A Strong Start Makes a Difference A Strong Start Makes a Difference Teachers & Parents share powerful stories about the importance of high quality early learning. About the Campaign The Strong Start for Children - Building America’s Future Campaign is an ever-expanding, diverse effort of national, state, and local groups united in support of increased federal early childhood investments and the President’s Preschool Proposal, which would expand access to high-quality early learning opportunities for low-and moderate-income children and families. The Campaign has three goals: increase public awareness about the importance of the early years to a child’s success in school and in life, build support among public officials for greater investments in early learning, and expand the voices of support for young children and their families. Lots of people are talking about it and we wanted to hear from the educators and parents who regularly witness the powerful effects of high-quality early learning. We asked individuals across the country to tell us about their experiences and what early learning has meant to the children in their lives. In this book you’ll find firsthand stories from preschool teachers, early-care providers, home visitors, parents, elementary-school teachers, and business leaders from across the country. Every day many of these individuals are on the ground working with children. They are the best eye witnesses to the results of high-quality early learning, and their stories show how an excellent early learning experience can unlock a child’s potential. Unfortunately hundreds of thousands of American children do not get to experience high-quality early learning. To change that harsh reality, a plan has been proposed to help children get a strong start. This historic plan will make high-quality prekindergarten available for low- and moderate-income 4-year-olds, increase the availability of high-quality child care options for infants and toddlers through partnerships between Early Head Start and child care, and expand voluntary home visiting. This is a bold step toward ensuring that all of our children succeed in school and in life. These stories will show you just how much high-quality early learning can accomplish for children and families. We look forward to working with you and your colleagues to expand access to these opportunities for America’s most vulnerable children. Norah (20s) sits in a chair with the headphones on and waits. After a moment Ellen (late 30s) enters. It is 1942. Ellen: Anything? Norah: No. Did you forget my cup of tea? Ellen: Joan is making it. She’ll be up in a minute. Norah: Where is she? Ellen: In the garden. Norah: What were the odds of us getting the only non-smoking flat in all of Haddington Road do you think? Ellen: You should both give up anyway. Smoking is bad for you. Norah: Says who? Ellen: Doctors. Norah: Would you go on. My doctor smokes. As does my dentist. Ellen: They do not. Norah: They practically eat the things. Particularly the dentist. 2 Ellen laughs wryly. Norah: All this chat about smoking makes me want one now. Ellen: Go on. I’ll keep an eye on things. Norah leaps up, grabs her bag and exits. Ellen walks over to the radio and lowers the volume. She then moves over to the listening device, picks up the headphones and starts to flick through a notebook that is on the table.

    This book is dedicated to all the young people who must meld and merge, synthesize and harmonize, to create family fusion. CHAPTER 1 PLUNK. Plink. Ripple. Rumble. Tinkle. Twinkle. Boomble. I know that’s not an actual word, but it’s a real sound. I can create any musical combination of sounds on my piano. That’s my superpower. I sit, hands perched with thirsty fingers, as I get ready to play. I work hard at it, always trying to find the right melodies and harmonies. The upstairs-downstairs scales that rise and fall. The three- and four-finger chords that stomp. The fingernail-delicate tiptoeing up and down the keyboard, each touch a new sound. White keys. Black keys. One at a time. Chords all together. Two keys make a different sound than three played together. Four or five mashed at the same time is even better. I can do nine keys, even ten, to make a chord, but to be honest, that sounds weird. Each combination at the piano is different. Bass. Treble. Major tones. Minor wails. Bass like a celebration. Treble like tears. Five-four-three-two-one. One-two-three-four-five. Up. Up. Up. Down. Down. Down. Harmony. Melody. Chords. Scales. The black keys play sad sounds, like somebody crying. The white keys sometimes laugh. Using only my fingers, I can make the black and white keys dance together and do whatever I want. When I play the piano, I rock! It would be nice if the rest of my life came together like some kind of a magical musical symphony.
