This region of Europe is crucial for our understanding of the paleobiogeography and evolution of these middle-sized lizards. Although this clade has a broad geographical distribution across the continent today, its presence in the fossil record has only rarely been reported. Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

BOUFFORD2 Harvard University Herbaria 22 Divinity Avenue Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138-2020 [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT Dot maps are provided to depict the distribution at the county level of the taxa of Magnoliophyta: Fabaceae growing outside of cultivation in the six New England states of the northeastern United States. The maps treat 172 taxa (species, subspecies, varieties, and hybrids, but not forms) based primarily on specimens in the major herbaria of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, with most data derived from the holdings of the New England Botanical Club Herbarium (NEBC). Brief synonymy (to account for names used in standard manuals and floras for the area and on herbarium specimens), habitat, chromosome information, and common names are also provided. KEY WORDS: flora, New England, atlas, distribution, Fabaceae This article is the eleventh in a series (Angelo & Boufford 1996, 1998, 2000, 2007, 2010, 2011a, 2011b, 2012a, 2012b, 2012c) that presents the distributions of the vascular flora of New England in the form of dot distribution maps at the county level (Figure 1). Seven more articles are planned. The atlas is posted on the internet at http://neatlas.org, where it will be updated as new information becomes available. This project encompasses all vascular plants (lycophytes, pteridophytes and spermatophytes) at the rank of species, subspecies, and variety growing independent of cultivation in the six New England states. -

Few birds were seen in the early stages of the journey as we sped along the good motorways. Once we had turned off onto minor roads for the final leg of the journey we began to see a few raptors and shrikes. We stopped at a suitable pull in for a light lunch and to acclimatise to the hot dry conditions. Moving on, we were soon climbing towards the hilltop town of Castelo Rodrigo with its ruined castle on the summit. Our hotel was located within the old town just below the castle, where we were soon allocated rooms for our stay. Day 2 Thursday 23rd July Today we headed north to explore the Douro valley. En route we stopped at a roadside viewpoint which was opposite some cliffs where a small colony of Griffon Vultures breed. A couple of birds were seen below us settled on the grassy slopes, and there were a few ‘flyby’ individuals. -

THE PHYTOPHAGOUS FAUNA OF GORSE (ULEX EUROPAEUS L.) AND HOST PLANT QUALITY RICHARD LAWRENCE HILL, M.Sc. ABSTRACT This study of the interactions between the fauna attacking gorse (Ulex europaeus L.) and their host-plant, was undertaken as part of a project aimed at the biological control of Ulex in New Zealand. In particular, the effects of seasonal changes in host-plant primary and secondary chemistry, plant structure and foliage morphology on the seasonal perform- ance of the phytophagous insect fauna were examined. Seasonal patterns of flowering and fruiting were described. Seasonal changes in foliage water content and toughness were summarised, and patterns of growth were described. These were discussed in relation to Lawton's (1978) living space concept and other current literature. Seasonal variation in the concentrations of 6 types of secondary compounds in the foliage were described. High concentrations of alkaloids may protect vegetative buds from herbivore attack in early spring, but otherwise foliage appeared to be unprotected. Energy content and soluble carbohydrate content of gorse foliage remained relatively high throughout the growing season. Foliage nitrogen content was high at bud-burst but declined within 6 weeks to a constant low level. The insect fauna associated with Ulex europaeus in Britain was described, compared and contrasted with the equivalent continental fauna and the faunas of related host-plants. -

Adult lizards and snakes often have preferred body temperatures that can be lethal 5 to developing embryos and should prevent egg retention: how has viviparity repeatedly 6 evolved in the face of this pervasive mismatch? Here we resolve this paradox by conducting 7 phylogenetic analyses using data on thermal preference from 224 species. -

The Pyrenees French & Spanish A Greentours Natural History Holiday 10th to 23rd June 2013 Led by Paul Cardy Trip Report and Systematic Lists by Paul Cardy Day 1 Monday 10th June Arrival and Transfer to Cerdagne Having driven from the south western Alps, and having arrived in Toulouse the previous evening, I met the group at the airport in the morning. After loading the mini-bus, and having negotiated the complex road system around Toulouse, soon we were on the motorway and heading south towards Foix. Black Kite soared overhead, White Stork was seen, and a Montagu’s Harrier soared over arable fields. Once past Foix we stopped at a lakeside for a first picnic, of baguette, fruit, juice, etc. Here was Great Spotted Woodpecker, and Mandarin was added to the bird list! After Ax-les-Thermes the scenery became ever more interesting as we wound our way up to the Col de Puymorens. The road over the col was rather busier than usual today as the eponymous tunnel below it was closed for several months of repair work. Our first botanical stop was made for a slope sporting much fine Pyrenean Lily, an early highlight. This really was in superb flower today and although much was out of reach there were some fine examples within easy reach for photography. Also here was Silene rupestris. At the col itself, the slopes around still sporting much snow in this very atypical season, the rather late flora had some fine Pulsatilla vernalis and Trumpet Gentians. White flowers were a feature, with Ranunculus kuepferi and Anemone nemorosa alongside the pasque flowers. -
