DENISE GREEN A Rose Is A Rose (Wonder), 2011, acrylic on canvas, 47 x 138 inches Australian-American painter Denise Green trained at New York City’s Hunter College in the 1970s with Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell. The influence of her teachers is evident in her use of color fields filled with recurrent motifs. Green combines Indian and Aboriginal philosophy with modernist technique, composing deeply personal works. Disembodied objects such as cut roses, fan-like shapes, and stone fragments hover in the center of her mixed-media paintings and works on paper. Yet the objects are not meant to be read literally. They are extensions of the artist’s inner world, alluding to her experiences with loss and grief. Green has been studying the concept of metonymy, which she describes as the fusion of the inner spiritual and outer material world, as it is posited by Aboriginal culture in her native Australia. Green was awarded the Order of Australia in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe and Australia, and it is in public collections including those of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Albertina Museum, Vienna; and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Disembodied objects such as cut roses, fan-like shapes and stone fragments hover in the center of her mixed-media paintings and works on paper. Yet, the objects are not to be read literally, nor do they bear specific meaning. Rather they are derived from a bank of personal and cultural imagery. The images are a direct extension of the artist’s inner world and allude to her experiences with loss, grief and the transience of life. The selection of works in this exhibition are informed by the linguistic term metonymy. Green explains: “Metonymic thinking implies for me the fusion of an inner spiritual and an outer material world. When an artist creates metonymically the artwork is seamless.” In a metonymic framework, a sign or symbol does not have one single meaning, rather it has a more fluid, holistic meaning. There is a breakdown of dualities, such as spirit and matter, conscious and unconscious, or past and future.

Denise Green Takes Simple Things and Explores Their Weight, Finding Density As Well As Possibility in Their Combination and Repetition
D ENISE GREEN R OSES, STEMS, THORNS R OSES, STEMS, THORNS A rose, a grid, a curving line: Denise Green takes simple things and explores their weight, finding density as well as possibility in their combination and repetition. After forty years of painting, she returns again and again to the expressive possibilities of paint, developing a repertoire of marks—a language, if you will—that, while specifically hers, remains meaningful to others. Green typically isolates objects against radically reduced backgrounds, seeking not to describe them so much as mine their archetypal resonance. This was the procedure she used for work included in the Whitney Museum’s generation-defining exhibition New Image Painting in 1978 and its legacy continues. In order to create work capable of encapsulating emotional states, Green aims for the essential ideas of the object rather than its painted description. Green explored this subject at length in her 2005 book, Metonymy in Contemporary Art, where she combined art- critical and philosophical approaches from European and non-Western traditions in an effort to understand painting as a fusion of inner states and outer form. Asked about the inspiration for the works on display here she admits that many are “accessing ugly feelings”, feelings signaled cryptically in titles, a few of which suggest family drama, the oldest kind there is. Whatever the personal or emotional sources for these works Green acknowledges only that she feels flustered when called to speak about them. Hence these paintings and works on paper, visual statements, as she has called them, inviting a visual response.
