The work of some determined faculty is proving that interdisciplinary studies on the coast of Maine can be all that they hoped, and the Center is poised to become among the very best facilities of its kind. Tim’s Gift 22 14 By Mel Allen Photographs by Mark Alcarez Tim McDonough ’04 is an offensive lineman on the Bowdoin football team, a 20 year-old from South Boston who spent the summer working in a restaurant and having fun with friends — in between trips to the hospital for a battery of tests to determine whether he was a suitable match as a living lung donor for his aunt, who was dying of cystic fibrosis. Mel Allen tells us of Tim’s sacrifice, bravery, and the complex emotions that he and his family face in these extreme circumstances. • Fall 2008 the MAGAZINE of OSU COLLEGE of FORESTRY
FOCUS Fall 2008 THE MAGAZINE OF OSU COLLEGE OF FORESTRY Genetic artistry sculpting the next generation of poplar Giustina Gift • Wow Indeed! • Resistance is Utile • An Ounce of Fire Prevention... daptive Management may be a scientific approach for the study of complex ecosystems, but we have found the basic concepts to be useful A in transforming the College. We embarked on this task over 18 months ago with the realization that we needed to design an administrative and operating structure that would sustain our teaching, research and outreach efforts, excellence and relevance—in the face of uncertainties regarding operating finances, competing demands for forestlands, public policies, p ub lic p e r c e p t ion s, glob al change s in in du s t r y, an d t h e env ironm en t al imp a c t s of climate and people. Collectively we established the primary objectives of maintaining our current strengths, and optimizing our faculty interaction/ collaboration in order to provide the flexibility to respond to emerging scientific challenges and opportunities. We created and analyzed a number of model configurations to help determine the potential costs and benefits of each option. Our implementation processes began this spring, and on July 1, we officially transformed into the departments of Forest Engineering, Resources & Management (FERM), Forest Ecosystems & Society (FES), and Wood Science & Engineering (WSE). This transformation is a work-in- progress that is off to a good start. We will monitor, evaluate, and adjust as we move forward. This issue of Focus provides more details.

  • Letters and Sounds: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics Phase One
Letters and Sounds: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics Phase One Notes for practitioners and teachers Phase One Phase One falls largely within the Communication, Language and Literacy area of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. In particular, it will support linking sounds and letters in the order in which they occur in words, and naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet. It also draws on and promotes other areas of learning described in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), particularly Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Creative Development, where, for example, music plays a key part in developing children’s language. Phase One contributes to the provision for Communication, Language and Literacy; it does not constitute the whole language provision. Letters and Sounds: The activities in Phase One are mainly adult-led with the intention of teaching young children important basic elements of the Letters and Sounds programme such as oral segmenting and blending of familiar words. However, it is equally important to sustain and draw upon worthwhile, freely chosen activities that are provided for children in good early years settings and Reception classes. The aim is to embed the Phase One adult-led activities in a language-rich provision that serves the best interests of the children by fully recognising their propensity for play and its importance in their development. It follows that the high quality play activities which typify good provision will offer lots of opportunities to enrich children’s language across the six areas of learning: ■ Personal, Social and Emotional Development ■ Communication, Language and Literacy ■ Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy ■ Knowledge and Understanding of the World ■ Physical Development ■ Creative Development.
