Fredy Studer Evolving Processes by Ken Micallef ollowing in the lineage of European drumming masters Pierre Favre and Han Bennink, Swiss-born Fredy Studer has deftly employed Ftouch, tone, texture, noise, and rhythm in service of highly drum- centric music that, regardless of its avant-garde nature, communicates a rare sense of sincerity and humanity. Active on the European avant-jazz and classical scenes since the late 1960s, Studer was a founding member of the influe tial, freewheeling fusion group OM, and has toured and tracked albums with such iconic musicians as Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Joe Henderson, Rainer Brüninghaus, Markus Stockhausen, Charlie Mariano, George Gruntz, Franco Ambrosetti, and Christy Doran. Along the way, he’s ceaselessly explored out-rock, jazz, folk, psychedelia, blues, fusion, rhythm ’n’ blues, bebop, funk, contemporary classical, and open-improvisation terrain. Among the dozens of albums Studer has recorded are the landmark 1977 ECM release Percussion Profiles with Jack DeJohnette, Dom Um Romão, Pierre Favre, Dave Friedman, and George Gruntz, and Favre’s 1984 release Singing Drums, featuring Paul Motian and Naná Vasconcelos, both of which expanded the then-current rhythmic consciousness. Other projects featuring Studer and Favre are the Four in Time drum quartet, with Daniel Humair and Fritz Hauser, and the long-running Drum Orchestra duo. Along the way Studer has also interpreted the percussive masterworks of 20th-century classical composers Steve Reich, John Cage, and Edgard Varèse. Coinciding with his long-term consultancy with Paiste cymbals, Studer followed his own artistic muse, exploring unusual situations and challenging concepts in music, life, and drumming. -

Un’esplorazione della chitarra acustica in cui confluiscono echi di geografie diverse, in cui la definizione dei confini sonori si sposta sempre di più verso terreni di vivida immaginazione. NJ), Registration is limited to 5 students. Cost is $300.00 Level required: A technical command of the instrument, notation reading ability, experience playing in various musical ensembles and musical situations and an open mind. Ideal for late high school or early college age players who are committed to pursuing music professionally or who are or will be pursuing jazz music studies on a college or post graduate level. Some of the central topics will include: Understanding Groove and Feel, an investigation into how to develop your own relaxed, swinging, propelling groove in Straight Ahead, Afro Cuban, African, Brazilian, R & B and Blues styles. Learning from the Masters, each day, with listening and guided analysis, we will investigate several past and present masters and understand their innovations and unique approaches to jazz drumming and improvisation. Understanding Form as an Accompanist and Soloist, through listening and analysis, we will learn to recognize the structure of the music we are performing. We also learn techniques for improvising within a form. Drum Soloing, learning how to develop musically expressive solos which are not a collection of licks or a display of technical ability but instead are coherent musical statements, which keep the listener engaged. Ensemble Drumming, each day will include everyone playing together in a structured and open form way. Emphasis will be on listening and interacting. Rhythmic and coloristic structures will be explored. -

What glorious, high-spirited, sensual sounds they make, on an instrument that is fiendishly difficult to master. Such trombone legends as J.J. Johnson, J.C. Higginbotham, Jack Teagarden, Vic Dickenson, “Tricky” Sam Nanton, Dickie Wells and Frank Rosolino have brought to jazz a daunting range of expression, creating moods and telling stories with the most deeply personal voices. Among contemporary players, no one has carried on that tradition more winningly or inventively than Ray Anderson. For more than three decades, in an astonishing range of styles and settings, he has conjured sounds that move and delight, adding new wrinkles to jazz expression even as he celebrates jazz tradition. The trombonist has gracefully bridged swing and bop and free jazz, blues and gospel and New Orleans funk. “I feel like a spiritual son of that city,” he says. Described by pre-eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins as “one of the most compellingly original trombonists,” and by the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD as “the most exciting slide brass player of his generation," Anderson is by turns a supremely lyrical player and footloose innovator, a bold texturalist and polished nostalgist. He is one of Europe’s leading bass players since the early 1970-ties and is a key figure of the Nordic Jazz Scene. Starting out as a member of Jan Garbarek’s Quartet together with Terje Rypdal and Jon Christensen, he soon played in the local rhythm section in Oslo for visiting American musicians. Andersen worked with Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Don Cherry, Paul Bley, George Russell, Sam Rivers, Chick Corea, John Abercrombie, Pat Metheney or John Scofield. He has recorded 21 albums in his own name for ECM-Records. In Composition #32, for example, “Giant dark chords are stacked together in an abyss of darkness” (CN-B 375); Composition #75 will take you “’from one room to the next’—as if in a hall of mirrors (‘with lights in the mirrors’)” (CN-D 118); in Composition #77D slap tongue dynamics “can be viewed [as] sound ‘sparks’ that dance ‘in the wind’ of the music” (189); enter the “universe” of Composition #101 and you’ll discover “a field of tall long trees (of glass)” (CN-E 142).1 While it is not unusual for composers to employ visual images when discussing their work, Braxton’s descriptions are clearly not illustrative in the sense of, say, Vivaldi’s poems for La Quattro Stagioni or Ellington’s droll explanations of his song titles. Rather than describe scenes that the music supposedly evokes, Braxton appears instead to offer extremely personal visualisations of the musical events and processes that are taking place in his compositions. Further evidence of this highly individual perspective can be found throughout his work. -
