The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) ABOUTCDF he Children's Defense Fund (CDF) exists to provide a strong and effective voice for all the children ofAmerica who cannot vote, lobby, or speak for themselves. We pay Tparticular attention to the needs of poor and minority children and those with disabilities. Our goal is to educate the nation about the needs of children and encourage preventive investment in children before they get sick, drop out of school, suffer family breakdown, or get into trouble. Our staff includes specialists in health, education, child welfare, mental health, child development, adolescent pregnancy prevention, family income, and youth employment. CDF gathers, analyzes, and disseminates information on key issues affecting children. We monitor the development and implementation offederal and state policies. We provide information, technical assistance, and support to a network of state and local child advocates, service providers, and public and private sector officials and leaders. We pursue an annual legislative agenda in the U.S. Congress and in states where we have offices. CDF educates hundreds of thousands of citizens annually about children's needs and responsible options for meeting those needs. Since 1973 CDF has been working to create a nation in which the web of family, community, private sector, and government supports for children is so tighdy woven that no child can slip through. We believe that no child should be left behind, and that every child needs and deserves a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life. CDF is a private, nonprofit organization supported by foundations, corporate grants, and individual donations. Highlights ● Wiki Education held its second in-person board meeting for the 2017-2018 fiscal year in Tiburon. Our Senior Leadership team informed the Board of key initiatives the organization is planning to undertake in fiscal year 2018–19. Board members also discussed and approved Wiki Education's new strategic plan, as well as the annual plan and budget for the year ahead. ● We announced our new three-year strategy. The strategy focuses on three strategic goals around Equity, Quality, and Reach: Increase knowledge equity by focusing on content and communities that are underrepresented on Wikipedia and Wikidata; provide people who seek knowledge online with accurate information in topic areas that are underdeveloped; and reach large audiences with free knowledge by making Wikipedia and Wikidata more complete. [[email protected]] Chris Harter is the Director of Library and Reference Services at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans. [[email protected]] The four institutions are collaborating to process “hidden” Civil Rights collections through a grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources. Three separate grants were submitted to CLIR, with the Auburn Avenue Research Library and Emory submitting a joint grant. Because all were about processing Civil Rights hidden collections, CLIR approached the institutions and offered to provide one large grant as a collaborative project. Each are administered separately, for example, each manages their own budget and reporting to CLIR. We are excited about being part of CLIR's grant program and we thank them for this opportunity. The son of Andrew Jackson Young, Sr., a dentist and Daisy Fuller Young, a teacher, Young grew up in a hostile multi-ethnic neighborhood where his father taught him how to box neighborhood where his father taught him how to box for survival. Graduating from Gilbert Academy in 1947, at age fifteen, Young was an avid reader who idolized Dr. Ralph Bunche. Attending Dillard University for a year, Young transferred to Howard University where he was on the track and swim teams. Graduating with a B.S. degree in pre-med in 1951, Young was admitted to Hartford Theological Seminary. In 1952, in Marion, Alabama, he met future wife, Jean Childs, as he pastored summer bible school, studied the works of Ghandi and agitated for voting rights. Later, Young met and befriended Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He earned his B.D. degree from Hartford Theological Seminary in 1955. A product of the United Church of Christ's American Missionary Association (AMA), Young’s first pastorate was at the AMA-founded Bethany Congregational Church in Thomasville, Georgia. In 1957, he went on to the National Council of Churches in New York to work as associate director for youth work and as an administrator for United Church of Christ’s Christian Education Program.

Brief Summary of Report If data is the new oil, then student data is among the most desirable data wells of all. While some states have enacted laws to better protect students and their privacy, policymakers have left a formidable front door open: that is, the ability for detailed student information to be made public by schools un- der an exemption in the federal student privacy law, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. This exemption is called the Directory Information exemption. When schools choose to, they can designate certain student information of their choice to be made public without prior consent. This information becomes directory information. To provide a balance, Congress provided a right that stu- dents and parents can restrict unconsented public disclosure of their directory information. Eligible students can place this restriction on their directory information by submitting an opt out request at the school. Parents or guardians of students under 18 will have to place the restriction for the student. This right to restrict disclosure is an essential one, but students, parents and others may not be aware of the importance and profound privacy impact of this information.
