Primarily, the measure of its projected success will be its capacity to serve as a candid chronicle of the year's events. To adhere to a rigid theme is to limit and to channel — often too narrowly — the minds and hands of available talent. Rather than confine poetry and photography, artist and writer, to a single limiting subject, brush and pen were given creative freedom. The seed has been sown, the roots have taken hold, the stalk has shot up, the Redwood has emerged — simple but stately — presenting Santa Clara's September to June record: a perennial account written of the past, read in the present, and remembered in the future.
