PRESIDENT’S REPORT A MEASURE OF SUCCESS By Beverly B. Price

Four years ago when I took the oath of office for AANR President, I intended to hit a home run every time I stepped up to the plate – and I intended to step up to the plate often. Little did I know then that the measure of success in baseball is significantly less than my idealistic vision.

Ty Cobb, outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, was the epitome of success in Major League Baseball, earning more than 40 baseball records, some of which stand today. And even his exceptional ERA (Earned Run Average) was a mere .367, about the equivalent of having a 1 in 3 success rate.

Does this mean that my analogy of hitting home runs was way off base (no pun intended) and the real measure of success was something greater than 1 in 3? I began to look at the other measures of success that the general public (as well as the AANR public) take to heart.

J.K. Rowling, the successful author of the Harry Potter novels, has stated, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case you fail by default.” I have never been accused of being cautious, so I have not failed by default.

George Clooney, American actor, credits his aunt Rosemary with the advice, “Just do it, and be willing to fail, and at least you gave it a shot.” Is that a careless attitude? Not for me.

Michelle Kwan’s first coach insisted that she learn to fall before she learned to ice skate. She knew that Michelle was bound to fall many times and that she needed to learn how to handle it. I have dealt with failure even as I have attempted to succeed at everything I’ve done for AANR.

Michael Jordan has missed more than 9,000 shots in his basketball career, has lost nearly 300 games. He states, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Although failure is not really acceptable for me, I have to reassess my goals every time that I fail and do what I can to turn it into a success.

Jack Lemmon, Academy Award winner, once said, “What stops you is the fear of failure. You will never achieve a deeper understanding of your work, or learn the tough lessons if you are liked or comfortable all the time.” For what it is worth, in the past four years I have been both disliked and uncomfortable. Neither has stopped me from learning what I needed to learn.

And some in AANR have considered everything I’ve done a failure. In order to make certain that I have given all my constituents their due, I can unequivocally state that if that is the case (and I don’t believe it is) that I meet Winston Churchill’s definition of success:

“Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.”

I am just as enthusiastic about AANR today as I was four years ago, and I will continue to carry that enthusiasm into the future. I still believe the best is yet to come and we can do marvelous things if we will simply work together to succeed. I pledge that I will give it my best effort.

To: AANR Members, Officers, Trustees, Region Presidents, Committee Chairs From: Erich E. Schuttauf, Interim Executive Director Date: June 29, 2018 for Later Distribution Re: AANR Convention Report

I appreciate this opportunity to address you and join you for the 2018 AANR Convention at DeAnza Springs in Jacumba, California. I have appreciated serving the Association these past couple of months in this position and working with President Bev Price who has put in many hours of hard work as AANR transitions to its new leadership team this month.

Here is a summary of significant developments prior to convention. Please note that Government Affairs and legal activity assisting members is documented separately in my section of the GA report from Tim Mullins.

Thank-You to DeAnza Springs The AANR staff and I appreciate the hard work by the staff and volunteers of our convention host club, DeAnza Springs. We’re grateful for your help making the AANR convention (as well as the AANR West region convention) possible this year.

Strong Participation in AANR’s 2018 Election Deciding New Leaders and Board Size! As I finalize this report we have received results from Vote-Now, the independent firm which handled the 2018 AANR Election. Previous editions of the club weekly report have provided the voting results but a couple results bear special mention. First, the participation by the electorate (18% of eligible voters) was an incredible turnout. Thank you to all of you who got the word out and encouraged members to make their voice heard! I extend special thanks to Carolina D’Aldana and Carolyn Hawkins of the staff for many long hours working with Vote-Now to make this happen as well.

AANR also made the significant decision to reduce the size of the AANR Board of Trustees from fourteen to seven by a vote of 3359 (favoring) to 1426 (disfavoring) in addition to removing the Philippines from AANR West. (4385 approving the removal versus 426 disapproving).

AANR Office Secures New Roof I assisted Finance Director Judy Mason with her very diligent efforts to get a full and fair settlement from the insurance company after the roof on the AANR office was damaged last fall during Hurricane Irma. Along with shepherding these monies, Judy oversaw the hiring of a qualified roofer who made repairs with minimal impact on association finances. Despite repeated storms this summer, the office remains dry and sound. Feel the Freedom

AANR Standees Coming to a Club or Convention Near You! With inspiration and guidance from AANR Vice President Sharon McLeod, the Association has created whimsical Standees that can be used to promote your events by encouraging visitors to take their picture (under club conditions and monitoring of course) with these life-size posters/ These pictures can be posted to social media such as Facebook and Twitter along with club and event information for which there is a place on the Standees. Details have appeared in your weekly report. or please call the office for more information and assistance.

AANR Region Convention Visits to AANR Florida and AANR Southwest This summer I have already had an opportunity to join AANR Florida (along with Jeff Baldasarre, Director of Communications / Marketing) and to to AANR Southwest for their respective annual conventions. Kudos to AANR Florida for the incredible teamwork which resulted in prominent treatment of nudist clubs and beaches on www.visitflorida.com ‘s website. Visit Florida is the official arm of the state’s industry and the promotion of our industry is considerable under the heading “Beaches.” For its part, AANR Southwest continues with an innovative “” program to encourage visits to clubs throughout the region while getting their passport stamped. The region is also exploring some new trade and travel shows.

Personally, I appreciate the warm welcome that AANR Florida President Florida President Jim Wulchuk and the Edun Lake club’s welcome / hard work hosting. Thank you AANR Southwest President Ted Peck and Star Ranch for your welcomes and significant efforts from the dedicated club volunteers who hosted.

AANR Mourns Passing of Long-Time Members and Leaders Over the past several months we have been saddened to learn of the passing of a number of long-time friends and leaders of your Association. These include AANR Western Canada Trustee and Finance Chair Bob Campbell, Gigi Kraus of Shangri La Ranch and Mother of AANR Vice President Elect Patty Faber, as well as Turner Stokes, Past President of the American Sunbathing Association / AANR and long-time Washington DC Government Affairs Representative. Stories with tribute to Bob and Gigi have already appeared in The Bulletin. Turner has been honored with articles appearing in numerous media including The Washington Post, National Public Radio, and Smithsonian online.

Nude Recreation Week Celebrations This report is being compiled prior to the celebration of 2018 Week. However, AANR has already received inquiry from Forbes.com and National Public Radio expressing interest. An article about Nude Recreation Week ran in the July 2018 issue of The Bulletin and a follow-up report will be made at convention. In addition, statistics on web traffic and sales of new memberships are provided by Jeff each week in the report to members and clubs.

Report: Public Relations Committee

Date: 2018-06-29

Chair: Sharon McLeod

This report contains: • Information about AANR’s new “Standees.” • Monthly reports, which include Press Releases, from Mary Jane Kolassa of Paradise Advertising & Marketing, who provides PR support on a contract basis.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 1 of 44 Standees project: Stand out on Social Media Social Media is a powerful agent for PR and Marketing. And yes, individual clubs can tap into this resource at very little cost. This explains one avenue that AANR has made available to your club. Problems: • A huge percentage of longtime and newbie nudists don’t want anyone to know that they frequent clothing-optional venues. • Clubs do not allow their members and visitors to take photographs on club grounds. • Today’s Social Media outlets (Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, and more) rely heavily on images. In fact, for many Genx, Millenials, and younger: if you don’t have and post a picture of an event, it didn’t happen.

Solution The AANR staff put their heads together and developed a Standee you can use at your club or venue. What is a Standees, you ask? Well, it’s a large poster or sign that advertises something. We’ve made a unique Standee that does the following: • Attracts interest: Your members and guests will love getting their photo taken with this Standee. We’ve already seen this happen with our test runs—people line up to get a turn! • Advertises whatever you want: We recommend that, in the dry-erase area at the bottom of the Standee, you place your club name, web address, and event du jour. But you can include anything you want! • Engages social media: With this Standee, you don’t have to do a thing. Your members and guests will enthusiastically post their pictures to their favorite Social Media platform where their friends and friends-of-friends will like and share. This advertising costs you nothing!

How to use the Standee This part is pretty easy: set up the Standee and let your members and guests know it’s there. If you are concerned about cameras in your club, choose one location where the Standee and cameras can come together. One logical location is at your front desk, where guests can take their picture as they arrive. They can then put that camera away and enjoy their stay.

Distributing Standees AANR advertised the Standees in the Weekly Report every week beginning in early May. They were available to clubs for $75—about half the production cost. AANR also provided one Standee to each region, to use in regionally sponsored tradeshows and to make available to clubs when requested. AANR wants to hear from your club and region: How have you used the Standees? How successful—or not—was your Standee? AANR would also love to post on the AANR Facebook page pictures of your Standee in action! Using Standees is a new and different idea with great promise. If successful, AANR will consider additional Standees designs in the future.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2018: THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR NUDE RECREATION HAS OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED THE SECOND SATURDAY IN JULY AS INTERNATIONAL SKINNY DIP DAY

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (Jan. 2, 2018) – Skinny-dipping, a wholesome tradition as old as mankind and frequently honored in art and movies, celebrates the natural joy of plunging into water without the hindrance of clothing. To celebrate this rite of summer, the American Association for Nude Recreation (www.aanr.com) has officially designated the second Saturday in July as International Skinny Dip Day. For 2018, International Skinny Dip Day will be observed on July 14th.

On International Skinny Dip Day, the textile world can join with naturists and free themselves of their clothes and inhibitions by taking a dip au natural in their backyard pool, a secluded spot on a river or lake, at a sanctioned or at one of AANR’s 200 clubs and resorts throughout the U.S., Canada and internationally.

International Skinny Dip Day (ISDD) serves as the culminating event during National Nude Recreation Week, an AANR tradition for 43 years. This annual celebration is an opportunity for individuals and families to visit clothing-optional clubs affiliated with AANR or (TNS), and experience firsthand one of the fastest growing trends in both travel and recreation – the Nakation™. Many AANR-affiliated clubs have activities and events planned throughout the week – such as open houses, dance parties, sports tournaments, chili cook-offs, “bare buns fun runs,” health screenings, art shows, and more.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 6 of 44 Or, for those looking to try Nakationing™ in the comfort of their own home, AANR recommends the following:

. Cool off: skinny-dip in your backyard pool . Make housekeeping fun: shed those clothes, turn on some music, and get out the mop . Get in touch with nature: garden nude in the privacy of your back yard . Exercise in the buff: hit the treadmill or the yoga mat . Telecommuting in the nude: working from home, in the nude, is increasing in popularity!

To interview an AANR spokesperson, please contact Jeffrey Baldasarre as noted above.

For 87 years, AANR has been the leading authority in North America on protecting the freedoms and rights of those who participate in wholesome, family- style nude recreation.

On International Skinny Dip Day, the textile world can join with naturists and free themselves of their clothes and inhibitions by taking a dip au natural in their backyard pool, a secluded spot on a river or lake, at a sanctioned nude beach or at one of AANR’s 200 clubs and resorts throughout the U.S., Canada and internationally.

International Skinny Dip Day (ISDD) serves as the culminating event during National Nude Recreation Week, an AANR tradition for 43 years. This annual celebration is an opportunity for individuals and families to visit clothing-optional clubs affiliated with AANR or The Naturist Society (TNS), and experience firsthand one of the fastest growing trends in both travel and recreation – the Nakation™. Many AANR-affiliated clubs have activities and events planned throughout the week – such as open houses, dance parties, sports tournaments, chili cook-offs, “bare buns fun runs,” health screenings, art shows, and more.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 10 of 44 Or, for those looking to try Nakationing™ in the comfort of their own home, AANR recommends the following:

Silver spoons, baby rompers and savings bonds are timeless gifts for newborns. However, if you’re seeking to bestow the most unique baby gift to the parents of the new arrival, consider a Legacy Certificate from the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR).

The Legacy Certificate, suitable for framing, verifies the bearer/baby was born nude. And although the Legacy certification does not enroll the child, nor the parent or purchaser into the association, it will certainly be the item that earns the most exceptional, inimitable and distinctive gift accolade.

To purchase a Legacy Certificate please contact AANR at 1-800-TRY-NUDE. The call is free and the certificate is only $25.00.

WHY NUDISTS WANT TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR EARTH DAY

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (January 26, 2018) – Earth Day 2018 has as its forum: End Plastic Pollution. And the American Association for Nude Recreation – an organization long known for promoting the natural life and encouraging its members to serve as eco-conscious custodians of planet Earth -- is compelled to share with you a few interesting, conscious-raising, and little-known facts this Earth Day, April 22nd.

1. Polyester, a plastic, is found in most every wardrobe in t-shirts, , jeans, (remember the 1970s double-knit leisure suits?), sweat wicking athletic wear, and even undergarments. AANR recommends you buy natural fiber clothes as necessary for life in the textile world, but more importantly pare down your closet. The number of garments the world consumes is a growing ecological issue in energy necessary to produce, and once out of fashion, the inability of polyester fiber clothing to biodegrade.

2. Take your clothes off at home and feel more comfortable free of restrictive garments. You’ll also save laundry work this way. Typical electric clothes washers and dryers generate five pounds of CO2 per washer/dryer cycle. Given it’s used an average of four times a week, that’s 20 pounds a week, 80 a month, and 960 pounds of CO2 a year per household. The typical nudist family will use the washer and dryer about half that. Within the American Association for Nude Recreation membership roles, that is a collective savings of 24 million pounds of CO2 per year.

3. Think about housekeeping and exercising in the nude. You sweat less, don’t dirty clothes, and can keep the air-conditioning bill and the clothes washing down too. In the sunbelt, by turning up the central air conditioning thermostat one degree, fuel consumption can be cut by as much as 10%.

4. Running one’s dishwasher produces approximately two pounds of CO2. Hand washing dishes is no better; that can use up to 15 gallons of heated water, which is almost three pounds of CO2 per dish washing. So, wait until the dishwasher is full to run it. AANR resorts have equipped with energy saver dishwashers, that when coupled with efficient use, reduces the washer’s carbon by 25%.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 13 of 44 5. Need to get away? Take a Nakation®, a clothing optional vacation. Remember, luggage kills fuel economy, which is one reason why checking it on the airplane costs you. You won’t need more than a carry-on for a Nakation®. You should travel light on road trips too. Did you know an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle reduces your car’s fuel economy by 2%? Nakationers® are able to pack less and travel more. And AANR-affiliated lodging facilities are extremely affordable. With 200 clubs, campgrounds and resorts to choose from in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and internationally, there’s bound to be one right for and near to you.

Despite all of the damage caused to the environment by man, most of it is reversible. As conscientious custodians we can restore habitats and return species to them; clean rivers; renovate buildings; replenish the topsoil and replant forests. Nudists are closely connected to and get eagerly involved in the preservation of our nation’s beaches, parks and other natural resources and they are also committed to reducing their personal impact on the Earth’s resources. To find an AANR club near you and learn about upcoming environmental activities planned, please visit http://www.aanr.com/aanr-clubs/.

Soon across the country, buds will be blossoming, bees buzzing and everyone will be enjoying blissfully warmer days in the great outdoors. Often times, though, in our congested cities and technology-focused lives, it can be difficult to really get in touch with nature. For those looking for a great way to unplug from cell phones and social media and reconnect with nature (and yourself) we have a solution…

Clothing optional and clothes free campgrounds and RV parks across the United States affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (www.aanr.com), which offer a way to escape the confines of the city and return to nature, on many different levels.

Think about the possibilities of a nude camping experience: • If you are not wearing any clothes then you have nowhere to put your cell phone…a true vacation or as AANR says, “a nakation®” • Going for a skinny dip in the nearby streams is sure to leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed • Imagine falling asleep—in the nude—listening to the sounds of nature outside your tent/camper as you gaze out at a star-studded sky

The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) is the largest and most respected organization of its kind. It is the authority on nude recreation and family social nudism, and has been so since 1931.

There are scores of AANR-affiliated resorts with campgrounds throughout North America, with tent and RV spaces, electrical and water, a sampling of which include:

• Cypress Cove, Kissimmee, FL • Glen Eden, Corona, CA • Dyer Woods, Foster, RI • Empire Haven, Moravia, NY • Shangri La Ranch, New River, AZ • Sunny Chinooks, Calgary, Alberta CANADA

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 17 of 44 And, when the clothes are shed, there are added health benefits…

It is widely accepted that sunlight counteracts the Winter Blues. (Studies indicate your body needs at least 20 minutes a day of sunshine over at least 75% of your body to help prevent a vitamin D deficiency – of which one notable side effect is depression.) Therefore, it follows that those who routinely combine the benefits of a daily exercise in the buff, with the need for sunlight on the skin, are on a steady course for healthy living.

And here are some popular activities at nudist campgrounds/resorts throughout the US: Swimming nude (In one survey, we found that one in five Americans have skinny- dipped at one time.) “Dare to go bare,” 5k runs Nude volleyball tournaments “Bare Buns Bikers rides”

Other activities include nude Frisbee golf, gardening, petanque, tennis, pickleball, kayaking and there is nude bowling, jazzercize, swimming, table tennis and more.

Think nudism is un-American? Think again, known as "The First American," Benjamin Franklin was fond of taking daily “air baths” sitting nude for an hour or so while he read or wrote. Others known to have enjoyed skinny-dipping or other nude activities include John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau. In popular culture, Helen Mirren, Drew Barrymore, Alanis Morissette, Elle McPherson, Alicia Silverstone, Woody Harrelson, Heidi Klum and many others have indicated that they too enjoy shedding their clothes.

For 87 years, AANR has been the leading authority in North America on protecting the freedoms and rights of those who participate in wholesome, family-style nude recreation. Report: Public Relations Committee Page 21 of 44 Olive Dell Ranch Announces 9th Annual 5K Nude Run 'Bare Burro 5K Trail Run' set to take off April 22!

COLTON, Calif. (Feb. 23, 2018) – Olive Dell Ranch has selected the date for its annual nude running race, the Bare Burro 5K Trail Run: Sunday, April 22. The challenging route goes through the trails and hills in the rustic Ranch, and nudity is mandatory for all runners — although shoes are recommended. The 2018 Bare Burro 5K Trail Run is sponsored by good® Running Sunglasses and Pickle Juice isotonic sports drink.

"The Bare Burro is a 5K like no other," according to Olive Dell Ranch owner Becki Kilbornsaid. "We changed the course last year, making it more challenging, and we got a lot of positive feedback on it. This is a serious running race."

The first Bare Burro Run was held in 2010 and the Bare Burro is now established as the premier nude running event in Southern California. The local wild burros often visible from the course inspired the punning name of the race, because competitors run the race bare... burro. More than 250 runners completed the course in 2017. The Bare Burro has been featured in the calendar section of Los Angeles alternative newspaper LA Weekly, and the 2016 Bare Burro was featured in OC Weekly and was the subject of a two-page article in the British naturist magazine H&E. Running shoes are strongly recommended for runners on the gravel and dirt course, but nudity is not an "option" at the Bare Burro: It's a requirement.

"We're a nudist resort, and we expect runners to get with the program here. We have found that many dedicated runners are fine with it: 'You want us to run with no clothes on? Okay.' Then we don't see them again until the next year," Kilborn chuckled. "When it's cool in the early morning, everybody is dressed, even veteran nudists, but by race time it's usually warm enough. After a few minutes, everybody acclimates to being nude. You may forget to put your clothes back on until you're on the freeway going home."

Runners can register through the Olive Dell website at bit.ly/odbburro. Registration for runners is $35 in advance, $40 after April 1, and $45 the day of the race, if space is available. Registration for runners 17 and younger is $10. Participation is limited to 300 runners, who will all receive an informational packet and tote bag with

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 22 of 44 cool cup and can koozie. Registered runners may bring friends on race day to cheer them on; they will be required to pay the Olive Dell daily entrance fee. All runners and their friends are welcome to remain on the grounds for the awards ceremony and use Olive Dell's pool, hot tub and other facilities for the rest of the day.

At Olive Dell, unauthorized photography is strictly prohibited at all times. A special area near the pool will be dedicated to taking selfies and attendees are encouraged to post on social media using the hashtag #BareBurro2018. The race maintains a Twitter presence at @ODBareBurro. Information about the race, including suggestions on what first-time visitors should bring along, can be found on the Olive Dell website at http://olivedellranch.com.

"The race gets bigger every year, and with new runners and their supportive friends, it gets better every year, too," Kilborn said. "We look forward to seeing all of you here when we kick off spring with the Bare Burro 5K Trail Run."

Olive Dell Ranch is located at 26520 Keissel Road in Colton, California. Gates open at 8 am the day of the race and the Bare Burro 5K race starts promptly at 10:30 am.

About Olive Dell: Since its opening in 1952, Olive Dell Ranch has offered family- friendly nude recreation to three generations of Southern Californians and visitors from around the world. Owned by second-generation nudists Bobby and Becki Kilborn, Olive Dell has hosted nude Olympics-style track competitions and conventions of nudist organizations, as well as its own Rockin The Ranch music festival to celebrate the beginning of summer and Labor Day end-of-summer Wild West Days. Olive Dell is home to a group of permanent residents who live on- property as well as home club to naturists from around Southern California. Olive Dell is affiliated with AANR, the American Association for Nude Recreation. First-timers are always welcome, subject to capacity, and members of affiliated nudist organizations can take advantage of discounted gate fees. Report: Public Relations Committee Page 27 of 44 AANR AND SOCIAL NUDISM THROUGH THE DECADES

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 16, 2018) -- For 87 years, the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR.com) has been the leading authority in North America on protecting the freedoms and rights of those who participate in non-sexual, family-style nude recreation. Members of AANR recognize the wholesomeness of the human body and believe that life is enhanced by the naturalness of social nudity. From exercise to relaxation, a person’s physical, spiritual, and mental health is enriched through nude recreation. Since AANR’s inception, social mores and topical issues have seen many drastic swings of the pendulum as relates to nude recreation, following are a sampling through the decades. 1920s-1930s • On Labor Day of 1929 , acknowledged as the founder of American nudism, led a small group of individuals to a picnic in the buff in the Hudson Mountains near Peekskill, NY and organized nude recreation in America was born with his dues-paying club, called the “American League for Physical Culture” (ALPC). The first official nudist club opened soon after on June 21, 1930, near Spring Valley in Rockland County, New York. By 1931, ALPC welcomed over 200 new members and moved to an area near Dover, NJ. In October of 1931, Ilsley Boone, the ALPC’s Executive Secretary replaced Barthel as leader of the ALPC, in the newly renamed American Sunbathing Association (ASA). • In 1933 Boone's interest in nudism leads to publishing the first American nudist magazine, The Nudist, with Henry S. Huntington as its editor which later becomes Sunshine & Health, and is in publication until 1963. • 1936: Male bare-chestedness is made legal in the United States. • Urban skinny dipping is widely practiced during the depression years, as few have extra dollars to buy swimsuits. Organizations such as the YMCA and Boys Clubs mandated to reduce filter blockage from clothing fibers, which remained in place through the 1970s and ‘80s.

1940s-1950s • Nudist “colony” growth is booming pre-baby boomer generation. • The book: Why Nudism: What Contribution Can the American Nudist Movement Make to Happier Human Lives? is published by the American Sunbathing Association in 1949.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 28 of 44 • Late 1950s: Michigan Supreme Court rules that people have a right to practice nudism within private resorts. • 1958: United States Supreme Court rules naturist magazines acceptable under Comstock laws, which define and regulate social morals. • Nude beach activitism on both the Pacific Coast and Atlantic Coast (most notably Cape Cod) flourish from the late 1950s through to the 1970s.

1960-1970s

• 1964’s “A Shot in the Dark” features Inspector Clouseau visiting a nudist colony. • In 1967, the “Summer of Love” and the youth culture movement embraces the beauty of the human body at such venues as Haight Ashbury and then Woodstock in 1969. • ASA separates its member clubs and resorts from those cultivating “swingers” and maintains focus on non-sexual family-friendly nude recreation. • 1974 is the year of increased streaking around college campuses in the USA. • July 8, 1976 ushers in the first designated National Nude Beach Day during this national bicentennial year.

1980s-1990s • The ASA grows to nearly 50,000 members throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean in the 1980s. • 1980–81: The Naturist Society is formed in the USA. • Evolving from National Nude Beach Day, National Nude Weekend is declared by The Naturist Society. Soon after, ASA partners with TNS and several years later it is expanded to Nude Recreation Week for the first full week after the 4th of July. • 1992: Photographer Spencer Tunick starts documenting the live nude figure in public. • In September of1992 the first annual Nude & Breast Freedom Parade is held in Berkeley, California. • The term "nudist colony," never an acceptable term in American nudism, is targeted for replacement in the vernacular by the nudist population. ASA affiliates commence referring to their properties as "chartered clubs." • One more name change occurrs in 1994 when the ASA becomes the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) – to better reflect the activities of its membership .

2000-Today • AANR provides funding, legal support and guidance to members and clubs in need of assistance in maintaining their rights to practice nude family recreation in appropriate settings. • On June 12, 2004 the first is held. • Nakation® is service marked in 2008 and becomes part of the nudist lexicon to describe a nudist vacation. • AANR coordinates a skinny dipping event on July 11, 2009 at 3:00PM Eastern Nudist Time, throughout North America. The event is recorded by The Guinness Book of World Records as "largest number of people simultaneously skinny- dipping."

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 29 of 44 • Throughout the early 2000s, the uptight and not so silent far right minority infringe on nudists rights by attempting to close nude beaches in state and federal parks. • Social media introduces and increases the incidence of body shaming. In 2018 AANR counters with a campaign to promote body positivity and acceptance of nude recreation. Before the end of Q1, AANR has nearly 83,000 Twitter Impressions weekly and captures an average of 30 brand new AANR memberships weekly. • Nudist resorts from Spain, Greece and Thailand join AANR as affilliate -- “participating businesses” -- in 2018.

These and many more factoids can be found in The Nudist Idea by Cec Cinder, a copy of which resides in the AANR library, and can be purchased through Amazon.com

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 30 of 44 WHY NUDISTS WANT TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR EARTH DAY

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 19, 2018) – Earth Day 2018 has as its forum: End Plastic Pollution. And the American Association for Nude Recreation -- an organization long known for promoting the natural life -- is compelled to share with you a few interesting, conscious-raising, and little-known facts this Earth Day, April 22nd.

1. Polyester, a plastic, is found in most every wardrobe in t-shirts, dresses, jeans, suits, sweat wicking athletic wear, and even undergarments. Why not, like naturists, give a little help to Mother Earth by paring down your closet? The number of garments the world consumes is a growing ecological issue in energy necessary to produce; and once out of fashion, the inability of polyester fiber clothing to biodegrade, which puts an added strain on the environment.

2. Take your clothes off at home and feel more comfortable, free of restrictive garments.

In the sunbelt, by turning up the central air conditioning thermostat one degree, you can cut fuel consumption by as much as 10%.

4. Running one’s dishwasher produces approximately two pounds of CO2. Hand washing dishes is no better; that can use up to 15 gallons of heated water, which is almost three pounds of CO2 per dish washing. So, wait until the dishwasher is full to run it. AANR resorts have restaurants equipped with energy saver dishwashers, that when coupled with efficient use, reduces the washer’s carbon by 25%.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 31 of 44 5. Need to get away? Take a Nakation® vacation, a clothing optional getaway. Remember, luggage kills fuel economy, which is one reason why checking it on the airplane costs you. You won’t need more than a carry-on for a Nakation vacation. You should travel light on road trips too. Did you know an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle reduces your car’s fuel economy by 2%? Those taking a Nakation vacation are able to pack less and travel more. And AANR-affiliated lodging facilities are extremely affordable. With 200 clubs, campgrounds and resorts to choose from in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and internationally, there’s bound to be one right for, and near to, you.

Despite all of the damage caused to the environment by man, most of it is reversible. As conscientious custodians we can restore habitats and return species to them; clean rivers; renovate buildings; replenish the topsoil and replant forests. Many nudists are closely connected to and get eagerly involved in the preservation of our nation’s beaches, parks and other natural resources, and they are also committed to reducing their personal impact on the Earth’s resources. Report: Public Relations Committee Page 34 of 44 SUBJECT LINE: Naturist Mother Daughter Bonding Isn’t Just at Mother’s Day

Good morning x,

Stories abound about glam trips and epic adventures that forge a stronger mother daughter bond. But if you’re interested in featuring a little-covered topic in time for Mother’s Day, consider sharing the personal stories of mother daughter duos who have flourished from taking Nakation® vacations together.

I represent the American Association for Nude Recreation (www.AANR.com) and am pleased to share a sampling of personal insights into mother/daughter bonding and the joy and self-confidence that blossom from joint visits to clothing-optional and clothes-free clubs/resorts/campgrounds affiliated with AANR. Following are quotes from AANR members. Should you wish to interview these and other mother/daughter nudists for an article, we’ll gladly arrange…

From one mom's perspective: How the mother daughter bonding began…

“As a young mother, I nursed both my babies. The skin-to-skin contact is purported to be a major part of the benefits to both mother and child. But unless I was at home, I was required to either use the public restroom or completely cover the child and breast. What a relief to get to a nudist camp and know that no one really cared that I used my breasts just as nature intended.” -- Bev P.

From her daughter's perspective: Smooth transitioning from childhood to adult…

“I have always been grateful that my mother took me to various nudist venues. I grew up understanding human anatomy in all its ages and stages without having to read a book or sneak a peek. I am certain that knowing what was "next" for me personally, and not being ashamed of those natural body changes, made my journey from child to woman a much easier process.” Theresa P.

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 39 of 44 SHED YOUR THREADS AND ENJOY A NAKATION® VACATION DURING NUDE RECREATION WEEK THIS JULY And Participate in the Inaugural “International Skinny Dip Day”

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (May 8, 2018) – What do Lady Gaga, George Washington, Hugh Jackman, Heidi Klum and Ben Franklin have in common? They’ve each admitted to enjoying a good old-fashioned skinny dip. Movie stars, musicians and entertainers today are openly professing their comfort level getting naked while swimming, sunning, and relaxing in their birthday suits -- all activities the American Association for Nude Recreation (www.aanr.com) refers to as “Nakationing.”

So, this July, the American Association For Nude Recreation encourages free spirits young and old to join in the celebration of Nude Recreation Week (July 9-14, 2018) and the first ever International Skinny Dip Day, observed on July 14th. Many AANR affiliated clubs, resorts and campgrounds will be hosting “open houses” so that interested parties can experience the stress-relieving freedom of nude recreation with like-minded souls. Don’t want to take the plunge at an AANR facility? Why not take a skinny dip in your backyard pool? Don’t have a pool? Then wash the family pet in the nude, scour the shower in the nude, vacuum the house nude, read a book, garden, or enjoy some other activity in one’s own appropriately private setting; or better still, visit a sanctioned nude beach.

Nude Recreation Week gives first-timers a chance to shed stress by giving clothes-free recreation a try without the commitment of membership. This annual celebration is open for individuals, couples and families to visit one of 200 clothing-optional and clothes-free clubs affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation, to experience firsthand this growing trend in both travel and recreation. Additionally, on July 14th AANR’s “International Skinny-Dip Day” will be taking place at participating locations as

Report: Public Relations Committee Page 41 of 44 MAY IS BETTER SLEEP MONTH BEST HACK FOR A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (May 2, 2018) – The Better Sleep Council has designated the month of May as “Better Sleep Month,” to encourage people to establish better sleeping patterns for a more refreshing and healthier sleep. Tips include:

• Establishing a consistent sleep schedule; • Relaxing before bed time; • Creating an optimal sleeping environment based on room lighting and temperature too.

If you discover that you're too warm while under the covers, the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR.com) wants you to consider that your best sleepwear may be no sleepwear at all.

According to Medical Daily: “Optimal temperature for restorative sleep is between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. A study published in the journal Brain found when the sleeping environment has a temperature that fits this parameter, it helps the body’s core temperature to drop in preparation for sleep. If we’re too hot, this will prevent the body’s core temperature to reach the optimal parameters, which can lead to restlessness, and even insomnia. Sleeping naked will prevent the body from overheating, and will therefore lead to a better night’s sleep.”

Also, know that the term “beauty rest,” is not just a myth. Maintaining a room temperature that is no higher than 70 degrees while we sleep allows the anti-aging hormones to function properly. A sleep environment that is too hot will not allow the body to naturally cool itself and disrupts the release of these hormones. Sleeping in complete darkness stimulates the release of melatonin, which cools the body, and then the growth hormone is released. Hormones will work better at lower temperatures and will allow the body to regenerate resulting in better hair and skin.”

As AANR maintains, when the clothes are shed, so too are the stresses of every day life. And, there are added health benefits… It is widely accepted that sunlight counteracts the Winter Blues. (Studies indicate your body needs at least 20 minutes a day of sunshine over at least 75% of your body to help prevent a vitamin D deficiency – of which one notable side effect is depression.) Therefore, it follows that those who routinely combine the benefits of a daily -- or nightly -- nude break to rebalance oneself, with the need for sunlight on the skin, are on a steady course for healthy living.

For 86 years, AANR has been the leading authority in North America on protecting the freedoms and rights of those who participate in wholesome, family-style nude recreation. KISSIMMEE, Fla. (May 31, 2018) – Some of the most venerable personages and publications push out their “Hot Reads for Summer” lists this time of year. And so does the American Association for Nude Recreation. Theirs comprises a list of books celebrating skinny dipping and sunning unencumbered by clothes. They’re not risqué, simply celebratory of the joy of being one with nature as simply as the way we came into the world…before the plot thickens.

• Skinny Dip, by Carl Hiaasen • Skinny Dipping, by Connie Brockway • Gaviota: The Nude Beach Murders, Robert Joseph • The Nudists, Guy Bellamy • Hippie Hollow: Murder on a Nude Beach, Denniger Bolton • Nudist Camp, Orrie Hitt • As Nature Intended – A Pictorial History of The Nudists, Adam Clapham • Family Naturism in America, Ed Lange • ’s World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts

The American Association for Nude Recreation (www.aanr.com) has officially designated the second Saturday in July as International Skinny Dip Day. For 2018, International Skinny Dip Day will be observed on July 14th. On International Skinny Dip Day, bring your “hot read” and join with naturists by taking a dip au natural in your backyard pool, a secluded spot on a river or lake, at a sanctioned nude beach or at one of AANR’s 200 clubs and resorts throughout the U.S., Canada and internationally. Report: Public Relations Committee Page 43 of 44 Subject Line: It’s the Summer Solstice. Time to Nakation® Vacation.

Webster defines Summer Solstice as: the point in the sky occupied by the sun on or about June 22nd when summer begins in the northern hemisphere.

The American Association for Nude Recreation (www.aanr.com) defines it as the unofficial start of Nakation® vacation season.

What’s a Nakation vacation?

According to AANR: na–ka–tion /nāykāýshən/ n. & v.— v. to take a clothing optional vacation, esp. away from home for pleasure and recreation. — n. the part of your vacation that checks off a bucket list item.

Did you know a nakation vacation makes good fiscal sense? With airlines charging more and more for checked and carry on luggage, this type of pleasure trip eliminates the fees and potential hassle of lost luggage, and there’s no investment in a vacation wardrobe, everything you need fits in your “carry on personal item!” Most importantly, when the clothes are shed, so are the stresses of the everyday world.

This report will be my last as your Government Affairs Chair. It has been a rewarding and frustrating at times tenure but I feel the team has been as effective as possible in all of our efforts. I say frustrating but that is more for our inability to change a policy than anything we have done. We educate when possible but sometimes a city council has already decided what nude entails. For some reason simple nudity is a hard concept for some to grasp and they will not listen to the possible illegal action they are taking. We take these losses in stride and try to learn from them. AANR–NW spent many nights arguing with Spokane area governments about ‘nude baristas’ when the problem was more perception than actual nudity, for example.

Each member of the team continues to be dedicated to our efforts to keep bad laws off the books and educate government officers, volunteers, and employees on the wholesome nudism movement. Here are the highlights from the members.

AANR F-GAT - Chair John Hunter

John Hunter continues to be the rock that keeps us current on Federal as well as eastern state issues.

Report of Federal Government Affairs Analyst (F-GAT) for August AANR Board Meeting June 21, 2018 In January I reported that there had been no legislative or regulatory activity at the Federal level that could affect nude recreation on Federal lands or impact our ability to create and distribute publications or web pages depicting simple nudity. That remains the case. I get daily feeds on regulatory activity from the five Federal land managing agencies and check the Government Printing Office website www.regulations.gov on a monthly basis to double check on the status of any pertinent regulations. I also check twice a year to learn what new rules or regulations the agencies might be considering and have found nothing for at least two years now. None of the proposed regulations that we have learned about in the past 18 months have gone anywhere.

I continued to use the StateTrack bill monitoring service. Until AANR-East had a government affairs chair, I monitored reports for states in that region and alerted Tim Mullins and others of anything that might need attention. About ten or so bills needed to be examined. The AANR-East GAT chair may have a report on anything that needed to be tracked or acted upon. So far as I know, nothing objectionable made it into law.

In April I worked with StateTrack staff to prepare a two-page set of instructions of the steps to take in reviewing a bill, deciding whether to not to continue to follow it, and how to delete it if it is not relevant. I felt this guide was needed because some GAT members were not using the service as effectively as could be. Several GAT members tested my instructions and, once the kinks were worked out, a final draft was sent to all the members. I’ve received only positive feedback on the guide. The guide still needs some additional work in order to cover additional topics.

Most of the coastal recreation areas affected by the two 2017 hurricanes have reopened, though some offer only limited access or services. Virgin Islands National Park (VIIS) is barely back in service and some other NPS units have kept a few beaches closed because debris has not been cleared. So far as I know, none of the areas that have seen some degree of nude use in the past are closed except at VIIS. Because of the effects of the hurricanes and rising sea levels, some Atlantic coastal areas used by nudists are likely to be somewhat smaller or disappear altogether, particularly in Florida, during the next 25 years.

In June, I attended the Partners Outdoors 2018 meeting in Washington, DC, as I have done for several years. Partners Outdoors is the creation of the American Recreation Coalition (ARC). This year’s meetings were hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) which Report of Federal Government Affairs Analyst (F-GAT) for August AANR Board Meeting June 21, 2018 is essentially a reconstituted ARC. Information about organizations in attendance, including AANR, was provided in registration packets; we should be pleased that AANR was second on the alphabetical list as our presence might otherwise have been buried.

As expected, the Partners Outdoors program contained little of direct interest to AANR. However, I did learn about several organizations and businesses that might make good partners or technology resources for AANR and will be reporting on them separately to Erich Schuttauf. I have already suggested to Erich that he look into whether it might be worthwhile to have an exhibit booth at the September annual meeting of the National Association of State Parks Directors in Arizona. ORR videotaped most of the sessions and has posted them on YouTube. To view them, go to YouTube.com and enter the search string “Partners Outdoors 2018.” The first “hit” should have a “View All” option; clicking on that will bring up 17 videos of the individual presentations. As I have reported previously, Congress appropriated funds for and directed the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) to study the economic impact of outdoor recreation on the national economy. A preliminary report was issued in February showing that the outdoor recreation industry is a significant contributor to the U. S. Gross Domestic Product, with a gross output of about $673 billion or about 2% of GDP. A press release can be found at https://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/industry/orsa/orsanewsrelease.htm These findings square nicely with the economic impact report done by AANR- Florida. No one from BEA attended the meeting, so I was unable to ask if nude recreation entered into the agency’s analysis. For details about the changeover from ARC to ORR, see http://www.funoutdoors.com/node/view/3915 for a press release. Most, if not all, ARC members are members of ORR and some of the board members were retained as well. I have some thoughts on whether AANR should remain involved with ARC/ORR but will present them later for consideration by the new AANR Board. In the meantime, I plan to monitor what ORR does and try to learn if some other recreation oriented organization might be a better “fit” for AANR. More information about ORR is at https://recreationroundtable.org.

AANR-Florida – Chair Jonathan Duffield

I’ve included Jonathan report on the very successful deployment of a nude beach button on the visit Florida website as an example of Florida’s efforts this year.

Visit Florida is quasi-governmental, the official Florida tourism industry marketing corporation, and they didn't exactly make it easy for us. There were many hoops through which we had to jump.

We were already a Visit Florida Partner organization, but we needed a "lever" to get them to let us onto their e-magazine platform. That lever was our Economic Impact Study report, and it was so impressive that they could hardly deny us space.

There were many, MANY concerns over photos and copy, though, and a LOT of negotiated edits. While Ramon Maury took the lead through those negotiations, I was most concerned that our site would be watered-down or buried, hidden or lost altogether. Happily, none of those things happened.

Visit Florida provided the space, guidelines, took most of the photos, and wrote the articles. AANR-Florida provided editorial direction, background information, interview access, and links.

I'd like to point out that no clubs or resorts were excluded from the links just because they're not AANR affiliates. Our philosophy is that we exist to serve the interests of ALL nudists and naturists -- not just AANR Members.

Yes, that means that non-AANR Member entities get a free ride thanks to our efforts, but "a rising tide floats ALL boats." And, in the long run, our Members will reap the rewards and enjoy the benefits of this increased exposure.

Also, this will be a living, breathing, constantly evolving site. In the near future, we hope to add the AANR-Florida logo to give our role in its creation more visibility. (To bolster our credibility and relevance, it is crucially important for all AANR regions to take PUBLIC credit for their achievements.) Continual updating to keep our content current will be an on-going process.

AANR-Midwest - Chair Don Phillips

No active items since the last report.

AANR-Northwest – Chair Shirley Gauthier

AANR-NW enjoyed a quiet legislative session.

AANR-NW Board of Directors recently addressed a non-discrimination policy. As Government Affairs Team (GAT) Chair this makes my work with legislators much more credible. It was always my fear that after soliciting a legislator, politician, lobbyist or anyone in fact that they might travel through our website. In doing so they could possible see clubs or resorts where they would be excluded or treated differently.

The AANR-NW Board of Directors unanimously voted to address a non- discrimination policy at the Spring Board Meeting. So that we would be in accordance with the AANR policy we simply defined how we interrupted it.

AANR policy states (Section I Article IV A) “AANR welcomes all people willing to conform to its principles and standards, regardless of age, gender, marital status, religious beliefs, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.

To AANR-NW this includes welcoming all single, partnered and married people of all gender identities, ethnicities, sexual identities, ages, sizes, religions and physical abilities.

The Willamettans Family Nudist Resort recently removed the words couple and generally recognized couple from their ruling documents. Only single memberships are sold and every member maintains equal membership rights. This progressive move allows everyone applying for membership to go through the same orientation, pay the same fees and equally enjoy all privileges of membership. The Willamettans have always required the following for membership 1) appropriate behavior and 2) pay required fees. It has worked well and is now addressed in the ruling documents.

Reaffirming the non-discrimination policy is a choice for all AANR-NW clubs/resorts. All AANR-NW clubs/resorts were sent a letter to sign and mail back to our webmaster. As soon as the webmaster receives letters of reaffirmation the club/resort name and contact information is added to the non-discrimination page. A club/resort can choose not to be listed.

It is easy to measure the members and visitors who come through our locked and gated resorts. We have no way to measure those that do not apply or visit due to being treated differently or excluded.

AANR-East – Chair Bob Roche

With the addition of Bob Roche to the team we have a second pair of eyes looking at AANR-East issues, freeing John Hunter to concentrate on the Federal issues. Bob almost immediately alerted us to a bill that Erich reports on in his report contained here.

AANR-Southwest – Chair Gary Spangler

Not much happening in the SW Region. Louisiana had some bills concerning recording people secretly and using it as "revenge". Nothing in Arkansas. Texas legislators aren't in session this year. Oklahoma spent most of it's time in several special sessions, then in the following regular session trying to pass a budget which was hastened by a two week long teachers strike. No real threats to nudism this year that we're aware of.

AANR-West – Chair Gary Mussell, AANR-West President

AANR-West Government Affairs Update March – June 2018 By Gary Mussell, Regional GAT Chair One of the primary reasons to belong to AANR (besides having fun) is to support our work that protects our right to be nude through legislation and the courts and, where possible, to expand social nude recreation opportunities. Here is a summary of recent activity:

March 2018 Many legislatures are back in session, but only a few bills have piqued our interest to date:

In Hawaii, SB 691 wants to define nude sunbathing as lewd behavior in the state. It will rescind the 2000 Hawaii Supreme Court decision of State v. Kalama that says law enforcement agencies cannot arrest or issue a citation to a person who is nude unless the person is acting in a lewd manner. The new proposal will include simple nude sunbathing in the offense. Last year we worked with NAC and discussed jointly hire a lobbyist, if necessary. Fortunately, the bill never had a hearing as the committee chair where it was assigned was opposed. We will watch the bill carefully and act immediately should it gain any traction in the current session. [Update June 2018: The bill died in committee without a hearing.]

Also, in Hawaii, HB 1792 would forbid unmanned aerial hobby aircraft (i.e. “drones”) from taking photos of people from the air without their permission. This matches GAT’s position exactly.

HB 2711 states: “The legislature finds that public access to beaches is of paramount important and a public right.” The purpose of the bill is to create a task force to study ways to reopen public access to beaches in areas currently gated or otherwise cut off from the public, and to create more and better public parking areas. What makes this an interesting bill is it does not exclude nude access to beaches. If it doesn’t ban nudists perhaps it can be used to increase our ability to increase nude recreation in the state, assuming SB 691 does not pass. The downside is greater public access also means our isolated nude beaches may get opened up to wider public use.

HB 2134 makes it a Class B felony to “intentionally or knowingly install or use in any private place, without consent of a minor person any device for observing, recording, amplifying, or broadcasting a minor in a stage of undress or sexual activity” and to “intentionally distribute such images of an identifiable image of a minor” (under age 18). While the intent of this bill is a reaction to revenge porn or teenage sexting, it is written so broadly that images of families being nude at a beach or in their backyard (or bathtub – see Arizona, above) could also be covered.

In Utah, HB 196 allows pubic breastfeeding whether or not the woman’s breast is covered. But they are not as behind as Idaho. In Idaho, a bill was introduced last month finally to allow mothers to breastfeed in public. Idaho is the last state with no legal protection for breastfeeding mothers. The last attempt was in 2003, but the bill died in committee.

In Arizona, a couple saw its conviction reversed by the Court of Appeal that saw their kids taken away after WalMart refused to process some nude photos taken by the parents of their 3 girls (ages 5, 4, and 1½) in the bath. Instead, WalMart called Social Services, who took their kids away. The case has taken ten years. The couple is now suing the state.

A member of the Canyon States nudist club received a ticket for nudity in the Tonto National Forest. The regulations state nudity is allowed in the area only in undeveloped areas, but it does not specify where exactly such areas are. AANR legal counsel Erich Schuttauf got involved, as did NAC’s Bob Morton, but with only limited success. The regulations were up for review and were re-publishing in February. The Superintendent decided to carry forward the same rules as before.

April 2018 In Colorado, HB 18-1143 is a repeal of many of the nudity laws in the state which local courts have ruled unconstitutional. For example, a state court in Ft. Collins ruled that women have the same rights to top freedom as men. We are quietly supporting this because we don’t want to stir up any opposition. Odds of passage are good.

At Bates Beach, Santa Barbara County, California, the local police chief has retired. He agreed not to ticket for nudity there if there were no complaints. We met with the new chief and city manager a few weeks later and received assurances there would be no change in policy.

May 2018 Pirates Cove Nude Beach near San Luis Obispo, California The Whales Cave Conservancy (WCC) nude beach advocacy group attended a public workshop on April 25 with San Luis Obispo County Parks "to protect the public access to the beach, cave, trails, coastal views, and night star viewing." Meaning they wanted to reduce the number of parking spaces available to nudists and also narrow the legal hours for parking there.

WCC spoke against these changes and again asked that the Parks Department not restrict access to the legal clothing-optional status of Pirates Cove beach. They also urged more frequent trash pickups than the current twice a month schedule (a tactic to make the nude beach unappealing to visitors). WCC stress the area be kept a "natural and undeveloped area rather than as a traditional county park." About 20 people attended the meeting and no one spoke against the nude beach.

No decisions were reached at the meeting. Parks said their recommendations will be made public “in a few months.” We will stay on top of this.

Danita Rodriguez, California State Parks Area Superintendent On May 3, AANR-West President Gary Mussell met with Danita Rodriguez, the new Central Coast Superintendent for the California State Park system.

Her predecessor, Richard Rozelle, decided to close Gaviota State Beach in Santa Barbara County to nude use after the state’s Cahill Policy was rescinded in 2009. Rozelle recently retired so we thought this a good time to introduce ourselves and discuss nude use of the local state parks. While the meeting was cordial, she said she could not refuse to give tickets at Gaviota, or simply issue warnings, because the state parks director has not rescinded the directive to prohibit nudity in the state park system.

Gary asked her for an update list of citations issued at all the state parks for 2016-2017, as Rozelle used to do, and she said she would do that. The number of tickets will tell us how vigorously they are enforcing the nudity ban on their beaches. We agreed to meet periodically.

June 2018 Saline Valley Near Death Valley We thank those AANR-West members who have sent letters of support to the National Park Service about the updated management plan for Saline Valley Warm Springs, adjacent to Death Valley National Park in California.

This has been a popular spot for nudists to enjoy the local hot springs for several decades. We want to keep it that way, with no change in policy or enforcement. If you agree, send a brief letter to: Death Valley National Park P.O. Box 579, Death Valley, CA 92328 Comments may be submitted by email to: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/SalineValleyWarmSprings.

AANR and the Naturist Society are working together to have input into the planning process. Comments are due by July 2. More information can be found at: https://www.nps.gov/deva/learn/news/saline-valley-comments.htm

Auburn Dam, Sacramento River The California State Parks Department and the US Bureau of Reclamation are collaborating on a new General Plan/Resource Management Plan for Auburn State Recreation Area, located on the north fork of the American River. Just below the Auburn Dam, is a very popular destination for nudists in this part of California. A public workshop was held on December 7, 2017 in Auburn. AANR-West and GAT were well represented by Tim Mullins and other members of the nearby Northern Exposure club. Tim reported that nobody objected to the nude beach area as the focus of concern seemed to be access to the area by pet dogs (currently banned) and a demand to build trails in the park. Another public hearing is scheduled for June 26 and Tim and his team will be attending. This is after the deadline for submission of this report. We will report in our next report on what happened.

In Summary (as of June 22, 2018) Election years are usually when we see a flood of anti-nudity bills introduced by local politicians wanting to use our way of life as a campaign issue. This year, however, it has been extremely rare to see any such bills in the eight western states of our region. One such bill in Hawaii never got a hearing. Neither has there been many anti-sexting bills or proposals to restrict the use of hobby drones over private property or public parks or beaches (our position is nobody should have their image photographed or videotaped while nude without personal approval). It seems the politicians are too preoccupied with guns, walls and kids in detention camps to worry about the people who want to hang out together without clothes. Our Government Affairs Team (GAT) asks all local nudists to stand up to our opponents where ever and whenever we can. If the world thinks there are only a few of us, and that we don’t really care about our rights, we will run the risk of a small band of vocal opponents getting their way. We are looking into hosting a Government Affairs workshop at the AANR- West convention, so our members can gain a better understanding of what we do to promote or oppose various bills at the federal, state, and local levels.

AANR Office – Kissimmee

From: Erich Schuttauf, Interim Director Date: June 25, 2018 Re: 2018 AANR Convention GA Report

I look forward to joining you for the 2018 AANR Convention at DeAnza Springs Resort in California. Here is a summary of developments during this year.

National Conference of State Legislatures – Los Angeles As this report is being prepared we are making final arrangements to attend and staff AANR’s booth at the National Conference of State Legislatures. This year the conference (which moves from city to city each year) is in Los Angeles, California and expected to draw nearly 2000 lawmakers, additional legislative staff (about 800) and other vendors, union representatives, and businesses, associations such as AANR, the National Rifle Association, American Medical Association, American Cancer Association, Facebook, and nearly 300 others. Notably the Conference also draws lawmakers and staff from every Canadian province, and other locations in Europe and beyond. This is AANR’s 25th consecutive year attending NCSL and it marks our 24th year of bringing a different pin every year. This year’s design celebrates Hollywood using a movie biz clapboard motif – a theme relevant to both the AANR Convention and Los Angeles as NCSL’s host city. While at NCSL we will again speak with Arkansas lawmakers about repealing the long-on-the-books legislation which prohibits mere advocacy for nudism. More currently, we will talk with lawmakers about pieces of legislation introduced in Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Rhode Island, and Vermont as discussed below.

State and Provincial Level Developments Your Government Affairs Team (GAT) members convene monthly on a telephone call to discuss issues at both the state and local level within their regions. Among bills that I was asked to actively research, track, and provide guidance are the following: Colorado – The state is currently considering several bills to revisit laws regulating , which were struck down as unconstitutional some years ago by Colorado’s supreme court. (One of the cases, involving the Tattered Cover bookstore, was championed in part by former ASA counsel Bob Page through his work with Colorado’s 1st Amendment law guild.) Significantly, the state’s free speech and free press protections are arguably more expansive than federal ones in certain circumstances meaning that overzealous obscenity restrictions are suspect. Kentucky – Bob Roche and John Hunter alerted us to HB 71, which restricts the electronic communications that may be disseminated via electronic means, with additional restrictions and penalties for materials deemed harmful to minors. Of initial concern, the bill referenced nudity and exhibition of genitals in the restricted communications. With additional research into some statutes referenced in the bill, we determined that the materials require something significantly more than mere nudity to trigger a violation: i.e. the displays must be obscene after applying contemporary community standards and evaluating the political and artistic value of the material (a standard that has long been applied to materials following the US Supreme Court decision in Miller v. California.) Rhode Island – The state considered a measure that would require internet filtering and blocking and for providers of certain material to be licensed and pay a special tax/licensing fee. Because the fee could have applied to AANR under an expansive reading due to nudity in content, we began tracking S2584 by state senators Cicone and Gallo. We also brainstormed a short list of allies whom we have cultivated through NCSL to have at the ready. The bill was eventually withdrawn. Tennessee – HB 1140, a very troubling bill as written, caused significant alarm to us because it prohibited any and all electronic communications to, or among, minors if said communications had any nudity with a very expansive of the term. The bill was amended to restrict photography only under circumstances where an individual would be embarrassed by the nudity, did not give consent, and had a reasonable expectation of privacy when the photo was taken. A very puzzling legislative history with the amendment added, substitute legislation, and more caused additional concern. However, the version ultimately adopted and passed by the Senate contained the language protecting privacy rather than prohibiting mere nudity. Vermont – Rep. Bissonette reintroduced a bill (H73) restricting public nudity at the request of a local constituent but the bill has not advanced. The bill is, perhaps, remarkable only because the state has such a history of tolerance for nudity at the ole swimming hole dating to a famous legal memorandum once prepared by now-Senator Patrick Leahy. We have had an opportunity to discuss the bill with the representative and with co-sponsors at NCSL, to voice concerns.

AANR Assistance to Members and Clubs Canada – After the promoter of an event with an indoor nude family swim night in Calgary received online backlash, the city initially refused to allow the event in its pool. The promoter took additional steps to address any security concerns, the pool was rented, and the event held subsequently after significant efforts by the promoter and WCANR volunteers including Bob Campbell and Bob Dixon. AANR launched several media initiatives in response to raise awareness of online “counter petitions” to the event ban. AANR and I also reviewed the leasing terms, insurance requirements, and provided legal guidance. Also from Canada, an AANR member visiting Florida was cited for nudity on a beach which was remote, but not officially designated for nudity either. I provided guidance to the attorney whom she had retained and arrangements are underway so that the member is not inconvenienced by a need to travel for a court appearance, face any jail time, or incur a criminal record. New York – A concerned AANR member contacted the office and me after the local school system contacted her about her daughter. The family of this girl had brought her to the local club after assuring her that she could remain with or leave the club as she wished. The daughter opted to stay and had a wonderful experience… so much so that she reported the positive experience to her teacher the following Monday at school. AANR and I provided guidance, as well as a packet of informational materials about the many jurisdictions and case law specifically recognizing AANR resorts as wholesome family-oriented locations to use in educating officials. We are pleased to report that the school took no further action. Wisconsin – AANR continues to provide guidance to an AANR member family who received inquiries from authorities when an ex-spouse of the mother learned that the family enjoys simple nudity in the home with an occasional visit by mom and dad to clubs. We are working to help educate the GAL guardian ad litem assigned to the situation.

Updates:

 Much of the MI Committee’s work has been “paused” while the MMSS Committee does their job. Please see Karen’s report below.  I have made the decision not to continue my work as chair of this committee after the 2018 AANR convention. The tragic and unexpected loss of my good friend Bob Campbell had a powerful effect on me and I have been consistently re-evaluating how I choose to spend each and every day. I am no longer willing to give my free time away quite so readily. I regret that this decision may have an impact on AANR in the short-term, but I am confident that other qualified, energetic folks will pick up where I have left off if that is what is meant to happen. Thank you all for the opportunity. With gratitude, T

Membership Management System Selection (MMSS) committee report Current Status We started our search with 60 Membership Management Solutions to evaluate. In doing this evaluation, we should really call this software Association Management Software or AMS since that is the term that is used in the industry. Using the criteria that is attached to this document, we have reduced the search down to less than products to hone into. The primary requirements that eliminated candidate software packages were  Inability to interface with a well known, off the shelf, accounting package like Quickbooks or Great Plains.  Inability to handle our hierarchical membership structure, ie, members belong to clubs which belong to AANR in which Certifying Officers would be able to add, delete and renew their members without significant customization.  No auto renew functionality.  Not responding to my request for more information.

1/12/2018 Page1 of 5 / Membership Issues ad hoc Committee REPORT

The remaining software packages are:  ACGI Software https://www.acgisoftware.com/  Fonteva https://fonteva.com/  iMsi http://advsol.com  MemershipWorks https://membershipworks.com/  MemberSuite https://www.membersuite.com/  NeonCRM https://www.neoncrm.com  Protech Associates which provides a solution on Microsoft Dynamics CRM www.protechassociates.com  Your Membership https://www.yourmembership.com/

Near Term Plans The committee will do an internet search to find and evaluate reviews as are available. Demos will also be setup for the committee and the staff. During these demos, we will ask each company to show us

 References  Company size  How long they have been in business  Detailed solutions  Certifying Officer Pages  Member Pages  Member Only Pages  Connection to accounting package  Connection to merchant services package  Detailed costs  Implementation plans

It is possible that these will have been completed by the time of the convention.since that is still over a month from now.

In a wonderful world, a clear winner would present itself and we would be able to present that information to you, with our reasoning, at that time. However, if not, a follow on report will present our best options and recommendations to you as soon as possible.

Ongoing Plans Once we have chosen the AMS, we will pick an standard accounting package and a consulting firm to support that accounting package. We will formulate a plan for implementation. This plan and its implementation is critical. While it feels like a lot of work has been done so far, it is NOTHING compared to what is to be done to make implementation happen successfully.

6/30/2017 Page 2 of 5 / Membership Issues ad hoc Committee REPORT

What we need from the board We are a new board. From the AMS selection perspective, I would like us to reaffirm that we want to continue this work. I need everyone’s total commitment. There is too much to be done for us not to be working together to complete it.

From a Member Initiative perspective, we have discussed several ideas, like moving away from dual memberships to letting club members renew. There are significant people process questions that need to be solved to allow this new functionality to happen. Let us start the discussion on these process changes.

6/30/2017 Page 3 of 5 / Membership Issues ad hoc Committee REPORT

AANR Membership Management Requirements The new membership management system for the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) has multiple requirements.  We require proven data security protecting against loss of data and breach of privacy.  There must be the ability to keep backup of our intellectual property on site.  It must support our membership structure. Our association is comprised of its members. Each member either belongs to a club or is an associate member. If a member belongs to a club, that member belongs to the geographical region in which the club is located. If a member is an associate member, that member belongs to geographical region in which the member lives.

There are various levels of membership, with differing dues’ amounts. For example, there is a basic membership, a premier membership, a student membership, a life membership. The cost of these various AANR membership options are standard across the organization. However, the regional dues differ by region and a member’s total dues will therefore vary based upon which region they belong to.

 It must be possible to purchase multi year membership. The cost of the membership should be accrued during the interval when it is in effect.  Only club owner/managers can have the capability to add members to their club.  It should be possible to purchase memberships of less of than one year so that clubs can prorate memberships. This will allow some clubs to get all of their members to renew at the same time.  Associate members can purchase a membership as they wish.  There are several ways that a member can be renewed.  There must be a mechanism that will allow a club manager to process the renewals for their own club members.  There must be a mechanism that will allow a member to process their own renewal.  There must be a mechanism to select one or both of the above renewal mechanisms on a per club basis.  It must be possible to handle auto-renewal of membership.  There must be a way to mark a member as no longer being able to renew as a member of a given club.  There must be a way to mark a member as no longer being able to renew as a member of AANR.  There must be a way to send periodic automated notifications to both the clubs and the regions of members added or renewed.  There must include an ad hoc query capability, preferably with a friendly user interface to define a query, which can then be saved to build up a library of saved queries.  There must be a way for a club to query its members and their status, including an accurate count of members for a given day, such as end of year.  There must be a way for the region to query its members and their status, including an accurate count of members for a given day, such as end of year.  There must be robust, complete accounting capabilities or a way to integrate with a standard off the-shelf accounting package.  There must be a way to handle international fees, charges and monetary amounts.

6/30/2017 Page 4 of 5 / Membership Issues ad hoc Committee REPORT

 We prefer configuration over customization, but should be able to customize if required.  We prefer being able to integrate with our current website, rather than needing to replace it with a new website.  It must be possible to create our own webpages using an API or adequate configuration options.  There should be an ability to configure customer facing pages to have our look and feel.

Assist in the financial plan for presentation by the Finance committee chairperson Status: The planning committee submitted proposal #2 for the 2018 ballot. Proposal #2 would changing the number of Trustees from 14 to 7 was placed on 2018 ballot.

Details: Over the past year the board has discussed a variety of options to change the structure of the AANR board. The Planning Committee was asked to lead the discussion at the general membership meeting to consider reducing the number of board members. The committee presented a list of pro's and con's for all the options discussed. It was felt a smaller board would improve communication between board members and facilitate better participation, allowing for quality decision making, improving the boards effectiveness. At present the AANR board consists of 14 trustees, President, Vice President and the Secretary/Treasurer. The planning committee discussed the options proposed and crafted a motion to be placed on the 2018 ballot. The make-up of the board would consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer and one Trustee from each region. Proposition #2 would only change the number of trustees from 14 to 7. The discussion for this proposal has continued through the use of the AANR Form http://www.aanr.com/nudist-forum/ . The committee is waiting to see the outcome of the ballot issue. The planning committee would like to discuss surveying a sample of our members and a sample of our past members to gain an understanding of how to better meet the needs of our membership.

As introduced in February, WINR has been working on an initiative to support members and guests at all nudist venues to feel safe in speaking out against sexual harassment and assault. I published an article about the topic in the March Bulletin with a follow up in the June issue. I have received much feedback on the articles and the initiative from both women and men who appreciate AANR standing with them on this issue. Several representatives from AANR clubs have communicated an interest in furthering the conversation at their clubs and we have exchanged information and ideas. An important point that has become very clear in these exchanges is that leadership and owners must ensure that members and guests are aware of how to report and address problems. It is not enough to have policies in place – we must educate everyone. In April I was invited to address this topic with the Lake Como Board of Directors. In June, we had a great discussion at the AANR-FL annual meeting with club owners, beach ambassadors, and members in attendance. Clearly the interest is high in regard to the topic and AANR and WINR leaders are stepping up to address potential problems and prevent further ones. Expect much more discussion on this.
