Romero HE COVER OF THIS ISSUE OF the Journal of Moral Theology presents a bronze panel depicting the death of Christ, from La Porta della Morte, which is found at the southernmost entryway into the nave of St. Peter’s Basilica. Produced by Tthe famed Italian artist Giacomo Manzú (1908-1991) and dedicated by Pope Paul VI in 1964, the ten panels of the bas-relief bronze door depict distinct episodes of human mortality and fragility. Manzú was concerned to illustrate the many ways that human beings encounter and experience mortality from the mundane to the glorious moments, exemplified in horrific violence (crucifixion, martyrdom, murder), in accident, and in the quiet peace of last breaths and rest for the weary. The door brings together distinct meditations on particular and particularizing instances of mortal fragility in human life. In so doing, Manzú presents a bronze-cast argument for both the unity and the hope of humanity: vulnerable beings, each implicated in the history of creations of beauty, of personal and social sin, and of the realities of evil, and yet each personally accommodated by and reconciled with God in Christ, and called to participate in the good news of God’s loving care and merciful regard for all creation. For Giacomo Manzú, artistic engagement with the particulars of mortality provides a vantage to illustrate aspects of the Gospel that are easy to overlook: the paradox of human vulnerability and the glory yet to be revealed. As paradox, La Porta della Morte is an apt metaphor for the editorial intuition animating the conception and development of this issue of the Journal of Moral Theology: Engaging Disability. Specifically, we are convinced that theo-ethical reflection on the complex realities and diverse experiences of disability provides a vantage to recognize aspects of contemporary life in Christ that are easy to overlook: the paradox of disability in a culture where errors of judgment and sinful practices concerning the normativity of the able body/able mind habituate into morally vicious forms of social and communal life. Oriented by the disciplinary perspectives and diverse methodologies of the Catholic moral tradition, we hope these articles will motivate, inspire, and provoke theologians working in Catholic theological ethics toward critical self-reflection on how their own interpretive and speculative work might engage disability regarding 2 Mary Jo Iozzio and Miguel J. Romero the human good, the common good, the practice of virtue, the call to happiness, discipleship, and service. Before launching into the issue, we offer a brief introduction to the state of the academic specialization called “Disability Studies.” An introductory bibliography follows this Preface. The specialized, scholarly study of disability is usually identified as beginning in the early 1990s, coincident with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990). Over the last thirty years, the discourse of Disability Studies has continued to develop and its critical contributions have been recognized in many academic societies including the American Academy of Religion, Society of Biblical Literature, Modern Language Association, American Historical Association, American Educational Research Association, American Sociological Association, and others. Of the first wave of scholars specializing in disability, many had personal experience with a family member or someone close who lived with a disability, and it was through their formal academic training in theology, scripture, or history that they acquired the skills of critical reflection which empowered them to reflect on and interrogate that experience. (This is true also for most of the authors in this Journal of Moral Theology issue, even though they represent a second wave.) Over these years, among the principal developments in the field is the increasing presence of scholars with disabilities teaching, publishing, and encouraging their students and colleagues to recognize the interpretive advantage and speculative insights generated by the distinct hermeneutic of the disability critique emerging in academic, religious, social, political, and legal institutions. As with other critical studies that aim to retrieve the histories of people who were not members of the dominant communities and cultures in which they lived and were thereby marginalized and otherwise oppressed (e.g., women, children, ethnic and racial minorities), people with disabilities have a material history in culture and tradition that requires intentional focus and disciplined sensitivity to obscure, indirect, and implied references in the resources at our disposal. For the Catholic theological tradition, these sources include Scripture, the magisterial tradition, Church Councils, liturgy and the sacraments, theological reflection, and Canon Law. Disability

UELMEN Within the vibrant life of the Catholic Church today, many currents of spirituality and specific projects can shed light on the encyclical’s themes and provide examples of what its principles might look like in practice. This note focuses on how Chiara Lubich’s spirituality of unity might offer a helpful way for people to understand how to live these principles in their everyday lives. It also discusses how the “Economy of Communion” and other concrete projects and prac- tices of Focolare, the movement Lubich founded, foster economic justice and human development. T A CERTAIN POINT in his marvelous and still timely essay on love, AJosef Pieper struggled with whether the idea of universal love might make any practical difference in the world. He wrote: On the one hand, universal human love cannot accomplish anything practical in the world; man’s historical predicaments cannot be solved by love. But on the other hand . universal love is not simply an unrealistic fantasy. Rather it is an innate potentiality reminiscent, as it were, of paradise, which is revealed for a moment solely in the exceptional figures of great lovers [such as Francis of Assisi].1 One might trace a similar skepticism in some of the initial commentary on Caritas in veritate. FOREWORD The case dealt with in this paper is a development project that took place at Salvador Bahia, Brazil, between 2001 and 2006. The “protagonist” is AVSI1, an Italian NGO of Catholic inspiration linked 2 with the Communion and Liberation movement. This project is defined as “urban upgrading” in the terminology of cooperation for development and consists of the integration in the city of informal areas or “favelas”. It is part of a process that began in the early 1990s, when Card. Moreira Neves, The Archbishop of Salvador Bahia, struck by the inhuman living conditions of the inhabitants of the favela of Novos Alagados, requested the help of AVSI who had been collaborating with pastoral initiatives to improve and legalize the living conditions of the favela population in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. That was the beginning of AVSI’s charitable presence in Novos Alagados, with educational activities, in a favela inhabited by 15,000 people, 30% of whom lived in houses built on pile- dwellings (palafittes) along the bay shoreline. The advantage of such shanties was that nobody owned them or the area, so it was possible to occupy them. Through a series of steps, this charitable activity developed into such a sizeable project that it now affects the living conditions of 500,000 inhabitants of the Bahia favelas.

    Page 1 of 2 Fishers of Men Fishers of Men By the Honorable Senator Rick Santorum Like most American Catholics, I have followed the recent sex scandals in the Church with profound sympathy for victims, revulsion over priests who prey on minors and frustration at the absence of hierarchical leadership. Unlike most, I have been visited by the gift of hope; for I see in this fall an opportunity for ecclesial rebirth and a new evangelization of America. This "new evangelization," advocated strenuously by Pope John Paul II, has the potential for restoring confidence in the priesthood while empowering all American Catholics. The most obvious change must occur within American seminaries, many of which demonstrate the same brand of cultural liberalism plaguing our secular universities. My hope was rekindled last week as our American Cardinals proposed from Rome an "apostolic visitation" of seminaries emphasizing "the need for fidelity to the Church's teaching, especially in the area of morality." It is an arduous task. However, the Pope made it clear last week that he expects the strong appeal of the Cardinals to be followed by decisive Episcopal action. It is startling that those in the media and academia appear most disturbed by this aberrant behavior, since they have zealously promoted moral relativism by sanctioning "private" moral matters such as alternative lifestyles. Priests, like all of us, are affected by culture. When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm.
