Catalog Description: Music 019 is the study of advanced harmony or the later Romantic period and peering into the 20th Century Styles of contemporary music. This course incorporates the concepts from Music Theory III. In addition, through writing and analysis, the course will include: post-Romantic techniques such as borrowed chords and modal mixture, chromatic mediants, Neapolitan and augmented-sixth chords, 9th, 11th and 13th chords, altered chords and dominants; and 20th century techniques such as: Impressionism, tone rows, set theory, pandiatonicism and polytonalism, meter and rhythm.

Schedule Description:

This course continues the study of common practice harmony from Music 018 with the emphasis on advanced harmony of the later Romantic period of music. This course will also study the system and analysis of 20th Century Contemporary musical styles. In addition, through writing and analysis, the course will include: post-Romantic techniques such as borrowed chords and modal mixture, chromatic mediants, Neapolitan and augmented-sixth chords, 9th, 11th and 13th chords, altered chords and dominants; and 20th century techniques such as: Impressionism, tone rows, set theory, pandiatonicism and polytonalism, meter and rhythm.. Music 019 is a music major requirement but would be useful to qualified music students wanting to have a much deeper understanding of musical construction. Music 019 is offered only in the fall semester.

1. Write and identify in context borrowed chords, Neapolitans, augmented-sixth chords, 9th, 11th, and 13th chords, added sixth chords, and altered dominants. 2. Write and recognize examples of enharmonic modulation. 3. Define, analyze, and/or write examples of 20th century techniques such as: Impressionism, tone rows, set theory, pandiatonicism and polytonalism, and advanced approaches to meter and rhythm. 4. Compose music using musical elements included in course content.

Assessments: The CSLOs will be assessed by written assignments, tests and a final exam in the following manner:

Assessment instrument: written assignments To demonstrate CSLO 1, 2 and 3, the students will complete multiple written exercises each week in class and as homework, individually and in small groups. The complexity of the exercises and problems to be solved will increase as the semester progresses. Individual work will be assessed for stylistic accuracy and creativity.

To demonstrate CSLO 4 the students will compose an original composition using elements included in course content. Group work will be discussed in class and individual work will be assessed for accuracy.

Assessment instrument: Tests Closed book and closed note tests will be used to evaluate each student’s mastery of the same elements covered in the written assignments. Some of the tests may be timed. Work will be assessed for accuracy and creativity.

Assessment instrument: Final exam Questions/problems designed to illustrate mastery of CSLOs 1, 2 and 3 will be included in a comprehensive final exam and assessed for accuracy and creativity.

For CSLO 4) Compose original music using elements included in course content (PSLO 1, 2, 6 and 7).

Method of Evaluation/Grading: “A” work follows 90 – 100 % of the applicable stylistic practices and displays creative musical thought in written exercises, tests and the final exam. “C” work follows 70 – 79.99% of the applicable stylistic practices in written exercises, tests and the final exam.
