By Ryan Mac and Craig Silverman Posted on July 23, 2020, at 11:37 a.m. ET On July 1, Max Wang, a Boston-based software engineer who was leaving Facebook after more than seven years, shared a video on the company’s internal discussion board that was meant to serve as a warning. “I think Facebook is hurting people at scale,” he wrote in a note accompanying the video. “If you think so too, maybe give this a watch.” Most employees on their way out of the “Mark Zuckerberg production” typically post photos of their company badges along with farewell notes thanking their colleagues. Wang opted for a clip of himself speaking directly to the camera. What followed was a 24-minute clear-eyed hammering of Facebook’s leadership and decision-making over the previous year. The video was a distillation of months of internal strife, protest, and departures that followed the company’s decision to leave untouched a post from President Donald Trump that seemingly called for violence against people protesting the police killing of George Floyd. And while Wang’s message wasn’t necessarily unique, his assessment of the company’s ongoing failure to protect its users — an evaluation informed by his lengthy tenure at the company — provided one of the most stunningly pointed rebukes of Facebook to date. -

Storyline Gathering - 03.07.21 CONNECTIONS Jill McNabnay I love the TV show, The Big Bang Theory, because it’s full of geeky, nerdy, science humor, which I’m all about. But the whole show is really about these four guys who are so brilliant in their jobs, but so dumb in real life. They have no clue how to form relationships with others. And just I’m fascinated by their quest for connection because that’s something I see every day – ALL day - as a high school teacher. Young people may not be aware of it, but from the outside looking in, it doesn’t take long to see that a huge percentage of their life is dedicated to finding, impressing, and keeping their group of friends. This looks different depending on their age, but it is still there all the time. I teach freshmen and seniors, so I see them at the beginning and end of their high school career, and one of the biggest differences between them, besides their maturity level, is that most freshmen don’t know where they belong or how they fit in, so a lot of their time, effort, and mental energy is consumed with trying to figure that out, and at times making pretty clumsy attempts to fit in and impress their classmates. But by the time they’re seniors, kids have settled into their niche, they’ve found a group, club or team where they feel like they belong…the more flamboyant quest for friendship may be over, but the passion connected to connecting with others clearly remains. -

Law School Student Scholarship. 1019. https://scholarship.shu.edu/student_scholarship/1019 ABSTRACT Despite improvements in female visibility and a number of movements pushing for equality in recent years, gender imbalance continues to plague the world of entertainment. While strides have been made to achieve parity in the film industry, little progress has been made to achieve the same in music where the disproportionality of females is even worse. Females are chronically underrepresented across virtually all aspects of music, both on-stage and off-stage, whether it be as musicians or as executives, which subsequently effects the amount of nominations, as well as awards that females in music receive. The implementation of inclusion riders in Hollywood has demonstrably improved female representation in popular films, but until now inclusion riders have not been applied to the music industry. This paper explores the application of inclusion riders to the music industry in order to remedy a long-standing history of female exclusion, as well as increase visibility for the vast number of talented females in the music industry that deserve the same opportunities and recognition, but until now have remained invisible. -
