Sampsons, and Wrights Preface In writing this book I have attempted to accomplish two things. One of these, of course, is to give future generations of often frustrated descendants of these families a chance to gain valuable information all from one source. However, this book attempts to accomplish more than that. In any genealogical record one finds names, dates, and locations of births and deaths, but seldom does he or she get to glimpse into the lives of those people who have long since passed into the realm of eternity. I have been fortunate to know many people in my life who were able to provide such information through the memories of those gone that they were willing to share with me. Now I can share with you those voices of ancestors that seem to call from the corridors of every descendant's heart. Footsteps through a bed of stone As lightly I do creep. The voices of a distant time Seem to beacon - "Find me!" The past unfolds before me Like pages from a book. I hear their cries from somewhere, The corridors of my heart. Like an archaeologist But searching through granite remains, I feel the truth before me As bones can feel the rain Until finally I stand there Before the weathered stone. My heart cries out in victory Just a little less alone. Donna Burns Dietrich 2 Browns, Burnses, Horsleys, Sampsons, and Wrights THE BROWN FAMILY The photo above shows John Wesley Brown with his family at their farm on Posey Ridge Road. The photo was taken about 1907. Pictured left to right are John Wesley Brown with his baby daughter Charolette, Martha Samson Brown, Mary Brown with Verna Horton sitting in front of her, Ada Brown with Charles Horton sitting in front of her, Violet Brown (sitting beside Charles), Maggie Brown Horton holding daughter Hazel, Sadie Brown (standing), Will Horton holding daughter Evelyn, and an unknown girl. The farm pictured above is located between Stockdale and Beaver, Ohio. Todsy it is the site of Stoney Ridge Campground. The house was still standing until the 1990's when it was destroyed by fire. (Note: Evelyn Horton died around 1907. So it is very likely she may have died shortly after this picture was taken). 3 Browns, Burnses, Horsleys, Sampsons, and Wrights The photo to the right shows three of John Wesley Brown's daughters. Ada is sitting on the left. Mary is standing behind her, and Violet is the little girl sitting down. Below is another picture of the John Wesley Brown farm on Posey Ridge Road. After the death of Martha Samson Brown, the farm went to her daughter Violet and husband Clay Burns. Violet and Clay lived at the farm for a while, and Violet's son Donald Eugene was born there. 4 Browns, Burnses, Horsleys, Sampsons, and Wrights Descendants
