PRESIDENT’S REPORT A MEASURE OF SUCCESS By Beverly B. Price Four years ago when I took the oath of office for AANR President, I intended to hit a home run every time I stepped up to the plate – and I intended to step up to the plate often. Little did I know then that the measure of success in baseball is significantly less than my idealistic vision. Ty Cobb, outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, was the epitome of success in Major League Baseball, earning more than 40 baseball records, some of which stand today. And even his exceptional ERA (Earned Run Average) was a mere .367, about the equivalent of having a 1 in 3 success rate. Does this mean that my analogy of hitting home runs was way off base (no pun intended) and the real measure of success was something greater than 1 in 3? I began to look at the other measures of success that the general public (as well as the AANR public) take to heart. J.K. Rowling, the successful author of the Harry Potter novels, has stated, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case you fail by default.” I have never been accused of being cautious, so I have not failed by default. George Clooney, American actor, credits his aunt Rosemary with the advice, “Just do it, and be willing to fail, and at least you gave it a shot.” Is that a careless attitude? Not for me. Michelle Kwan’s first coach insisted that she learn to fall before she learned to ice skate. She knew that Michelle was bound to fall many times and that she needed to learn how to handle it. I have dealt with failure even as I have attempted to succeed at everything I’ve done for AANR. Michael Jordan has missed more than 9,000 shots in his basketball career, has lost nearly 300 games. He states, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Although failure is not really acceptable for me, I have to reassess my goals every time that I fail and do what I can to turn it into a success. Jack Lemmon, Academy Award winner, once said, “What stops you is the fear of failure. You will never achieve a deeper understanding of your work, or learn the tough lessons if you are liked or comfortable all the time.” For what it is worth, in the past four years I have been both disliked and uncomfortable. Neither has stopped me from learning what I needed to learn. And some in AANR have considered everything I’ve done a failure. In order to make certain that I have given all my constituents their due, I can unequivocally state that if that is the case (and I don’t believe it is) that I meet Winston Churchill’s definition of success: “Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” I am just as enthusiastic about AANR today as I was four years ago, and I will continue to carry that enthusiasm into the future. I still believe the best is yet to come and we can do marvelous things if we will simply work together to succeed. I pledge that I will give it my best effort. • Archives of American Art Journal, Vol. 49 Nos. 1-2: the Anniversary Issue
From the director This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of theArchives of American Art Journal. What started as a modest pamphlet for announcing new acquisitions and other Archives’ activities soon blossomed into one of the signature publications for the dissemination of new research in the field of American art history. During its history, the Archives has published the work of most of the leading thinkers in the field. The list of contributors is far too long to include, but choose a name and most likely their bibliography will include an essay for the Journal. To celebrate this occasion, we mined the Journal’s archive and reprinted some of the finest and most representative work to have appeared in these pages in the past five decades. Additionally, we invited several leading scholars to prepare short testimonies to the value of the Journal and to the crucial role that the Archives has played in advancing not only their own work, but its larger mission to foster a wider appreciation and deeper understanding of American art and artists. I’m particularly grateful to Neil Harris, Patricia Hills, Gail Levin, Lucy Lippard, and H. Barbara Weinberg for their thoughtful tributes to the Journal. Additionally, I’d like to thank David McCarthy, Gerald Monroe, H. Barbara Weinberg, and Judith Zilczer for their essays. And I would like to make a very special acknowledgement to Garnett McCoy, who served as the Journal’s editor for thirty years. As our current editor Darcy Tell points out, the Journal’s vigor and intellectual rigor owe much to Garnett’s stewardship and keen Endpapers inspired by the Artists' Union logo.

  • BBC Learning English Weekender World Naked Bike Ride
BBC Learning English Weekender World Naked Bike Ride Jackie: Hello, I'm Jackie Dalton and you're listening to Weekender with bbclearningenglish.com. Do you enjoy cycling, taking your bike out and getting some exercise or fresh air? What about cycling with absolutely no clothes on? Well, I've never tried it myself, but hundreds of people all over the world have, and they think it's lots of fun. This weekend, the World Naked Bike Ride takes place. People in cities from Vancouver to London will be getting out their bicycles and taking off their clothes. The question is: why? Conrad Schmidt is the man who's linking up cyclist groups from around the World for this event. He spoke to me over the telephone from Vancouver and he's going to give us some answers. What reasons does he give for the naked bike ride? Conrad It's about getting a message out there that cycling is good for people and it's good for the planet and that if we're going to be sustainable, we've got to think about other things besides car culture. And just making a happier, healthier planet. Jackie: Well, Conrad said cycling is good for people and good for the planet. He uses the word sustainable – a word we often hear in connection with the environment. It means to do things without causing damage to the environment. A nice phrase he also used was 'getting the message out there', which means making sure people know, or you could also say 'making people more aware' – Weekender © BBC Learning English Page 1 of 3 bbclearningenglish.com 'aware' – a word that Conrad will use next when talking about climate change.
