Heavy-hitting task forces were assembled to tackle racial inequality amid a wave of national protests against police brutality, while music’s biggest companies committed hundreds of millions of dollars to the cause. Artists and their managers, agents and promoters — many of whom saw their income plummet in the pandemic — were forced to reinvent their businesses as they sought relief from organizations fighting to help the live industry survive. Through it all, music professionals marched in the streets, encouraged people to vote in a historic election, brainstormed solutions on virtual panels and mourned the loss of family, friends and music legends to COVID-19. In other words, it didn’t feel much like a year for congratulating music’s most powerful people on how powerful they still are. When the siren blasts across this village these local hero’s drop what they are doing, leave the family or workplace behind and answer the call to help. This is why we find it so inspiring that on Saturday May 11 four members of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade will be giving even more by racing up the 1103 stairs of the Auckland Sky Tower in full kit and breathing apparatus to help raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. This is the fourth year that brigade members have joined this gut busting event which has become a phenomenally popular challenge for fulltime and volunteer fire fighters from all over the country. Fifty one flights of stairs with nearly 25kg of extra weight, makes the finish area on the Sky Tower viewing platform look like a casualty clearing station. And to show the dedication New Zealand fire fighters have to this cause, when entries opened online in February, it took less than an hour to fill the nearly five hundred places available. Glen Walker, Paul McCulla, Kevin Hurl and Craig Smith have all been training on steps and steep streets around Lyttelton. Competition in three different age groups is intense, but the fire fighters never lose sight of the main goal which is to raise as much as possible for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Deirdre: My name is Deirdre Dawson. I’m the managing director of Disruptiv Limited. We’re New Zealand’s only four element hip hop company. We specialize in graffiti art and we have this gallery here on K Road. We also manage the Disruptiv All-star Breakers which are some of New Zealand’s most talented break dancers. We’ve got MC:s and DJ:s and we also publish a magazine, Disrupt Magazine, which is distributed all around the world.
