Available by telephone at 1.888.438.5200 9 Concert Presentations during the Innovation Series at Ironworks DÁLAVA June 23 Innovation Series – The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In Led by vocalist Julia Úlehla and guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed, , Diana Krall), the “utterly captivating” (Vancouver Sun) Dálava takes Czech folk melodies transcribed over 100 years ago by Úlehla’s botanist/ethnomusicologist great-grandfather, Dr. Vladimir Úlehla, and places them in a compelling contemporary context. Cinematic and wide- ranging, the music of Dálava is beautifully rendered and hauntingly expressive. With Peggy Lee cello, Colin Cowan bass, Tyson Naylor keys, and Dylan van der Schyffdrums , the groundbreaking Dálava offers a “stunning fusion of Middle European melody, rock energy, and scratchy avant-jazz textures” (Georgia Straight). DONNY MCCASLIN GROUP June 24 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30 pm $40 All In Three-time GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist/composer Donny McCaslin’s group collaborated on ’s masterful final album,Blackstar , matching its rugged, versatile, and “relentlessly intriguing” (NME) sound to Bowie’s immense artistry, generosity of spirit, and outright fearlessness. McCaslin’s “powerful left-field New York jazz band” (The Guardian) features on keys, bassist Nate Wood, and , “a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed” (New York Times). The repertoire is deep and expansive; moving from Bowie, to Deadmau5, to the Chainsmokers, to compelling, cutting-edge McCaslin originals, “Bowie’s Last Band” takes genre-defying inspiration from the master’s uncompromising musical vision. NICK FRASER TRIO WITH AND June 25 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30 pm $30 All In “If one of the major compositional decisions for an improviser is choosing your partners, then Canadian drummer Nick Fraser shows himself to be a master of the form.” —New York City Jazz Record. The JUNO Award-winning Torontonian’s compositions and group improvisations are intense journeys into the unknown, “moving synchronously from delicate opening figures through a coordinated tumult of sound” (Wholenote). PERCH HEN BROCK & RAIN June 26 Innovation Series -The Ironworks @ 9:30 pm $30 All In Perch Hen Brock & Rain is a unique combination of two long-time creative duos. Dutch trailblazers Ab Baars (Ken Vandermark) tenor sax/clarinet/shakuhachi and Ig Henneman (Misha Mengelberg) viola, and dynamic New York all-stars () tenor & soprano sax and () drums “converse in a most engaging way, exchanging ideas, lines flowing back and forth throughout… This is a most extraordinary quartet, and one of the finest improvising units of the year” Downtown( Music Gallery). NAKED WOLF June 27 Innovation Series- The Ironworks @ 9:30 pm $30 All In Knotty, angular rock rhythms meet scorching free improv in this ecstatic sonic powerhouse. Amsterdam-based multi-national quintet Naked Wolf is known for delivering “infectious, demonic sets charged with wild, hypnotic rock energy and clever improvisations with rapid changes in mood and pulse” (AllAboutJazz). With the gritty acoustic bass guitar of (formerly of Dutch avant/punk band The Ex), the twisted melodies and textures of Felicity Provan cornet/vocals, Yedo Gibson reeds, and Mikael Szafirowskielectric guitar/vocals, and the thundering drums of Gerri Jäger, Luc Ex Naked Wolf balances unpredictable expressive outbursts with moments of compact unison blasting, head-bobbing riffs, and fragile lyricism. SATOKO FUJII & KAZE June 28 Innovation Series- The Ironworks @ 9:30 pm $30 All In “If you think you can imagine what piano, drums, and two trumpets will sound like, think again.” KPFA Radio Melodic beauty, provocative abstraction, and confrontational fire: KAZE is free jazz at its most creative and powerful. The Japanese/French quartet shares boundless energy and enthusiasm, an insatiable appetite for sonic experimentation, and the disciplined intelligence of accomplished spontaneous composers. With three acclaimed albums under their belt, KAZE is in full flight. This is “bold, uncompromising music” (London Jazz News) featuring pianist Satoko Fujii, the trumpet tandem of France’s Christian Pruvost and Japan’s Natsuki Tamura, and French drummer Peter Orins. CLAUDIA QUINTET June 29 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In For over 20 years in their longstanding, preternaturally attuned lineup, Claudia Quintet has bridged modern jazz, chamber, and new music in consistently inventive ways. Drummer/bandleader John Hollenbeck’s compositions are full of clarity, nuance, and space. But the sound of Claudia Quintet is equally about Hollenbeck’s compositional choices as the astounding chemistry of his virtuosic ensemble. “He ‘gets’ each member, and they, him” (AllAboutJazz). Exploratory and engaging, the group features some of jazz’s foremost innovators, including (John Abercrombie, Ravi Coltrane) bass, Matt Moran (, Nate Wooley) vibraphone, Red Wierenga (Brad Lubman) accordion, and Chris Speed (Endangered Blood, AlasNoAxis) clarinet/tenor saxophone. CAT TOREN'S HUMAN KIND June 30 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In Vancouver-born, Brooklyn-based JUNO Award-winning pianist/composer Cat Toren’s Human Kind is a dynamic new project influenced by the free-form, socially conscious jazz of the late ‘60s as well as today’s resurgent civil rights movement. “Beautiful and adventurous” (CBC Radio), Human Kind channels Alice Coltrane and her contemporaries, making a powerful case for the expressive art of jazz’s ability to uplift, engage, and unite people. With local heavy- hitters Dave Say saxophone, Gordon Grdina oud/guitar, Tommy Babin bass, and Dan Gaucher drums, the empathic Toren uses bold atmospheric abstraction and fluid melodies to mix deep human warmth with creative fire!

BassDrumBone July 2 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this collective trio brings together the transcendent talents of jazz masters Mark Helias (Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman) bass, (George Lewis, ) drums, and (, ) trombone. “A veritable jazz super-group” with “strikingly intuitive sensibilities” (AllAboutJazz), BassDrumBone manages to somehow be greater than the sum of its impressive parts. With telepathic improvisational rapport, indomitable creative spark, and supreme musicianship, these three strong personalities have spent four decades setting the gold standard for innovative small-group interplay before exceeding it in new and surprising ways.
