6 Shawnee State Men’s Soccer Outlook The 2011 season is shaping up to be one of the best in school history for the Shawnee State Men’s Soccer team. To compete in one of the NAIA’s most elite soccer confer- ences, the Mid-South Conference, the Bears will need to step up their game and will rely heavily on senior leadership to propel the Bears’ to their best season in school his- tory.

The Bears’ 2011 roster boasts 29 players including 9 of its 11 starter from last sea- son’s 8-10 squad. The roster includes 19 returning letterman and 10 freshman. Five seniors, all starters, return for the final season and hope to make their final season special.

Offensively, Shawnee State returns 59% of its offense from last year. Leading the Bears’ offense this season will be junior forward Chad Johnston. Johnston, was se- cond on the team last season with six goals and led the Bears with six assists. He was named Honorable Mention All-MSC. Others returning to the forward position are sophomores Braden Ruth and Kyle Brooks. Midfielders returning are junior Michael Meadows, sophomores Yves Nzwanga and Jacob Hackworth. Meadows started in all but two games for the Bears last season and scored three goals and tallied two as- sists.

Defensively, the Bears return three honorable mention all-conference honors. Direct- ing the defense on the field are seniors and four-year starters Cody Bond, Dale Vinson and Lenier Crawford. Other defensive personnel helping the Bears this season is sen- ior Josh Hartman and junior honorable mention honoree Ryan Beatty.

Senior and honorable mention all-conference goalkeeper Kevin Fischer will get the nod in goal for the Bears. Last season Kevin played in 13 games, posted a 6-6 overall record with 91 saves. He will contend with sophomore Jordan Cross and freshman Zach Miller.

Shawnee State opens the season on Saturday, August 27 against Bluefield. The Bears’ face five non-conference opponents before opening conference play at the Uni- versity of the Cumberlands on September 17. Shawnee State second half of the sea- son boasts tough competition. In conference action the Bears face Lindsey Wilson on October 8 and Rio Grande on October 19. The two teams have won nine NAIA Na- tional Championships, including Lindsey Wilson taking home the title in 2009. Shaw- nee State also faces NCAA Division I Marshall University in a non-conference battle on October 12.

Shawnee State Men’s Soccer Mid-South Conference

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., formed the Mid-South Conference to serve as the competitive base for their entire sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institu- tions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and women, offering championships in 15 sports.

The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly over- sees the conference and the office of the commissioner. This administrative "hands on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.

True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the opportunities for athletic competition among their students.

30 Shawnee State Men’s Soccer NAIA

About the NAIA The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa- tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men's sports pro- gram would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources cur- rently allocated to the women's sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde- pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive dif- ference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the lat- est cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student- athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
