Publishers’ Note This book is a compilation from the various published works of the holy Master Sri Swami Sivananda, including some of his earliest works extending as far back as the late thirties. The questions and answers in the pages that follow deal with some of the commonest, but most vital, doubts raised by practising spiritual aspirants. What invests these answers and explanations with great value is the authority, not only of the sage’s intuition, but also of his personal experience. Swami Sivananda was a sage whose first concern, even first love, shall we say, was the spiritual seeker, the Yoga student. Sivananda lived to serve them; and this priceless volume is the outcome of that Seva Bhav of the great Master. We do hope that the aspirant world will benefit considerably from a careful perusal of the pages that follow and derive rare guidance and inspiration in their struggle for spiritual perfection. May the holy Master’s divine blessings be upon all. SHIVANANDANAGAR, JANUARY 1, 1993.

  • Swami Vivekananda's Mission and Teachings
LIFE IS A VOYAGE1: Swami Vivekananda’s Mission and Teachings – A Cognitive Linguistic Analysis with Reference to the Theme of HOMECOMING Suren Naicker Abstract This study offers an in-depth analysis of the well-known LIFE AS A JOURNEY conceptual metaphor, applied to Vivekananda’s mission as he saw it, as well as his teachings. Using conceptual metaphor theory as a framework, Vivekananda’s Complete Works were manually and electronically mined for examples of how he conceptualized his own mission, which culminated in the formation of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, a world-wide neo-Hindu organization. This was a corpus-based study, which starts with an overview of who Vivekananda was, including a discussion of his influence on other neo- Hindu leaders. This study shows that Vivekananda had a very clear understanding of his life’s mission, and saw himself almost in a messianic role, and was glad when his work was done, so he could return to his Cosmic ‘Home’. He uses these key metaphors to explain spiritual life in general as well as his own life’s work. Keywords: Vivekananda; neo-Hinduism; Ramakrishna; cognitive linguistics; conceptual metaphor theory 1 As is convention in the field of Cognitive Semantics, conceptual domains are written in UPPER CASE. Received: 5 December 2018; Accepted: 10 February 2019; Published: 18 February 2019 Abstract: This article describes the narratives and projections that shaped the contested character of Hardwar and the river Ganges as symbols par excellence of the Hindus’ claim to India’s sacred geography over the last two hundred years. It deliberates on the tactics and practices through which Hardwar’s ancient and legendary status has been employed to assert Hindu identity and territorial claims vis-à-vis the colonial administrators, but also to exclude the country’s Muslim and Christian populace. The purifying, divine land of Hardwar enabled the nationalist imagination and struggle for a Hindu India, even as it was instituted as a site for the internal purification of Hinduism itself, to mirror its glorious past. The article describes the contests and claims, based on religion and class, as well as the performance of socio-economic and existential anxieties that the sacred quality of Hardwar and the river Ganges continues to authorize and enable in post-colonial India. For this, we draw particularly on the Kanwar Mela, an annual event in which millions of mostly poor young men carry water from the river Ganges on foot, and often over long distances. We deliberate on the significance of the sacred water, rituals, and the journey in reinforcing these pilgrims’ perceptions of the self, and their moral claims over the nation and its territory.

religions Article Rethinking Neo-Vedanta:¯ Swami Vivekananda and the Selective Historiography of Advaita Vedanta¯ 1 James Madaio Oriental Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences, Pod Vodárenskou vˇeží 4, Prague 18208, Czech Republic; [email protected] Academic Editor: Francis X. Clooney, S.J. Received: 10 April 2017; Accepted: 16 May 2017; Published: 24 May 2017 Abstract: This paper problematizes the prevalent model of studying the “Neo-Vedanta”¯ of Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) principally in terms of an influx of Western ideas and nationalism. In particular, I demonstrate how scholarly constructions of “Neo-Vedanta”¯ consistently appeal to a high culture, staticized understanding of “traditional” Advaita Vedanta¯ as the alterity for locating Vivekananda’s “neo” or new teachings. In doing so, such studies ignore the diverse medieval and early modern developments in advaitic and Advaita Vedantic¯ traditions which were well-known to Vivekananda and other “Neo-Vedantins”.¯ Redressing this discursive imbalance, I propose that close attention to the way in which Swami Vivekananda drew from Indic texts opens up a wider frame for understanding the swami and the genealogy of his cosmopolitan theology. Keywords: Swami Vivekananda; Neo-Vedanta;¯ Advaita Vedanta;¯ Advaita; modern Hinduism 1. Introduction Reconsidering the study of Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), perhaps the most influential architect of global Hinduism, is instructive for shedding light on certain problematic trends in the analysis of precolonial and colonial period advaita related movements. It also calls reflexive attention to the way in which interpretations of Vivekananda’s life and teachings can often be implicated in what H. White calls the “practical past” (White 2014); that is, readings of the past that are ideologically pursued in the service of the present.

Yet, the Christian population is only between 2-4 percent in a total population of about one billion in India. Most of the Christian converts are from the low caste and the tribals. Missiological Issues in the Encounter with Emerging Hinduism PAUL G HIEBERT Neo-Hinduism emerged as a revitahzation movement in Indias encounter with the West In recent years it has become increasingly aggressive One branch has stressed Hindu spirituality and has sent missionaries to evangelize the world The other has become political, seeking to establish Hindutva, a Hindu nation, and to persecute Christians as followers of a foreign religion Around the world Indian immigrants have established Hindu communities and spread their faith This resurgence of Hinduism as an active formal religion challenges Christians to rethink their mission to Hindus and the Hindu world oly men declared Sunday, 6 December 1992, auspicious, and more than 300,000 people gathered that day in Ayodhya, a pilgrim town north of HVaranasi in Urtar Pradesh India l Most wore the saffron color of Hindu nation alism At midday, they broke down the police barricades around a mosque, reported ly built on the rums of the temple that marks Rama's birthplace, and hammered it to the ground The construction of a new Rama temple was to begin that evening Violence triggered by the demolition killed 1,700 people across the subcontinent Supporters justified the action as the liberation of Hindu sacred space to unify the nation Cntics decried it as communalism—the antagonistic mobilization of one reli gious community against another—as an attack on Indian civil society This event is symbolic of the emergence of Hindu nationalism in India that defines the nation in terms of ethnicity and religion, and appeals to primordial loyal ties deeper than the political affiliations of Nehru's crumbling secular democratic state It has also led to a growing crisis of governabihty that invites the use of vio lence to achieve political ends Paul G.
