My first natural history enthusiasm was certainly insects. Later, an under- graduate project on the case-building behaviour of caddisfly larvae led to a doctoral thesis on the same subject. By that time I knew more than most people would wish to know about caddis larval cases. Leaving them completely behind, I spent two years teaching at the University of Khartoum in the Sudan, returning to the UK as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in 1968. On arriving there I was asked to give three lectures that probably changed the direction of my career. At that time, Glasgow final-year Zoology students were given, apart from their special subject lectures, a series of occasional lectures called the ‘A Course’. This in essence consisted of a handful of us aca- demics each giving a few lectures on whatever took our fancy. Three lectures on caddis cases seemed excessive, so I decided to go to the other extreme and talk about everything that was built by whatever animal. This, I decided, was not to be a mere parade through the animal kingdom but an attempt to make some sense of, and discover some pattern in, the behaviour of that miscellaneous bunch of web spinners, house, case, mound, and nest builders. That is what I have tried to do ever since, and this book is an attempt to explain that biology, the biology of animal architecture and building behaviour, to anyone to whom that sounds appealing. It is a book about who builds, how they build and what those buildings do. It touches upon environmental impact, animal intelligence, architecture, engineering vii Preface and building materials, on the organization of workforces, on traps, tools and art. Writing this book has not been the lonely experience that some authors complain about. I would like to thank all those colleagues and friends who, through their daily interest and encouragement, contributed to its completion. I dedicate this book to him. viii 1 The Builders Standing with its back to the Atlantic atop a 90m (nearly 300ft) vertical cliff, at the base of which the ocean seethes and foams, is the great semi-circular, prehistoric fort of Dun Aengus. The location is the very westernmost fringe of Europe, the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. On the landward side, the fort’s protection from attack is man-made. The half-moon inner sanctuary of the fort (45m or 148ft across) is embraced by a drystone rampart reaching over 5m high and nearly 4m thick. Beyond this are a further three irregular semi- circles of defensive walls and, should even the outer one be overrun, the attackers must then negotiate a field of massive limestone shards, jagged and stood on end. This is a chevaux-de-frise, a term also used to describe the barbed-wire enlargements that protected First World War trenches, but literally ‘horses of Friesland’, spiked obstacles used at least from the seventeenth century to break up cavalry charges. The age of Dun Aengus is uncertain, although it is probably over 2,000 years old: more surprisingly, we still do not know what threat could have stimulated the building of such formidable defences. Our need for protection is not any different from that of other species. Animals have always had enemies, in particular the climate, and other species seeking to prey upon them. We are just a newcomer species resorting to building to protect ourselves in a threatening world which includes 1 The Builders our fellow humans among our enemies, and we are not the first species to make use of a chevaux-de-frise. Think of the dangers that beset insects in a tropical environment. Probably the two greatest are predation by birds and by ants. The hairiness of some caterpillars is a defence against one or both of these, but ultimately the caterpillar must become an adult butterfly or moth. This requires a radical reorganization in its body design— crawling around eating leaves is replaced by flight, nectar feeding and mating. This transition can only be accomplished as an immobile, and therefore vulnerable, pupa. The commercial silkworm typifies the defensive strategy of moth caterpillars. It spins a silken cocoon to enclose itself completely, then it casts off its caterpillar skin to become a pupa from which a moth will later hatch. The silkworm is a hairless caterpillar, but imagine the consequences of a hairy caterpillar pupating inside its cocoon. Not only will it be shedding a hairy skin that crowds the inside of the cocoon, it will also be casting away protection that has already served it well against the threat of ants and even birds. The caterpillar of the moth species Aethria carnicauda, is densely covered in long hairs. When ready to pupate in its native habitat of Central American forests, it selects a straight plant stem as a site to prepare its pupal defences. Facing down the stem, the caterpillar reaches back over its body to pluck out its hairs one by one with its jaws. Each hair in turn is secured to the stem, using the silk thread which is extruded from its mouth. In this way, the caterpillar builds up a disc of radiating bristles, a barrier to anything trying to pass up the stem.

ULTIMATE PHILIPPINES 14 JANUARY – 4/10/17 FEBRUARY 2017 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ-VELASCO This year´s Birdquest “Ultimate Philippines” tour comprised of the main tour and two post-tour extensions, resulting in a five-week endemics bonanza. The first three weeks focused on the better-known islands of Luzon, Palawan and Mindanao, and here we had cracking views of some of those mind-blowing, world´s must-see birds, including Philippine Eagle, Palawan Peacock-Pheasant, Wattled Broadbill and Azure- breasted Pitta, amongst many other endemics. The first extension took us to the central Visayas where exciting endemics such as the stunning Yellow-faced Flameback, the endangered Negros Striped Babbler or the recently described Cebu Hawk-Owl were seen well, and we finished with a trip to Mindoro and remote Northern Luzon, where Scarlet-collared Flowerpecker and Whiskered Pitta delighted us. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Ultimate Philippines www.birdquest-tours.com Our success rate with the endemics– the ones you come to the Philippines for- was overall very good, and highlights included no less than 14 species of owl recorded, including superb views of Luzon Scops Owl, 12 species of beautiful kingfishers, including Hombron´s (Blue-capped Wood) and Spotted Wood, 5 endemic racket-tails and 9 species of woodpeckers, including all 5 flamebacks. The once almost impossible Philippine Eagle-Owl showed brilliantly near Manila, odd looking Philippine and Palawan Frogmouths gave the best possible views, impressive Rufous and Writhed Hornbills (amongst 8 species of endemic hornbills) delighted us, and both Scale-feathered and Rough-crested (Red-c) Malkohas proved easy to see.

And they were the “real” thing, wild birds in the forest and no “tame”, staked-out birds at feeding stations (Dani Lopez-Velasco). ULTIMATE PHILIPPINES 18 JANUARY – 7 / 13 FEBRUARY 2015 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ-VELASCO This year´s Ultimate Philippines tour was yet again another highly successful tour to this avian endemic paradise. The first three weeks focused on the better-known islands of Luzon, Palawan and Mindanao, and here we saw some of those mind-blowing, world´s must-see birds, including Philippine Eagle, Palawan Peacock-Pheasant, Azure-breasted Pitta and Luzon Bleeding-heart (singing from a branch!), amongst many other endemics. The extension took us to the central Visayas where exciting endemics such as Negros Striped Babbler or the recently described Cebu Hawk-Owl were seen well. A pair of Ashy Ground Thrushes were seen at point blank range, skulking Falcated and Striated Wren-Babblers were lured into view, an amazing male Celestial Monarch, getting very rare these days, was seen nicely after a lot of effort, together with Short-crested Monarch, and the rare White-fronted Tit gave also prolonged scope views as it sang from a dead snag.

The trip over was uneventful. Upon landing on this tropical island, we met up with a local guide who took us to a nearby tree to show us a roosting owl. We had come to see the Mantanani Scops Owl, a small island inhabitant, and here we were enjoying scope looks a mere three minutes after landing! After a quick lunch, we took a short walk around the island, picking up Collared Kingfisher, Pied Triller and Olive-backed Sunbird. With no time to waste, we headed back to the mainland and drove south through forested areas to the Zigzag Road, seeing eight Red-vented Cockatoos fly across the road en route. This was a good move, as soon we were enjoying Palawan Hornbill, Bar-bellied Cuckooshrike, Ashy Drongo, the huge Great Slaty Woodpecker, noisy Blue-naped Parrots, Spot-throated Woodpecker and Greater Coucal. After an action-packed afternoon, we retired tour hotel, stopping briefly for a Palawan Frogmouth that was frustratingly heard but not seen. (Pete Morris) CLASSIC PHILIPPINES 20 JANUARY – 11 FEBRUARY 2019 LEADERS: PETE MORRIS and JULIEN MAZENAUER Having operated a long series of successful Philippines tours over the last three decades it was once again time to reorganize the tours. With so much to see in the Philippines we decided to return once again to the two tour strategy, with this tour and the Remote Philippines which concentrates on some of the smaller islands and their associated endemics. This, our Classic Philippines tour, cherry picks its way around the three main islands of Luzon, Mindanao and Palawan, scoring heavily on both numbers of endemics and the proportion of ‘signature’ birds seen. As such, it is the recommended 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Classic Philippines 2019 www.birdquest-tours.com The nightbirding was fantastic as typifed by this brilliant Philippine Frogmouth at Mt Kitanglad (Pete Morris) tour for those only intending to visit this fascinating archipelago once. Sadly, habitat destruction continues at pace in this already critically-threatened country; a visit sooner rather than later is rec- ommended! During our more-or-less three weeks, we recorded a grand total of just under 340 species, a good to- tal for the tour, and more importantly we scored a high proportion of the ‘diamond’ birds - those highly desired species. Some of those iconic birds that we drooled over included the must-see Philippine Eagle, Palawan Peacock-Pheasant and Azure-breasted Pitta. Our success rate with the endemic targets overall was very good indeed, and special mention on this tour should go to the 12 species of owl seen (including Philippine Eagle-Owls near to Manila and impressive Giant Scops Owls), the amazing Flame-breasted Fruit-Dove, 11 stunning species of kingfshers and three gorgeous species of pitta.

In July 2015, 6th to 9th, I visited the island of Palawan, the Philippines, arriving in Puerto Princesa on a Philippine Airlines flight from Manila, at 6.40, and returning on another PA flight, at 19.30.The visit was a part of private RTW birding tour and I had arrived in the Philippines already four days ago, spending three days in Bohol before flying to Palawan, via MNL. I had purchased the Philippine Airlines tickets in the Internet, at www.philippineairlines.com. The return flights cost PHP4.731 (€90), including a generous extra allowance for luggage, for a separate fee included in the total price. The flight departed at Ninoy Aquino T3 in Manila, and also returned there. In Manila, I had stayed at Salem Domestic Guesthouse, next to T4, a recommended place for €31 per night, with a shared (but clean) bathroom and no breakfast. After my return at MNL, I stayed at Red Planet, Aseana City, for €47 per night, without breakfast. In there, the room was quite good, even though a bit noisy, and tasty food could be obtained next door, at Family Mart and at a Korean restaurant with a take-away option. A taxi ride there cost PHP250 (€5). On board, the Philippine Airlines flight was freezing cold like an ice box. Somehow the airline believes that uncomfortably low temperatures, both at their airport boarding areas and on board, are a feature of luxury service.

    Philippines Endangered Endemics 18th February to 7th March 2014 (18 days) & Visayan Islands Extension 7th to 13th March 2014 (7 days) Palawan Scops Owl by Rich Lindie Trip Report compiled by: Tour Leader Rich Lindie Our blaze through the Philippines got off to a flying start, literally. Fortunately, our flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa was a short one and we departed early in the morning, allowing us to hit the ground birding, with plenty of daylight to spare. We started at a patch of mangroves on the city edge, bagging Chinese Egret within moments of our arrival, along with a host of waders, a handful of Common Kingfishers, our first Philippine Pied Fantail and the aurora subspecies of Olive-backed Sunbird. In scrub, back at the road, we saw our first Ashy- fronted Bulbuls, White-collared Kingfisher, Rufous-tailed Tailorbird, a Crested Honey Buzzard and Pied Trillers. We then began our drive to Sabang, birding at a few stops along the way. Highlights of these stops included sightings of a Pale Spiderhunter that came screaming in to investigate my recording, Pygmy and Palawan Flowerpeckers, a male Copper-throated Sunbird, Lovely Sunbird, Yellow-throated Leafbird, Asian Fairy-bluebird, a Sulphur-bellied Bulbul, our only Palawan Tits of the tour, two Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoos and some raucous Spot-throated Flamebacks. Special mention, however, must go to the delightful Palawan Scops Owl that put in an appearance later that day. For the morning of our first official full day of birding, we started with breakfast at our well-appointed beach hotel in Sabang, before taking the short drive to the boat dock in town.

Fortunately, our flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa was a short one and we departed early in the morning, allowing us to hit the ground birding, with plenty of the day left to chalk up an impressive total! We started at a patch of mangroves near the airport where our first birds included our first Philippine Pied Fantails and the aurora subspecies of Olive-backed Sunbird. In the scrub we saw: our first Ashy- fronted Bulbuls, Collared Kingfisher, Rufous-tailed Tailorbird, and Pied Trillers. Our most exciting species near the port was a vibrant Blue-eared Kingfisher perched at eye-level off the boardwalk of our delicious lunch spot! Unfortunately, no Chinese Egrets were in evidence, as it seemed most had left early for breeding grounds - perhaps due to the drought and heat of this El Nino year. This species was one of the astoundingly few dips we had on this productive tour. We began our drive to Sabang, birding a few stops along the way.
