SCNA board member Art Melworm is recovering after a bad fall and head injury put him into the hospital for several days. Art, who is also our local Naturist Action Committee representative, says he is doing better but he is still unable to drive. As a result, he says he won’t be able to attend the Member’s Meeting in July but he looks forward to working with everyone next year on the Community Outreach and Education Committee and also working on Santa Barbara Nude Beach project. Last month we announced that SCNA would award up to $250 to sponsor a member’s child to attend the annual AANR Youth Summer Camp. Well, I guess all you parents want to keep your little darlings underfoot this summer because nobody applied! So our Treasurer thanks you for not having to write a check, and we hope somebody applies next year. This year’s AANR West Youth Camp and Leadership Academy will be held July 9- 15 at Olive Dell Ranch in Colton. The summer camp program was started ten years ago for nudist children ages 11-18, and it attracts up to several dozen kids in that age bracket from all over the Western United States. REMO Recreational Music Center, 7308 Coldwater Canyon in North Hollywood. Warm-ups start at 6:30pm, and the program begins at 7:00pm concluding at 8:00pm. There is NO FEE to attend this event! This is a clothed event. Celebrating Nude Recreation Week: SUNDAY JULY 9 NOON AT SAN ONOFRE BEACH This is our annual trip down the coast, to the closest beach where nudity is permitted. Everyone should bring enough food and beverage for themselves, plus some extra for visitors, etc. WEAR YOUR SCNA HAT, if you have one, so we can find each other more easily. Overnight hotel reservations the night before in town are suggested because the beach parking lot fills up pretty early (before 10am) during the summer. We’ll try to meet up by 1pm.     From the director This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of theArchives of American Art Journal. What started as a modest pamphlet for announcing new acquisitions and other Archives’ activities soon blossomed into one of the signature publications for the dissemination of new research in the field of American art history. During its history, the Archives has published the work of most of the leading thinkers in the field. The list of contributors is far too long to include, but choose a name and most likely their bibliography will include an essay for the Journal. To celebrate this occasion, we mined the Journal’s archive and reprinted some of the finest and most representative work to have appeared in these pages in the past five decades. Additionally, we invited several leading scholars to prepare short testimonies to the value of the Journal and to the crucial role that the Archives has played in advancing not only their own work, but its larger mission to foster a wider appreciation and deeper understanding of American art and artists. I’m particularly grateful to Neil Harris, Patricia Hills, Gail Levin, Lucy Lippard, and H. Barbara Weinberg for their thoughtful tributes to the Journal. Price Kurt Barthel (1884–1969) Father of the Modern United States Nudist Movement At first, nudism in North America followed the post- World War I European pattern of organizing small social clubs that met in people’s homes or out of the way lakes and streams where outsiders rarely encountered them. In 1929 the first real nudist outing to be held on American soil was organized by a group of German-Americans who were familiar with European naturism. After group discussions in New York City led by Kurt Barthel, they rented a piece of remote, unimproved property over Labor Day weekend, and enjoyed a pleasant weekend outdoors. The next spring, Barthel decided to form a regular club, which he named The American League for Physical Culture. A year later, the ALPC opened a permanent site near Spring Valley in Rockland County, New York, which they named Sky Farm. Over 200 new members joined that first year. Police raids soon followed as word of Sky Farm spread. When the case came to trial at the end of 1931, to everyone’s surprise, the judge acquitted the entire group. He ruled that not only were they doing all they could to maintain their privacy they were not guilty of any lewd behavior. This unexpected victory gave the nudist movement a tremendous boost. Publicity alone attracted many new members.

German Naturism in the Third Reich Matthew Jefferies (University of Manchester) British and American travellers during the 1920s were frequently moved to comment on the extent to which public nudity was becoming a feature of everyday life in Germany. In his memoirs the poet Stephen Spender recalled his first visit to the country in 1929: The sun—symbol of the great wealth of nature within the poverty of man—was a primary social force in this Germany. Thousands of people went to the open-air swimming baths or lay down on the shores of the rivers and lakes, almost nude, and sometimes quite nude, and the boys who had turned the deepest mahogany walked amongst those people with paler skins like kings among their courtiers.1 There were also many less celebrated observers who were so enthused by the naked lifestyle that they wrote books arguing for its adoption in their own countries: Dr. Maurice Parmalee, for instance, a Constantinople-born American sociologist who wrote Nudity in Modern Life (1927) after spending the years 1920–23 and 1926 in Germany;2 or the Reverend C.E. Norwood, author of Nudism in England (1933), who visited Germany in 1928;3 or Harold C. Booth, who came back from 1920s Berlin to found the short-lived Gymnosophical Society.4 Indeed, the clothes-free lifestyle was so closely associated with Germans that the first nudist colony in Britain—a piece of Hertfordshire woodland purchased by Charles and Dorothy Macaskie in 1929— was given the name ‘Spielplatz’,5 even though it had no teutonic connections.

  • AANR-West Hosts Annual Summer Festival at Glen Eden
    June 2021 Vol 5 No 6 between clubs, and the calendar for future nude 5K running Western Region News events. It was a diverse collection of interests! From our table, we handed out iron-on patches, temp tattoos, and commemorative pins to celebrate AANR’s 90th Anniversary. We also handed out some free writing pens, emery boards, SPF lip balm, and wrist bands that turn blue if one is in the sun too long. Those people who had not heard of the AANR-West Passport program said they were eager to visit many of the clubs in the region as soon as the pandemic restrictions were lifted. We also handed out copies of our monthly Western Sun newsletter. Last, we also sold several of our GPS T-Shirts. In the afternoon, GE opened a beer and wine bar near our booth and that helped attract more visitors our way. They also had Gary Mussell, Judy T, and Larry Gould share the AANR-West information booth Broadway Joe & Anita provide background music in the pool at Glen Eden. area. AANR-West Hosts Annual Games and the Raffle In the late morning, we organized a couple of competitive Summer Festival at Glen Eden games on the lawn above the pool. The most popular was the By Gary Mussell “Frisbee toss for Accuracy” when contestants had to fling a Frisbee across the lawn to try to land it inside a hula hoop.     AANR, an Abbreviated History Organized nudism is a creation of the last century. The movement began in Germany, around the turn of the 20 th century, with the emergence of the youth movement known as Wandervögel ("migratory birds"). Back - to - nature groups of young men and women wandered through German forests and meadows, singing, playing musical instruments, and casually shedding their clothin g whenever they found refreshing streams or lakes in which to bathe and swim. A second German influence was the Naturheilbewegung (Natural Healing Movement). A number of German sanatoriums featured, as part of their programs, nude sun and air bathing. A German sociologist, Neinrich Pudor, published The Cult of the Nude in Dresden which extolled the virtues of nudism. Some consider Pudor to be the “father of nudism.” Free Body Culture, as it was called in Germany, started in the first years of the century and the first known nudist park, known as “Freilichtpark (Free Light Park) near Hamburg, Germany, was established over 100 years ago in 1903 by Paul Zimmerman. Most early European nudist organizations had a heavy emphasis on physical conditioning and abstinence. Their members practiced vegetarianism, shunned alcohol and tobacco and had rigid codes against any type of physical contact in public. Around 1905, the first British nudist organization, The English Gymnosophist Society was formed. In post - war Europe in 1919 and 1920, modern nudism began to be practiced, starting in Germany, then spreading to France, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, South America and England. The first nudist magazine Gymnos was published in 1921 in Germany. Many immigrants fr om Germany came to the United States following the First World War.

Thus, some people consider female nude painting as immoral and pornographic. This may be due to their religious background, especially if they are Christians, Moslems, Traditional believers or other faiths. The study employed qualitative method of research with purposive sampling technique and simple random sampling with interview and questionnaire to collect the necessary data. The study revealed that nudity in painting or figure painting was introduced by the colonial educators who came to teach art at Achimota College in the 1960s.
