courage to go and ask him what his connection to this place was, to spark up a conversation with him. If nothing else, it would be an excellent opportunity to practice German speaking skills (skills I had since coming to Berlin discovered were not so good). Hesitantly, I asked him if he was a historian or a professor—a question I do not recall him ever really answering—for once I started speaking, I became a little nervous and did not stop, explaining to him in broken German that I was a history student researching the German Revolution of 1918 and 1919, that I was interested in the experience of the working class, that the old man keeping his distance as his son made a scene was my father, that we were from America, from Illinois, that no, we were not from Chicago….The old man patiently listened, and then explained to me in half-English, half-German, that he was here with his grandchildren touring the cemetery. I asked if he could tell me about the people here—we were then standing over the grave of Wilhelm Liebknecht. He proceeded to describe to me and his grandchildren the symbolism of the grave, the man and woman in Roman dress, the wreath, the glorious imagery of the progress of human kind, peace, and enlightenment. Though he knew the English word “wreath,” his thick German accent caused him to pronounce it “wreet,” causing amongst us all much confusion for some time as he tried to explain the word to me by spelling it, first spelling it wrong. The more he talked, I grew bolder. I asked him if he was from Berlin, and he said he was, gesturing that he had been born just over there in Treptower Park. I told him how fascinated I was The Experience of the Working Class in the German Revolution of November 1918 5 by the city’s history between East and West, the divide, and how it was memorialized in different ways across town. The man then asked me if we had been to the DDR Museum (the East German History Museum) which we had been to just the previous day. What did I think of it, he wanted to know. Again, hesitating, I slowly explained that, while I liked the items on display and admired the research that had gone into the museum, I thought that the presentation was a little much. I pointed out how in the sets of East German apartment buildings that the windows showed only gray, cloudy skies, that the emphasized over and over again how there was not a variety of consumer goods, how they seemed to make farce out of a way of life for millions of people. The old man smiled, held out his hands for emphasis, and said in his weak, shaky voice: “It’s propaganda!” I laughed and agreed.

    The Spartacus Revolt January 1919 The war was over, Kaiser Wilhelm had fled and revolutionaries were roaming the streets. The people of Germany now had to decide what kind of Republic the new Germany would be. Would Germany become a peaceful law-abiding democracy like Britain, with power shared between the upper, middle and working classes? Or would a violent revolution sweep away the past and create a communist country completely dominated by the workers? What were the options? The Social Democrats, led by Ebert, wanted Germany to become a law-abiding parliamentary democracy like Britain, where every German - rich or poor - would be entitled to a say in how the country was run, by voting in elections for a parliament (Reichstag) which would make the laws. The Spartacus League - (Spartacists aka communists) - on the other hand wanted Germany to become a communist country run by, and for, the workers; they wanted power and wealth to be taken away from the old ruling elite in a violent revolution and for Germany to then be run by Workers Councils - or Soviets. The Spartacists wanted a new kind of political system - communism, a system where the country would be run for and on behalf of the workers, with all wealth and power being removed from the previous rulers. He wanted to make sure that the people of Germany understood what the Social Democrats would give them if they were in charge of Germany.

    Kiel before the revolution 1918 In order to understand, how the revolution came about to happen, one has to look at the previous situation of the city. In 1918, Kiel used to be an Imperial War Harbour. At that time 70.000 workers of about 100.000 working people were employed in the industrial sector, which is why the resident unions were constantly gaining political influence. In June 1916, there had already been first political unrest and owing to insufficient supplies there were several protests in March 1917. This unstable state was decisive for the beginning of the revolution in November 1918. The sailors’ resistance The sailors, especially those from the third squadron, were an essential factor for the revolution. In Wilhelmshaven a tense atmosphere prevailed as well, which led to a mutiny of the deep-sea fleet in August 1917. As this mutiny was caused only by the first and the third squadron, it was decided to separate these two units. The ships of the third squadron, under vice admiral Hugo Kraft, were supposed to return to their home port Kiel, where they granted the sailors a shore leave [in order to defuse the situation]. Several sailors from the ship “Markgraf”, who were regarded as the ringleaders of the mutiny in Wilhelmshaven, were arrested in the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal [now known as the Kiel Canal]. This aggravated the conflict even further. The final trigger was the plan of the German Navy´s highest command to send the fleet into a hopeless decisive battle, a last honourable fight. [This contradicted political instructions.] However, the sailors had already heard about it in the night of 29 October 1918 to 30 October 1918, which led to a mutiny.

    Lindenstraße 2-4 Vorderansicht der SPD-Parteizentrale zur Zeit der Weimarer Republik. Parteizentrale der SPD bis 1933. Lindenstraße 2-4. Von hier bis zum Mehringplatz und zur Alten Jakobstraße erstreckte sich früher ein großer Gewerbekomplex mit zehn Höfen. Bis zum Verbot 1933 hatten dort der Parteivorstand der SPD, die Parteischule, das Parteiarchiv sowie Verlag, Buch- handlung und Druckerei des Parteiorgans Vorwärts ihren Sitz. Die von dem Architekten Curt Berndt 1902/04 errichte- ten Gebäude wurden nach schweren Kriegsbeschädigungen 1962 abgerissen. Der historische Standort Lindenstraße 2-4 ist wegen der Veränderung des Straßenverlaufs der Linden- straße heute nicht mehr erkennbar. Die 1875 aus dem Allgemeinen Deutschen Arbeiterver- ein (ADAV) und der Sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands hervorgegangene Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Der Plan zeigt den historischen Standort. Das im Zweiten Weltkrieg Deutschlands gab sich auf dem Parteitag in Halle 1890 den stark zerstörte Viertel wurde in den 1970er Jahren neu bebaut. Namen Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands. Nach Aus- laufen der Sozialistengesetze (1878 bis 1890) konnte sie ab Ende 1890 wieder öffentlich auftreten. Neben der SPD-Reichstags- fraktion, deren Überleben das liberale Reichstagswahlrecht dern sowie durch Zuschüsse der sozialdemokratischen Ge- gesichert hatte, sollte die schnell wachsende Partei in Berlin, werkschaften und durch drei wohlhabende SPD-Mitglieder, der Hauptstadt des Deutschen Reiches, ein politisches Zen- darunter der Parteivorsitzende Paul Singer.     Proletarian Myth and Political Mobilization: The ‘Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse’ (Working-Class Combat Groups) in the GDR 1953–1989/90* Tilmann Siebeneichner Georg-August-Universität Göttingen ABSTRACT Political myths played a crucial role in the legitimation process of the German Democratic Republic. The ‘Kampfgruppen der Ar- beiterklasse’ – Combat Groups for short – created after the June- Uprising in 1953 were meant to materialise the myth of a united and pugnacious proletariat which would stand up to defend its ‘so- cialist achievements’ (‘sozialistische Errungenschaften’). On- going social ties at the grass-roots level proved as relevant for the support of the Combat Groups as local traditions. This points to invidual ‘spaces of experience’ (‘Erfahrungsräume’) which were crucial for ‘eigen-sinnige’ or ‘stubborn’ interest adoptions of the message of the Proletarian Myth. An analysis of the Combat Groups in this perspective thus promises information on the com- munication of a specific view on the political reality in ‘real exist- ing Socialism’, as well as it illustrates how people at the grass- roots level adopted structures of power for themselves. Jarausch) Since its creation in 1950 as a subsidiary of the Cultural League, the East German Writers Union embodied a fundamental tension, one that was never resolved during the course of its forty-year existence. The union served two masters – the state and its members – and as such, often found it difficult fulfilling the expectations of both. In this way, the union was an expression of a basic contradiction in the relationship between writers and the state: the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED) demanded ideological compliance, yet these writers also claimed to be critical, engaged intellectuals. This dissertation examines how literary intellectuals and SED cultural officials contested and debated the differing and sometimes contradictory functions of the Writers Union and how each utilized it to shape relationships and identities within the literary community and beyond it. The union was a crucial site for constructing a group image for writers, both in terms of external characteristics (values and goals for participation in wider society) and internal characteristics (norms and acceptable behavioral patterns guiding interactions with other union members).

    Forum 123 Ottokar Luban Ottokar Luban Rosi Wolfsteins antimilitaristische Rosi Wolfsteins antimilitaristische Aktivitäten 1916/17: Aktivitäten 1916/17 Neue Quellenfunde Rosalie – genannt Rosi – Wolfstein (später Rose Frölich) wurde am 27. Mai 1888 in einer jüdischen Kaufmannsfamilie mit vier Kindern in Witten/Ruhr geboren. Nach Eintritt in die SPD 1908 führte Rosi Wolfsteins politisches Engagement dazu, dass sie für den Lehrgang 1912/13 an der zentralen Parteischule in Berlin ausgewählt wurde. Hier war Rosa Luxemburg eine sie stark beeindruckende Dozentin, mit der sie wie auch andere Lehrgangsteil - nehmer(innen) privat in Kontakt kam, der über die folgenden Jahre fortgesetzt wurde. Wäh- rend des Weltkrieges arbeitete Wolfstein auf dem linken Flügel der Arbeiterjugend wie der sozialdemokratischen Partei mit großem Engagement mit, war als regionale Leiterin der Opposition in der Arbeiterjugend und als Vertrauensperson der Spartakusgruppe in Duis- burg tätig, wo sie als Angestellte im Konsumverein beschäftigt war. Wegen ihrer illegalen Friedensaktivitäten war sie im Ersten Weltkrieg mehrfach inhaftiert.
